What if Obi Wan had a secret lovechild (with a woman from Coruscant) during The Phantom Menace era, and that child eventually became the mother or father of Rey?

Her upper class-accent may be explained by her family being from either Coruscant or Naboo (two places Kenobi must have visited a lot) or from his home planet Stewjon.

"This is one of the first things I wrote in the very first script. He comes from the planet Stewjon."
    George Lucas on Obi Wan
We know how the team for TFA loved to go right back to original concepts.. Obi Wan was obviously always supposed to be very significant.

If Luke really was her father.. then the prominence of the Obi Wan voice (and not Luke's) in the vision doesn't really make that much sense. They could have even thrown Anakin in there but they didn't.

Perhaps the "family" theme Kathleen Kennedy is talking about, isn't just about the Skywalkers.. but it extends to the Kenobis. Maybe we'll be seeing Skywalker and Kenobi offspring battling it out (or working together) on and off for next few movies.

Anyway, it's a theory.. right now i'm thinking about it and can see an opportunity for another spinoff cartoon set in pre-the episode i era.. about the early adventures of Obi Wan and Qui Gon, maybe showing Obi Wan's home planet.. LOST-style flashbacks to his childhood, Rey's grandmother and so on.. I dunno. What do you think?

I like the idea of Rey being a Kenobi. I'm probably in the minority but I would prefer this over her being a Skywalker. However if she is a Kenobi or a Skywalker (including being a Solo). The story is more complicated. Developing a believable well done back story is difficult because of what we already know about these characters and are preconceived notions of these characters. If she is a random, you can make up a strong believable backstory about her parents much easier because they could be anyone. However, that being said, I'm confident that Lucasfilm will come up with a good story whether she is Kenobi, Skywalker/Solo, or random. If she does have a well known lineage I'm all for her being a Kenobi.

I really don't think this will happen. But for the sake of the thread I will cooperate.

I wouldn't have a problem with Rey being a Kenobi, except for the fact that it ruins the character of Obi-Wan Kenobi. I don't think he would betray the jedi order and possess a child ever and if he did in my opinion it really hurts his character.

Just because you have a child doesn't mean you betray the order...if he did, maybe he had no idea.

That's one of the reasons I think making her a Kenobi or having Luke as her father trickier than just making her random. I think there are two ways around hurting his character. The first would be that he developed a relationship with someone shortly after taking Luke to Tatooine. The Jedi order is dead and we know that through the Clone Waes series he is capable of forming that type of attachment. I think that would be reasonable and acceptable. The other thing that can be done is give Obi Wan an brother who was obvious not a Jedi and procreated. The results of that being one of Rey's parents. This is not as a direct link to Obi Wan but makes Rey a Kenobi none the less. She would still carry the Kenbi name forward. A little more complicated for sure.

So for sake of discussion, it is possible. There are just a bunch of moving parts that make it more difficult. I think the same holds true for Luke.

In an essence he took an oath. Jedi are not supposed to have children due to compassion. In the Clone Wars, we see that Obi-Wan did likely have relations at some point with Satine Kryze. But he had to resist himself which it would appear he did successfully.

This is the most likely scenario. However, I believe that after witnessing what Anakin went through, he wouldn't go down this route. I also think he would not purposefully have a kid as a back-up if Luke and Leia failed. He trusted Yoda on this one.

    Respectfully, that's lame and confusing.

Obiwan's ghost talks to her when she grabs Luke/Anakin's lightsaber, "Rey you've taken your first steps...." so part of me thinks it's her granddaughter.

Obi-Wan and Yoda are both in the vision. Does that mean Yoda could be her father? Those two are force ghosts. Not that surprising they can communicate to her.

This trilogy has to make sense watched by itself. Obi-Wan isn't going to be her grandfather. It doesn't make sense and requires way too much explanation.

literally, she is an FS and they are seemingly communicating through the saber and not through her.

I'm gonna have to say pointing out a few parallels between the ice fight and the fire fight seems a little weak for evidence for me. As for Obi-Wan's voice in Rey's vision, that's better proof, but I'm not inclined to count it up to proof of the theory being correct just yet. Not to say you're wrong, just this isn't the evidence that would point me in your direction.

Would you still consider her a Kenobi if her mother was Obi-Wan's daughter and took her husband's name? I ask because I kinda like the idea that Obi-Wan either had a daughter or a granddaughter (depending on when he and Sabine were romantically involved) that later became involved with Luke, thus making Rey both a Skywalker and a Kenobi.
I also ask because that would mirror some of the...complaints with Kylo Ren. Some say - and admittedly I have argued this side* - that he's not a Skywalker because his last name is Solo, and if Rey is revealed to be a Kenobi through a female line, people might also say the same about her.

Personally, over the past few weeks I've been leaning towards this theory; I like the symmetry and patterns it creates between the Skywalker family and the Kenobi family and it doesn't have to clash with Luke being her dad. So who knows? Maybe you're right!

*I personally argued that Kylo isn't a Skywalker since Leia doesn't see herself as one; she always saw herself as an Organa. But if Kylo Ren sees himself as a Skywalker and has the bloodline to prove it...

I agree. I'm just throwing that out there as a way around Obi Wan not going against the order. I'm not a fan of that idea

Obi Wan was a jedi until his death and by this he applied the jedi code. I'm amazed how fans don't give a damn about that jedi code as long as there is some daddys and kids every where in the galaxy.

What this could make the story going forward ?

I think Obi Wan going against the Jedi Code in his younger years would make sense for his character, we've already seen a few instances where his judgment wasn't at it's best.

His angry outburst against Maul hinted that he had more to learn as a Jedi. He was a little arrogant to train Anakin himself and not urge Mace Windu, Ki-Adi Mundi to do so instead.. then even more arrogant for holding Anakin back and allowing Palpy to offer him more power and influence. I would say Obi Wan is partially responsible for Vader, so him going against the Jedi Code at some point wouldn't really affect how I percieve him.

Obi Wan is a far more flawed character than most people realise.

I disagree. The whole idea of the jedi arent beeing allowed to love was not very good imo. It was just a plot tool to make the Anakin-Padme romance a ,,forbidden fruit". Anakin broke the oath without a blink of an eye and he even found a loophole in the code to justify it. During the thosand generations I really doubt he was the first one to do so. Just imagine how many oathbreaks would've occurred just because of this rule. The jedi were travelling the galaxy. They didnt live their entire lives in a monastery like christian monks or shaolin monks. They werent even a homogenic society, like those. There were members of both genders representing themselves in the temple. I think when the young jedi hit puberty, the whole place turned into something like a college party.

Plus, the jedi order was no more when Obi-wan left it. He would betray nothing. Imo this would add something interessting to his character.

So instead of Luke going against the Jedi ways and abandoning his family, we shift that on to Obi-Wan's doorstep?

Imagine trying to explain this crack pot theory to someone who only watched and enjoyed TFA? It's confusing, it's retcon, and it doesn't add anything to the story. People seem to forget that this trilogy has to stand on its own.
