The Fate of Ben Solo

the novelization tracks so different for me. i don't get that Ren actually hesitates much here. the description of him leaving the chamber makes him sound so pulled together ~ and directly preceding this moment Snoke is all "you're such a special snowflake" (makes me want to puke). i don't feel Ren break until later in the novel, but then again, Foster was sorta writing blind, it seems. i prefer the way it's done in the movie.

and in the movie, Snoke's taunting in the scene takes the place of the grotesque smile effectively for me. "you, Master of the Knights of Ren," he says, and it's so...icky. hahaha

bleh. Snoke revolts me. to the point of inarticulation.

i'm saying dumb Ben deserves compassion.
and maybe a hug from mum is the best defense again monsters.

yeah ~ but we have no idea what he's finishing. no idea what he understands about what he's finishing. no idea if he understands.
it's the interesting thing about Kylo Ren that his intentions are completely inscrutable. that's why we have threads asking questions about his "secret mission" or people speculating that he's a double-agent (spurious though that may be).

i totally welcome your perspective to this thread (otherwise we're all just bopping along uncontested ~ hahaha).
i don't mind being challenged about why i think Ben is salvageable. and i don't mind that other people think he isn't.
and i don't disagree that some justice must be served, but i blanch at the suggestion of torture as punishment ~ that just makes monsters of all of us.

i feel like the movie and the other canon sources have given us enough of a glimpse into Kylo Ren's psyche to see that he's a deranged individual, quite possibly incapable of a certain level of reasoning.
maybe we just disagree on whether that's his fault.
i personally don't think it is since we have an inkling that his mind has been polluted by Snoke since he was a child.

and we no doubt bring a lot of our own life values to the table when talking about things like redemption and justice, etc.
as a child i rooted for Luke to save Vader in the OT. rooted hard.
and Vader was arguably the most remorseless murderer in the galaxy.
rooting for Ben is frankly easy by comparison.

it may well be what's coming to him, but what a shame that Han would have died for nothing and Luke will have to live with this failure forever.

i hope Star Wars proves a more optimistic galaxy than that.
if there's no hope for redemption for people who have taken the wrong path in a purely mythical world where compassion and justice can be perfect, what chance is there for people in the real one?

 

yeah, i know that's bothersome (and it should be).
but i am no one to judge anyone. and i don't judge myself for loving Vader as i did (and do).
i just hope for the best for all, regardless.

even stupid Hux, though i do want to see him get his teeth kicked in (see, i can be vicious!).
now Snoke, on the other hand...well, even i have to draw a line with compassion somewhere ~ hahaha
