So my last post was shortly after TFA so I'm reactivating my account Today I saw the premiere of TLJ in Luxembourg(Europe) and I'd just want to share my thoughts about the movie. I went to a 10AM screening with two friends, one is a Star Wars geek and the other is a regular fan I'd say.

Right after the movie the three of us agreed that the movie was awesome, breathtaking but at the same time 'some heavy stuff for the brain', for lack of words.
I somewhat liked the movie overall but there were still some parts that I didn't like at all and judge unnecessary or plain 'bad writing'.

    Starting with the negative:
    - WHY THE F*CK did they killed off Supreme Leader Snoke? He was just about to develop in character, show his strong force abilities but is then killed by Ren! I was really disappointed in that moment and this is the biggest negative point for me. I'd love to have seen his true identity, origins and plans in IX.
    - the reveal of Rey's parents was disappointing as well and I can't believe it really. I expected her to say that she and Ben are family but again I got disappointed.
    - General Holdo: why the f*ck is she killed? Seriously, she could have taken over Leia's place as General in IX but once again she the writers had a stupid plan of letting her die an heroic death. With all respect to the late Carrie Fisher, Leia should have been the General staying on the ship and crashing it into the Star Destroyer, not the brand new character. I can only shake my head at these decisions. In the writers' defense they couldn't foresee Carrie Fisher's death. But it would have been more logical to kill off Leia in VIII and let Luke be the only OT cast in IX.
    - Luke is killed off: again this was a huge bummer as I expected him to live through and shine as Rey's Jedi Master in IX. Honestly what did the story writers take to go on a killing spree like this? In addition, we don't know how far Rey's training has gone under Luke as we have only seen two (?) lessons of her training.

    The Positive:
After these negative points there were some positive points as well:
    - Ben's turn reveal: when the cast members said VIII is going to be dark I didn't expect it to be this dark. Luke trying to kill his nephew in his sleep and the latter fighting him was really unexpected but it gave depths to both Luke and Ben/Kylo and their relationship. We now know why Kylo hates Luke so much and honestly I felt a little disgusted about Luke at that moment.
    - Rey's conflict of Light/dark: Rey's conflicted character fulfilled all my expectations about her. She's on the edge of the dark side and shows that in the scenes where she has an argument with Luke. She is quite selfish, I found, which is a trait of the Sith and it was only fitting that she swung Kylo's cross guard light saber.
    - Force abilities: Both Kylo Ren and for the first time Snoke reveal their force abilities. Snoke's force lightning absolutely surprised me and his force chokes/stuns of Hux and Rey are violent and demonstrate his power in the force, even if only a glimpse of it, as HE WAS KILLED OFF! (seriously I can't get over his death). Kylo Ren was also fantastic with his force abilities, he didn't use them as much but also his lightsaber abilities were awesome.
    - the similarities to ROTJ and TESB: a lot of people might find this bad but I actually liked the similarities to V and VI. e.g when Rey surrenders to Kylo is no doubt reminding of the elevator scene in ROTJ when Luke surrenders to Vader. This was just brilliant IMO. Both Rey and Luke surrender to the foe with the same mindset of turning their enemy to the light but are almost turned themselves to the dark side. If only Snoke survived...

So on a different note my SW geek friend and I both agreed that there was something special missing in TLJ. Neither of us could point it out but I think it's the simplicity of previous SW movies. The OT and even PT were simple in the story. In TLJ every major character has his own subplot and that makes the movie a bit harder to digest that previous movies IMO.

As conclusion I would rate the movie, after the first viewing, a 6/10. I have two other viewings planned and these might change my rating slightly.
As you can see I'm really angry that Rian Johnson decided to kill Snoke, this is an unforgivable act and my interest in a RJ trilogy sunk by a huge amount.

May the Force be with all of you

Just got home from seeing the movie and I really liked it. It was very different for sure and very complex -- (Rian Johnson was basically like, "what Star Wars formula?") -- but liked it all.

I was also wrong about everything I've speculated/predicted in regards to TLJ (except "Luke will probably die" but that was almost a given), and I was especially wrong about Rey Kenobi (which I have championed a bit here); kudos to RJ for keeping it fresh.

Lastly, I see the fan backlash to this film is strong with the Dark Side... screw that! :p

PS: Why is it so hard to animate Yoda? What's that about?

