I saw this new article about the destruction of the second Death Star, and posted it to a different thread, but it's just so good I thought I'd start a new thread for it. Reposting here:

There shouldn't have been a big hoedown with the Ewoks- everybody on Endor should have died:

    http://www.techinsider.io/endor-holocaust-star-wars-science-physics-2015-12

The funniest part is when they said they asked 11 physicists what would have happened to Endor.

"Almost all of them responded right away." Lol, what a bunch of nerds. :)

One of them actually replied with a four-page treatise, including illustrations.

Sure they tried that option during the Yavin Death Star battle, several areas of the forests was damaged by the fragments but I doubt those lovable furballs were wiped out.

Although I can no longer find the page, at one point this was addressed on this official Star Wars site. They essentially said that these people are taking it too literally, and you should just accept that a work of fiction may take a few liberties with physics.

They'll be dead now for sure. Knights Of Ren will have been to Endor - the final resting place of Lord Vader and wiped them out in a fanboy hissy fit. :)

This topic was covered a few years ago where the Death Star II blew up (epic fail) then the debris & radiation killed all the Ewoks  .
    It's on Wookiepedia somewhere.
The remaining storm troopers & crew members that lived spread rumors & lies about the Rebels.

Is that canon? I read how Neil Degrasai Tyson basic that it was a scientific thing that they would have been irradiated from the planet. But if The Ewoks died, and the rebels were on the planet/moon-thing AFTER he dsII exploded, the rebels would be taking in so much radiation and die alms of instantly during the celebration of their victory  .

In my headcanon the Death star was essentially a large antimatter producing reactor. Its destruction may have merely released the magnetically botled antimatter that would have literally consumed the station, i.e. vaporized everything thus there would not have been a fallout of huge chunks like the article suggested, but probably a lot of radiation.

The article and its authors are overlooking one crucial detail:

The deflector shield generator the Rebels attacked exclusively protected the Death Star according to the holoimage in the Rebels' briefing. Yet there must have been another planetary deflector shield which had to be opened to allow the Tydirium passage and to land somewhere closer to the generator.

Thus - in the absence of Information suggesting the contrary - the planetary shield of Endor would have protected from either debris or radiation that could have made the moon's surface uninhabitable.

I dont think the Ewoks burned up in a massive forest fire after the explosion of the Death Star. First off Endor consists of Douglas firs, and redwoods, which are not only fire resistant, but thrive in areas that are prone to forest fires. Seeing they live high up in the trees, for the most part, they would be out of the reach of any ground fire, if they can survive the smoke.
Ewoks, intentionally or unintentionally practice forest management, by using small trees and plants as building supplies or firewood, clearing the forest floor from flammable materials. The ewoks have survived a long time on endor, which is prone to forest fires, they know how to survive.

Yes but the redwood forest survived. Since ewoks are so closely tied to the trees, they too would survive. Dinosaurs weren't good survivors.

I agree. Tigers, and especially their eyes are much more of a Survivor.
