Since all villains lost on VII, I think they need to do a huge damage to the Resistence and the heroes.
Also, I will go crazy and say that Kylo Ren should be the character with the most screen time aside of Rey. They really need to flesh him out even more, since to me he was the most interesting and badass of the new characters. Thoughts?

Yeah i totally agree, i think kylo does need more screen time, i enjoyed the conflict he went through, you can really tell hes so lost in doubt and fear.

I don't like rey that much, she seems a bit uninteresting.

FYI - Because this contains still-spoilery stuff, we're going to move this to the TFA spoiler forum for the time being. It'll be moved back after a couple of weeks.

Are you suggesting that they need to... strike back?

After a movie heavily inspired by ANH we'll probably have a new one heaily inspired by ESB ;) But I loved that in TFA stormtroopers were actually shown as a strong and professional army instead of bunch of incompetent losers who can't hit anything like in OT or in Rebels.

Well, the First Order destroyed the senate of the new republic (on Hosnian Prime), which is kind of a win for them. However, I agree that some of the villains need a 'personal' win.

I think Luke will reject Rey at the beginning of Episode VIII. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren will be training with Snoke. By the end of the movie Rey will lose a fight with a now-fully-trained Kylo Ren and that defeat will cost the life of someone dear. That makes Luke change his mind and he starts training Rey. Movie ends. In Episode IX Rey will be a full Jedi.

I don't know. Rey is already a sort of reluctant hero. A reluctant student and a reluctant teacher seems too much. We have already lost Han. I do not think the story needs more deaths to convince Luke that Rey needs to be trained. People will die in Episode VIII, but their deaths will not be used (storywise) to change Luke's mind.

The First Order destroys the Hosnian System, seat of the Republic, and presumably a very large portion of their fleet and kills Han Solo. On the other side of things, the Resistance destroys Starkiller Base and completes the map to Luke Skywalker. I'm not entirely sure either side has tipped the scales in their favor.

The First Order had the biggest win of the movie considering they destroyed the new republic with the push of a button. Come episode 8 they'll be in control of the Galaxy.

Did they really confirmed that they destroyed the entire system? When I saw this scene - to me it was only a destruction of a planet and its moons, nothing else. Smaller "planets" were too big when compared to the main one (so they did not lok like other planets orbiting that sun) and the explosion was seen from Takodana - so it'd look ok if Takodana and destroyed planet with its moons was in the same system).

@Aquila; I got the impression that it was a single planet (Hosnian Prime) and four moons. Other people have said otherwise, but watching, I got the same impression you did. They are very small in comparison to the main planet that is targeted.

Exactly- I think Hux gets "Employee of the Month" for urging Snoke to use the weapon. Taking out the Republic's seat of power in a day?! Even Sheev Palpatine would be impressed.

I predict that Episode VIII will show the First Order moving to the center of the Galaxy to fill the power vacuum.

I think now that the bridge has been built they can show Kylos complete fall to the dark side and focus on character building to set up the third film. I think the New Order will in fact tear ass on the Resistance in the next film. Probably at the end of the film after Kylo has fallen to the Dark Side.

On a strategic note the damage had already been done, the New Republic has been devastated and with the utter chaos it has been thrown in to the First Order can swoop in claiming to be bastions of order. The only real loss they had was losing Starkiller, but it's a bittersweet victory for the Resistance since the real damage has already happened. The fact that the Resistance "fleet" seemed to consist of a couple X-Wing squadrons is not a good sign.

On a personal note Phasma will need to get revenge on Finn for humiliating her. Hux wants to get back at Poe for being integral in destroying his beloved weapon. Kylo Ren wants to get back at Rey for defeating and severely wounding him. I suspect all three will get their revenge in one form or another.

Yeah, I didn't even counted the planet(s) Starkiller Base destroyed lol, and thinking about it both sides did had wins. To me, the ending had the feel that the heroes won, and I'm fine with it, but I don't want to see the villains losing in all films of the new trilogy. I want the sense of danger and urgency back.

Well think about Episode IV our heroes lost Alderaan, of course we had no real reason why the planet was important other than being Leia's home. This was followed by the Empire losing the Death Star, Darth Vader getting launched into space, and our heroes getting a big celebration. So this sort of ending isn't without precedent.

The only result for our heroes that bugged me was the Battle of Takodana getting resolved pretty easily but I think they try to make the point that the First Order could've won but they withdrew because they had Rey

@Bluestreaking; It does seem underwhelming that the Resistance consists of a handful of X-Wings. I suspect the destruction of Hosnian Prime will actually strengthen the Resistance. Prior to Starkiller Base being operational, the Republic has been unwilling to openly support the Resistance. I think a lot of planetary systems are going to see the true threat of the First Order and throw their support to the Resistance.