Yes, you should also read the new edition of the force user manual where it clearly indicates everyone carrying a lightsaber should have the safety on in case another force user tries to ignite it and turn it against him. Snoke clearly was not up to date on those guidelines.
He should have also read a another very good read titled "How overconfidence and trusting your sith disciple can swiftly end your drreams of galactic domination" by Palpatine's clone.

Just came home from second screening and it grew a lot the second time. For me it is easily the best MOVIE in the saga to this date (while not necessarily the most entertaining) and it should grow on people like empire did. Lots of options for ep 9.

I knew something was wrong because he had his old lightsaber from the ROTJ and it was blue. Plus, his look. But this moment was absolutely precious:

    giphy.gif

    :D

I just saw it and I am still processing. There is so, so much. I decided to ditch my job and reserve the additional tickets, because I agree with some reviewers that you MUST see it more than once. You just don't have the time to process anything, because the film moooves. My litmus test for the general audience is my brother who isn't a big SW fan, who came dead tired from work that I thought he would fall asleep in the theater (would not be the first time). He couldn't get his eyes off the screen and he told me afterwards that he felt the danger for the characters.

My first reaction is that this is an amazing film which broke my heart nonetheless and yet left me hopeful. My assessment is that this movie will age like ESB - it will be divisive immediately after, but it will be remembered as one of the best.

The sad thing about Carrie's death is that TLJ became a true handover to the next generation - each of our new characters became what they should be - Finn, Poe, Rey and Kylo. The old guard is gone, though I hope to see Luke because Mark was amazing. Just imagine how powerful he was when he finally opened up himself to the Force again, that he projected himself across the space and that Leia felt his hand as well as Han's dice. Perhaps he will fulfill Obi-Wan's words and become more powerful than we can possibly imagine.

Just quick, jumbled thoughts. I'll probably have much more to say on Saturday when I see it again.

I think I was the only one that really liked Yoda. He looks much more with puppet from TESB and ROTJ. I hate what they did with him in the prequels.

I've read several non spoiler reviews that said the same about how it moves. I was wondering does it move at the pace of TFA? Faster? Slower? Because that was my only grip about TFA was the pacing was a bit fast and by that I mean as soon as you meet a character we are jumping to a scene or something happens like Lor San Tekka dieing.

Now I can understand why they are making a Han Solo movie. Probably they will try to make amends with the fans they just annoyed with TLJ.

It seems the force has been no good to the Skywalkers. The only one left is a tyrant?

I liked him too. But, I don't care about the animation, I liked the personality.

It's not like that, but the movie is very complex - you get one thing and immediately another, often in the same scene with the same characters, you just have no time to process. I'd say the pace is perfect, I never felt the movie's length and we get enough time with the characters. It's just that a lot is happening to all of them.

"I guess I was wrong. There was no danger at all."

    Captain Typho in AOTC

"I cannot be betrayed, I cannot be beaten!"

    Snoke in TLJ

You just knew that he would be betrayed. Bad writing, i think?

I want to do a review but I'm so disappointed. So terribly dissatisfied with this film. It just..I feel like I have been betrayed. Betrayed by trailers and TV spots, by Disney's confidence in the film, by fans' confidence in Rian, by the Force itself.

I had even lowered my expectations.

Yet as the film went on and on, nothing touched me. It was all insane action and melodrama with little room for character development or an organic narrative. The main concepts - rebel fleet on the run trying to survive just a little longer / side trek to Canto Bight / Reylo / Rey Vs Luke were all sound enough, enticing even. But the execution is severely flawed.

Alas I can only compare it with a film I dislike but for some fleeting moments where I got the SW feeling: Revenge of the Sith. Only this one edges it out by not having Hayden in it.

Even the soundtrack was flawed like in the PT with inappropriate music to certain scenes. But I had hoped for "Luke and Leia" (from ROTJ) and was pleased to hear it. But why did we get Palpatine's theme?

I know I'm hard to please but dammit I enjoyed TFA a lot and TLJ just..
    ...made me cringe a lot.

Good luck with that, the sole idea of making a Han Solo movie without Harrison Ford is just ridiculous, Star Wars has such a vast universe of characters from decades of comics, novels and video games and they resort to recasting one of the most iconic characters ever.

I hope a few more viewings will make it more OK..but for now I feel like it's 1999 all over again.
I basically liked the early Ach-Tho scenes, Poe Dameron and the Porgs. Chewie was ok.
