SPECULATION The Black X-Wing

Maybe B-88 is the messenger which is why Rey took off in a hurry;

 

Look what I just noticed in the new behind the scenes images they released this weekend.

Most (I think) have seen this shot of all the R2 (R5?) domes the droid builders made for the different x-wings.


But look at this image. I think That R2 unit goes with the Black X-Wing. It's got the same 'special forces' color scheme

 

Those heads in the second photo might be the R6 astromechs that were mentioned alongside the R5s (in the first photo). I don't know how the old EU classified those heads, but is there the inference in TFA that R5s and R6s are more advanced droids than R2D2 and now the droids of choice for X-wings?

 

To sell more toys!

Actually, I think it is for visually differentiating Poe's X-wing from the rest of them on screen. I'm sure that he's also an advanced fighter pilot, and it's a way to show that he's the big cheese as far as X-wing pilots go.

 

This also backs up the idea the BB-8 is Poe's droid, and would seem to indicate the BB-8 is with Poe again before the end of the movie.

 

Well, for me, a black space ship makes more sense as black is the right type of camo for space...

Aside from making space battle's visually easier to view for the audiance, I never understood why just about every space opera insisted in grey or white space crafts.

 

Can't give you any good explanations on that one mate , but i can give you 10 really crappy ones


1.Cause he is really stylish and wants the ship to match his hair.

2.Cause Poe's favourite colour is black and he listens to Goth and other depressing music. His birth name was Timmy but he renamed himself Poe after Edgar Allen Poe which sounded way cooler and would easier get him laid. The ship is called "the raven".

3.Cause one day when he came to the base his mates had punked him and painted the ship black. They pick on him a lot , he is like Gomer Pyle in Full Metal Jacket. One time they filled his helmet with Bantha poodoo.

4.Cause he is still mourning the last ship he crashed.

5.Cause he think radars won't detect him during night time.

6.Cause after the movie is released people can put up cheesy montage videos to AC DC's "Back in black" on youtube.

7.Cause according to a guy on reddit Poe used to be a rebel/sith lord and ....ehm..?

8.Cause it was a birthday present from Kylo Ren. Things have been reeeeally awkward between him an Leia since that weird day...

9. Cause Poe has a discount at a custom ship shop.His bass speakers are really badass too and the ship is a bit lower then others when on ground.

10. Cause Poe is colour blind and a bit stupid. He calls his ship blood dragon and he thinks he is a member of Red squadron. The ship is black and he is actually a member of Blue squadron. This had been a running joke now within the resistance for the last 7 years.

 

I dig the thought but the new lego set shows BB-8 with Poe in the black X-wing . . . . does this mean there are more than one black X-wing? Perhaps a special squadron.

I believe that the x wing is black for the audience to recognize the hero from the plebs. They may invent some backstory of course....

 

It's black because

"He's the best frickin' pilot in the galaxy, that's who [Poe Dameron] is..."

 

Its black because of the same reason Vader's tie had distinct wings.

 

The cynic in me notes that it has Hallowe'een colors right as the fall toy season is going to hit.

The speculator in me says its because this X-Wing has stealth technology, because that's a plot device I'm sure both the toy company and the writers could benefit from.

The realist in me notes that space ships are different colors for different reasons in the film, this one probably just designates the X-Wing as an Resistance craft rather than a New Republic craft. Black seems to be a prominent color for Yavin IV resistance. The fact it then creates a reason to create two prominent X-Wing toys also creates a beautiful merchandise dividend.

Luke and Wedge never had different colored xwings so the audience could distinguish them from the others. Why is it all the sudden necessary now with Poe?

No, I think this thing must have a special ability.
