"You refer to the prophecy of the one who will bring balance to the Force"-Mace Windu

It's been a running question in the minds of Starwars fans for years now, whether or not Anakin really was the chosen one. Yoda says, "misread, the prophecy may have been." But what did it really mean to bring "balance" to the Force? When, and who, made this prophecy? Some ancient Jedi, or pre-Jedi Force user, no one knows. But what gets me, is why would this person even make this prophecy in the first place. Was the Force out of "balance" when that person made this prediction? If not, it probably didn't make much sense to the rest of the Jedi.

What would it take for this "prophecy of the one" to be fulfilled? To destroy the Sith? I'm not too sure. The prophecy was mentioned in the Phantom Menace rather early, and Qui-Gon had his suspicions about "the boy" before they even realized the Sith were still around. Up until this point in time, the Sith were thought to be gone. In the Council chambers, when Qui-Gon said that Darth Maul was a Sith Lord, Ki-Adi-Mundi says "Impossible! The Sith have been extinct for a millinium." So in my mind, the prophecy was not about the Sith, but something deeper.

What does it mean to be "out of balance?" Balance usually refers to more than one thing being equal in relation to one another, whether it be strength, value, importance, etc. So in order for one to bring balance to the Force, the Force must be out of balance in the first place. Now, the only parts of the Force that we know of, are the Dark side and the Light side. Are these two sides out of balance? In multiple ways, I believe so. Strength, I would almost say is tipped toward the Darkside. At one point in time, Mace Windu said "I think it is time we informed the Senate that our ability to use the Force has diminished." It seems to me the Sith don't really have this problem. But though the ability of the Jedi to use the Force has lessened, when it comes to sheer numbers, they have the Sith beat hands down. The rule of two, however loosely it was followed, was greatly outnumbered by countless amount of Jedi spread throughout the galaxy. But in the end, this did nothing to help them. If you examine the value, or importance that each side had on the living Force, both sides run pretty close, though in differing ways. The Light side had more influence day to day, situation by situation happenings. With the Jedi, Protectors and Guardians of Peace and Justice throughout the Galaxy, they were always trying to follow the will of the Force, whether in the Jedi Temple or on some distant planet, they were a force of goodness, (from their point of view). But behind the scenes, the Sith, and there for the Dark side, had just as much influence. In the senate, in backdoor dealings and underground operations, they ran things from the shadows, unnoticed but just as influential.

One thing is for sure, the Force was NOT in balance. So when Yoda said "Misread, the prophecy may have been," he may have been right, but not in the thought of Anakin being the chosen one or not, but in the fact him saving the Jedi. Maybe in order to bring about this balance, a total reset was needed. Even though it did not quite go in the favor of the Jedi, balance was ultimately achieved through his actions.

I welcome anyones input, especially differing viewpoints, as that's the only way to truly understand a subject, even if it is a fictional one. :p Maybe in the next movies we'll learn more, but until then.....

Well George Lucas had complete control over the creative direction of the Star Wars Prequels - and invented both the prophecy (and likely the Sith) specifically for the Prequels - and he has stated that Anakin Skywalker was the chosen one mentioned in the prophecy, and that when Darth Vader killed the Emperor, that brought balance to the Force. The fact that that doesn't make sense, and that discussions like this happen in the first place is because the Prequels made no sense to begin with.

You're right, it didn't make much sense. But it is cannon, and future stories will have to stay true to it. That's why I did this, to try to make sense out of what makes no sense at all, , if that makes any sense. lol

I know from other threads that my point of view is the minority point of view, but since you specifically asked for differing viewpoints, here it goes.

Yes, Anakin was the Chosen One. He did bring balance to the Force.

The Jedi were so convinced that the Light Side was the right side that they misinterpreted the prophecy. It was never the existance of the Sith that pulled the Force out of balance. It was the fact that the Jedi and Sith both embraced a "kill on sight, no questions asked" policy. Both factions existed in a permanent state of war with one another, and cooperation was impossible.

Really, the only difference between them is that one side shuns emotion and the other side embraces it? That's it? The movies are presented from the point of view of the Jedi and like-minded individuals, so of course the Jedi seem like the good guys. But in the opera scene we begin to see the other point of view. Later we see that the Jedi just as afraid of losing their power as the Sith are. We hear Mace Windu plot to take control of the Senate and see him try to assassinate the head of the government, so blinded by the idea that the Jedi are right that he doesn't see his own actions are no different than those of the Sith.

So blinded that he thought bringing balance to the Force meant one side destroying the other.

Anakin pushed the reset button. He killed all the Sith and all the Jedi. What's left now is Anakin's children, Luke and Leah. I don't know that they'll do in the Sequel Trilogy, but I doubt they'll rebuild the same Jedi Order that we saw in the Prequels. Luke embraced his darker passions to defeat Vader, but when Vader was beaten, Luke shut his emotions off. Yoda was wrong - Luke started down the path to the Dark Side but didn't let it control his destiny.

If Luke rebuilds anything, it should be along the lines of good vs. evil, not passion vs. no emotion. Passion isn't the enemy of the good, although it was the enemy of the Jedi. I expect to see Force users in the ST to be a lot less dogmatic than the Jedi.

An excellent post, and I feel one of the better views on this subject by far.
