I like this thread! I'm jealous I never thought of it. Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. I may just make my new home right here in this thread. Let me put together some thoughts.

OK for starters I want dark side energy to be present somewhere in the Temple. And that it won't be explained right away which will give us the viewers a lot of speculation and much to debate about.

Maybe even a hidden chamber with sith artifacts.

Whatever Luke does to kill time, what he eats, etc.

No but in all seriousness, I can't wait to find out what it might contain. Problem is that I can't even begin to imagine what it is, so this thread should shed some speculation on that :)

History. I'd like it to contain something that will teach us a little bit about where the Jedi came from. Now that canon has been reset, it's really exciting to dive into those roots.

Are there any references of Yoda ever having anything to do with a Jedi Temple or were they even before his time? I never got much into the EU other than The New Jedi Order books and KOTOR games. Dabbled in other areas that's about it.

I read somewhere they did terrible things on par with the Christian crusades. Such as sending in a master and an apprentice. If the apprentice didn't pass the trial they both died.

Can someone shed some light on 'previous' canon about this subject?

It could be a Dagobal style planet with both light and dark influences. I guess it has some Jedi Holocrons. But I think that we are told that he looks for the Temple, we don't know if he actually found it and if it is there. Maybe one of the first things he does with Rey is to continue the search...

Also, do we think that this first Jedi temple is "proper" Jedi or is it even before the Jedi and Sith parted on different paths of the Force?

Yes! That would be amazing. And what if the journal tells the future as well as the present and the past, but in a kind of way that was open to interpretation.

I hope it will be pre-schism, from a time when there was truly balance, where the Jedi were able to use elements of the dark side in a controlled way and that Luke goes back to those teachings.

Agreed. I'm not sure if Luke has found it or if it is found with Rey. We will either get to see it on film or some other medium. Either way, I am excited.

This would be very interesting. I'm not sure if Luke will use Dark-side teachings. But I would definitely think it'd be cool! :)

I'd like to see an ancient library ( with physical books) , prehaps underground or beneath the sea, and yes, we should see the Journal of the Whills in there (which probably contains information on Snoke's origins). We will probably get some kind of monster/beast that guards the temple itself (a pet for Luke to keep him company)

I'm thinking whatever he found there it will somehow tie into him going dormant with the Force. After all, the force has only just Awakened according to Snoke.
Maybe Luke found out that what the Jedi and Sith have been doing all along is some how wrong and the Force should neither be used or allowed to use someone. Then his dilemma will be telling Rey, I can't train you.

All very interesting. I'd love to see it being both Jedi and SIth. Holocrons, (ancient) Kyber Crystals, Tombes and maybe a "Dagobah-cave"-like place.

This comes from Season 1 of Rebels with the Jedi Temple on Lothal. You see mummified remains and everything. Interesting enough, Ezra's trial involves Yoda, and it is implied that it really is Yoda, not some generic specter. So if Yoda is aware of Kanaan and Ezra while on Dagobah, it makes you wonder what happens to them before the events of ESB.

I think that Luke was looking for the first temple so that he could connect with the essence of the Force from a time before the Jedi became dogmatic and trapped in tradition. Recall that it was the rebellious Jedi, Qui Gon who learned to transcend death.

I think that based upon statements made in the PT, and in the OT, Yoda believed that the Jedi failed (and demonstrably did) as an organization and some sense of this was passed on to Luke.

Looking for the First Temple would be like a modern mystic heading into the wilderness to connect directly with the God of the Old Testament. "I don't want to be told what to believe, I want to meet I AM THAT I AM and KNOW the truth for myself."

Luke tried to recreate the Academy and pass on what he had learned, and it failed miserably. He would have interpreted this as the will of the Force that the Jedi not be reborn as the same group that failed, giving rise to the Empire.

Personally i always considered Jedi and Sith the same thing with one minor difference, The Jedi are the unselfish who seek other people welfare while the Sith are the selfish ones who seek their own material gain (i can understand the Sith but the Jedi sounds weird to me, because despite being a social aware cult they are actually an extreme apartheid society were segregation reigns).

For what i've seen and read in the last months i can safelly state that the new trilogy will deal with the Jedi/Sith questions in a different maner, perhaps following a more politically correct aproach, i believe:

    - Jedi and Sith will be almost the same thing, kinda, no big split between them, even bad guys can do good things and vice-versa.
    - Force Ghosts are no more, they deal so many moral and physical questions that is better to let them be in the past.
    - Force Powers will go over the top for the force users, simple force chokes are weak things today (an apprentice stoping pistol blasts?)
    - There might be a low level of Force Users, perhaps force sensitives who are aware of the force, like Leia and Maz or the Inquisitors.
    - Artifacts are extremly important now, they became iconoplasts.
    - Things, characters and events set up in the Prequel trilogy might get forgotten or lost completely.

About the Jedi Temples, i consider they are a "narrative back door", because of Yoda and Dagobah, the dark temple/dark tree hide the powerfull jedi presence from other force users, in this way is easy to introduce new force user characters or surviving old ones simply by placing them in proximity of an old jedi/sith temple, this actually provide the best explanation why Luke's localition is unknown.

I really wish I could find it again, but somewhere along the way I recall reading that

The PT was about the Unifying Force (how focusing on the Unifying Force blinded the Jedi...Qui Gon says "I told you so.")

The OT was about the Living Force (Feeling it, being in the moment, Yoda teaches this to Luke)

The ST will be about the Cosmic Force (The will of the Force, the Force as more of an active participant in the story, the Tao, etc.)

Edit to add: It was a comment in an interview with someone from the story group, Filoni, Lucas himself, but in any case not mere fan speculation
