Okay I made some Lasagne today. It's been a while, about a year, so I was running around the store today like an idiot trying to remember what to get.

Sauce: marinara, Italian sausage, green pepper, onion, 2 diced tomatoes 2 crushed garlic cloves, olive oil, fresh basil, dried herbs.

Cheese mixture: ricotta, parmesan, romano, cheap a$$ mozzarella :(, chopped fresh basil instead of parsley because parsley is meh.

    Noodle: Barilla

Assembed it sauce noodle cheese. Sprinkled olive oil on top. Stuck it in the oven for couple of hours. Boom. Done deal.
    Next time getting buffalo mozz.

Guys, if you have the chance to get hold of it, try De Cecco pasta! Of course it’s not as good as self-made (but who has the time after work with a hungry kid?!). Barilla and Buittoni are above average, but De Cecco is worth the extra invest!

It’s mostly impervious against over-cooking (keeping the al dente state), has a great texture were sauce can cling to, and is of great overall quality.

Just realized, when looking up a recipe for Spaghetti with Meatballs on YouTube, that Jamie has the same preference when buying pasta in a super market.

I like him already. :) Pasta & Pizza are the best! (no Italian relatives either... as far as I know...)
Looks delicious! (since a few years we can get Barilla pasta in supermarkets here too. :))

Awesome Pumpkin! When you turn it into SKB, pictures please! ;)

Unfortunately in those few stores De Cecco is sold, it's really expensive... So for me Barilla is the best buy. Excellent quality for a decent price. ;)

I’m totally with you, especially because Barilla or Buittoni pasta will be in a bargain offer at least once every 4 weeks in some supermarket around, so I can fill up the storage. With the regular pricing, Barilla to De Cecco its 1.59 EUR to 1.95 EUR – a saving of 40 Cent per piece. But best deal prices for Barilla can drop to 0.66 EUR, which means a saving of more than 1 EUR per package. But at some occasions it has to be De Cecco (also when they get into a bargain offer and the other are not – then there’s nearly no price difference anymore).

Some weeks ago I did a tasting of canned Tomatoes of different Brands and price ranges because I found myself at a shelf presenting 6 or so different brands – from no-name to all kinds of Italian special ones. So I asked myself, how come that the expensive ones are still sold.

    tomatoCAn.jpg

The result was an eye-opener for me. The no name version from the local supermarket chain costs about 0.39 EUR per can, but you can get a brand product from Italy for 1.25 EUR. And after tasting both parallel, I wondered why I brought the cheaper one my whole life. Bland, tasteless and boring why the more expensive one really made a difference with great tomato flavor, fruitiness and a full aroma. Never again the other ones, especially if you have a dish with just some basic ingredients where every component has to hold on its own – like a sauce marinara which stands and falls with the quality of the tomatoes.

Coming up this weekend: TexMex food, a wish my son expresses quite regularly (although I keep the part with the Chilis very low on his end), so it will be Burritos and Taccos with the ever present aromas of cumin and fresh coriander (cilantro), and of course garlic. And no cheap tomatoes for the salsa roja. ;)
I hope to get hold today of ripe avocados for the guacamole though.

Exactly the way I do it. Every so often when the really expensive brand are in a bargain, I buy them.
But usually its Barilla for me, especially the spaghetti 'Bucatini no.9'! It's thick, so a larger surface, so lot's of sauce can cling to it. But it's hollow, so it still cooks pretty quickly and it makes them more juicy (and more sauce can run inside! :p).

    Indeed, this happens a lot!

I had it once with cookingcream. There was a 'premium'-brand and the supermarkets home-brand. But the home-brand was slightly more expensive... though they had the same content-size. Puzzled I picked up one of both and read the ingredients-list. Turned out, the 'premium-brand' was based on water and powdered milk, but the homebrand was based on actual cream! Suffice to say I didn't buy the so-called 'premium-brand'...

People, when you go out to buy ingredients (even when you're on a budget) some thing you shouldn't save too much on... try different brands, check the ingredients-list on the back and stay with the cheapest one you can live with! :D
The best products to buy are usually somewhere in the middle of the pricerange.

Happy cooking, Buon Appetito and May the Force be with you... Always! ;)

I never felt more proud with my country untill i had to work/live abroad. Now i just like to brag with it on forums a lot.
We just reached 100000000 owernight stays this year...hit tourist destination on the rise with a steady 10% rate increase every year...
(Imo too many tourists but they mostly come in july/august so june/srptember one can find loads of secluded beaches)
