Wholeheartely agree. He clearly gave his all, and he clearly had respect for the source material and themes. Basically, he resurrected SW, and laid the foundations. Yes, we can fault him for "doing another death star", but he really did introduce some new elements that could be expanded, and he set up a great character in Rey, as well as Finn.

I do not agree that most TLJ haters hated this...every reaction seems to point to this being a well received film by all audiences. Some did not, but the general good reception says it all. I really liked it, and feel it was terrible in hindsight that JJ didn't stick around for all 3 movies.

The only problem with TFA in my opinion was the release of a great poster to hang it in my wall. TLJ at least has a great poster (teaser of course)...hahahah
Unfortunately this is THE problem with TFA. I have the OT classics posters and TLJ but its missing TFA.

I would rather have a good movie than a good poster, but yeah, you're right. The posters (especially the teaser poster) of TLJ are one of the best SW posters ever. I'm exited for the poster of IX.

Best SW posters? Hell this is one of the best movie posters in general in recent years. Especially among big blockbusters.
I collect movie posters as well and quite frankly I hate how lazy studios have gotten in them.

Really liked that movie (You Were Never Really Here) and that is without a doubt a perfect poster for it.

He does make a great Star Wars movie. I remember sitting in the theater watching his Star Trek reboot and thinking, "Wow JJ makes a great Star Wars movie." I'm glad he got the chance to do it with an actual Star Wars movie.

I thought TFA was a great movie the first time I saw it. The subsequent viewings tempered my outlook and showed me that it has (for me, at least) limited rewatchability. The fourth time I saw it in a theater, I started looking at my watch and then I knew that this movie will require a large pauses between the viewings to make me feel excited again. Some parts though - like wordless introduction of Rey - remain extraordinary.

Then TLJ came out and ruined it. :p

But, not in the way OP sees it. In my opinion, it is head and shoulders above TFA. It sheds all the stuff unnecessary for the story and goes to the core of characters while speaking to larger, overreaching themes. I can watch it every day (I don't, but I could) and never get bored. There is always something new to discover, new angle, new shot or composition, new meaning to discover. It's beautiful and emotional and immediately skyrocketed to the top my favorite SW films.

TFA was great reintroduction to the world, TLJ took us by the napes and pulled us into the heart of it. The best thing about TFA is that there would be no TLJ without it.

For me it was exactly the other way around. I watched TFA seven times in the cinemas and it got better and better. TLJ I watched three times and it got worse every time. It's amazing how opinions can differ.

TFA was just that. It was an introduction back into this world. It's delightful and such but it doesn't have the narrative depth that TLJ has, IMO.
It was necessary, again IMO, for TFA to be what it was. It had to re-acclimate everyone to this world and grab the attention of EVERYONE who isn't a fan of space operas.

I'm a STAR WARS fan through and through. I was 12 years old when I saw the very 1st STAR WARS. Since then, DARTH VADER has been my hero!
I just want to say one thing. I have only seen THE FORCE AWAKENS and not Episode 8. But, after watching TFA's, if Finn and Rey get together as a couple, I will NEVER watch another STAR WARS movie as long as I live!

That, and to follow what will happen in E9. I heard E8 was better than E7. Was it? I haven't seen it. My favorite SW's episode is REVENGE OF THE SITH. When my hero, DARTH VADER is made.
Lately, I haven't been keeping up with SW's. I'm a BIG fan of MCU. WINTER SOLDIER is my hero in MCU.

Quite bold to say something like that... But they aren't together. Kylo and Rey on the other side... :p

    Then go and watch it.

I do agree with those who say the film doesn't have a lot of rewatch value.. but I still really like it.

I guess J.J. leaned more towards impact than depth, which makes sense for the first film in a trilogy. Remember that A New Hope was designed to work solely on it's own, in case it failed at box office and there weren't sequels. It isn't fair to compare the two imo.

It all has to do with what you ( or in this case, I ) believe in.

Thanks, it is a nice place.

    Welcome, by the way!

Still a little confused by "what you (or in this case, I) believe in" means, though.

I have to agree. I actually just got the 4 of 4, 9.5 x 12 inch AMC poster (Kylo Ren & Finn facing off in the forest) because I like that better than the official poster for the movie. I have to get a custom mat made for that and then frame it.

As someone who really doesn't like VIII, I also disagree with the idea that most of the haters of TLJ also dislike TFA. Maybe I'm just the exception. I figured there would be problems with VII, seeing as how Bob Iger and Disney insisted a film come out in December 2015. Disney really set themselves up for a fan backlash by that action alone. I can still watch this film and enjoy it for what it is. I can't say the same for VIII. I wish I felt the same about VIII as say @LadyMusashi. I fought with it for months, argued with myself that it was GREAT, and even argued here that it was. But I never could get over that nagging feeling I had when I first left the theater.

Rogue One? That's a film I love and could watch every day!

As for TFA, I don't think it's a great film (that adjective gets thrown around WAY TOO often), but it was fun. I wanted to know more about the characters, Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo. I liked the fact that Kylo killed Han. It made him feel much more evil than he would have otherwise. As far as reboots go, it did its job.

Could it have been better? Of course. Perhaps had LFL and Disney actually sat down and drawn up a real plan, then yeah, it would have been better. But they didn't and we are where we are. Hopefully JJ and Chris can come up with a great script, one that will bring this all home.
