The Book of Boba Fett's debut numbers are in, and the first episode of the new live-action Star Wars series had an impressive five-day premiere, besting the launch of fellow Disney Plus series Hawkeye. Boba Fett stars in the first official spin-off to The Mandalorian, where the character made his official return to live-action.

According to Deadline, Samba TV has indicated that devices connected to their services tracked that a total of 1.7 million viewers tuned in to see Boba Fett rise from the depths of the sarlacc's stomach and begin his criminal empire on Tatooine from Wednesday to Sunday. That number just edged out the 1.5 million viewers that watched the Marvel superhero Hawkeye have a chaotic Christmas in New York City with his protégé. What's particularly impressive about this statistic is that Hawkeye's premiere came with two episodes, with a considerably longer runtime.

Unfortunately, since Samba TV wasn't measuring streaming numbers at this time, we can't determine how this opening stacks against fellow Star Wars live-action series The Mandalorian, but there is one other show that Samba TV tracked that could serve as a frame of comparison. Marvel's Loki has scored the highest debut for a Disney Plus series with 2.5 million viewers - a move that was so successful that Disney Plus opted to shift all their premieres for original series to Wednesday instead of Friday. It remains to be seen if Star Wars can pull in those kinds of numbers, but this is certainly a promising start for the original live-action Mandalorian, who has six more episodes to air.

The first episode of The Book of Boba Fett is now streaming on Disney Plus, with the second debuting Wednesday. Lucasfilm's slate of other Disney Plus Star Wars content for 2022 includes the highly anticipated series Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as the Rogue One prequel series Andor, a new season of the animated series The Bad Batch, and quite possibly the third season of The Mandalorian.

That number, 1.7 million views, sounds low. I thought Disney plus had over 100 million subscribers…?
