Poster doesn't mean start of the marketing. The marketing actually already started.
First we got the teaser in April. In May Vanity will cover a lot of TROS stuff. We also have the Empire magazine.
In July we'll get the BTS reel. October official trailer and poster. November/December international trailers and TV spots. It worked fine for TFA, TLJ and R1. Solo failed because they hadn't time to do this exact marketing.

That's actually the best episode 9 poster I've seen.

 

I don't know how they can choose such awful official posters with so many creative minds out there.

 

It's so bizzare how studios resort to same schlock crap for posters. ESPECIALLY Disney right now with Marvel and Star Wars.

Just for shits and giggles:

regardless of quality of the film, these movies had effective posters. Most are highly simplistic focusing on bold contrasting colors to pop and catch your eye. The lines are clean and clear. Each one tells you a little bit about the story and the tone of the film.

Spoiler: Good recent posters

On the converse, you get some less than good posters that often hit one good thing, but lack any sort of depth to them. They look thrown together to use the IP to just get you to go "yeah sure" they probably took 5 minutes in creative to slap it together and get it done as quickly and cheaply as possible.

Spoiler: bad recent posters

For the sake of this thread, let's compare the two Star Wars posters.
TLJ has essentially 2 main colors. Black and Red. They contrast harshly. Then you have the burst of blue shining through the the middle fading into red. The lines are clean. It's easy to see. Very little extra. Hyper simplistic style. It tells you the story of TLJ. Rey stuck between Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren. The fading of the lightsaber from blue to red signifies her being pulled away from the light towards Kylo.

TROS poster does the colors mostly right. It uses Blue and Red effectively in terms of the lightsabers and the lightning. However where we get into trouble is with Palpatine in the background (foreshadowing!). He is a transparent blue. So he obscures the galaxy behind him but not fully so specks of white shine through but then his eyes are there and it's clear now they used a toy model for it so it looks off for a movie poster. Why is Palpatine blue? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense when you also have Rey as blue unless it's a hint to her lineage. That could work but in the poster they clearly use blue for good and red for bad. So it's sort of a mixing of things. It's a muddled mess. Simplify it. Clean it up and this general idea can work well.

And for fun:

The Void is two colors. Black and White. It's called "The Void" and the poster communicates everything you'd need to know about a movie called the void with one poster.

Suicide Squad is a pastel and photoshop nightmare. The pastel color palate is a nice refresher for the genre and posters in general. However when you throw the photoshop heads over this style of "punk" art if you will, it becomes a muddled mess. It clashes and doesn't sit well on the eyes. Why not clean it up and add the characters drawn in this style rather than random gunk and photoshopped heads?

I will even admit to liking bad posters at times just because I like the property. (I own several bad ones because Star Wars/Marvel)

 

Does anyone's here knows if this poster was an official release? Is my first time seeing it and it looks amazing. Also it looks official but I never seen before. Where can I confirm this information? Thanks.

I might’ve mentioned this in another thread, but I can’t be the only person here confused as to why Leia only appears on one poster for this film even though it’s supposed to be her film. I realize that with Carrie passing away, they couldn’t do a whole lot with using her in the marketing/promotional materials for the film, but I don’t understand how they weren’t able to include her on the main poster at all. There’s a few spaces where they easily could’ve inserted her, too. Personally, I was really disappointed by that, especially because they gave her top billing on the poster and then didn’t include her at all.

As a side note, though, I love the IMAX poster with Luke, Leia, Rey and Kylo on it. I’m really tempted to order it. That’s the only poster for the film that I would say is on par with everything released for The Last Jedi –– the posters for that film were FLAWLESS.

This Imax poster and the teaser one for TLJ are the only ones that I really loved, most of the others were a big deception. The main ones are the worst, look more like an Avengers posters than SW, what a shame.

 

Yeah, I agree, the IMAX poster for The Rise of Skywalker and the teaser poster for The Last Jedi are probably the two best ones. I liked the main poster and all of the character posters for The Last Jedi as well, but I do think that, generally speaking, the posters for the Sequel Trilogy as a whole were all a bit cluttered and Avengers-esque. You don’t have to cram every single character onto the poster for it to be visually appealing. I think just focusing on the main characters (Rey, Kylo, Finn and Poe) and then maybe the inclusion of Chewie, the three main droids and/or the Original Trilogy heroes would suffice. All I can say is that at least all three main sequel posters are consistent with one another, but then again, they’re all a bit cluttered with all of the characters on them.
