After seing the movie a couple of times, and listening to the OST as well, I think the following:
    * John Williams did a good job, but
    * John Williams can do it far better.

I'm sorry for the precuel haters, but I really think that The force Awakens is lacking a good OST.

The precuels had such themes and songs that were just big: duels of fates (ep. 1), anakin vs obiwan (ep. 3), etc...

The only theme I can remember of The Force Awakens is the finale theme (just before the credits).

    I completely disagree.

Just because the OST isn't as pronounced as the others it doesn't make it poor.

I much prefer it to the PT soundtracks, which have just one track that I like, whereas this OST alone I love at least two thirds of it.

Rey's Theme is the best piece of Star Wars music ever made.

(It is preQuel, by the way, not precuel. Sorry, the pedant in me cannot resist)

Well, sorry for that, I'm not a native English writer :-(

I do thing the TFA OST is good, but my feelings is that the other 6 episodes are better in this aspect.

Have you sat down and listened to all the soundtracks from beginning to end? I thought the same as you after seeing the movie twice but after sitting down and listening to the music I started to like it very much. Attack on Jakku village, Reys theme, March of the Resistance and Jedi Steps and Finale all fantastic imo.

Yes, the OST is very good...

My point is that you can't compare it to Duel of Fates, Anakin vs ObiWan, Imperial March or the big song we all know from other films.

    Original Sound Track?

These 3 are probably in my bottom 5 major Star Wars themes. So, I guess its a matter of taste. I'm fine with missing a Duel of the Fates or Battle of the Heroes as they were never what I loved about Star Wars scores.

The best scores are the less obvious ones, the calmer more emotional ones.

Hence why for me Yoda and The Force was my favourite until Rey's Theme.

The Empire Strikes Back OST as a whole is probably the best one because it has a lot more deeper tones in the music, and isn't all grandiose and bombastic (bar the Imperial March).

With the exception of Rey's theme and Jedi Steps I felt the soundtrack was rather bland. It wasn't enough to effect my enjoyment of the movie, but there were times I was sitting there going 'where is the music?' or 'why isn't there a bigger buildup music wise going on right here?". Something bad would happen and the music was just like 'bom BOM BOMMMMMM', almost like a soap opera.

There are no stupid questions. :)
    OST= Original Soundtrack

I actually enjoy the soundtrack a lot and think is a lot better than e.g. Phantom Menace.

I have been listening to it for a few times now, and it really grows on to you. It doesn't have these big choral pieces that Episode 1 had, or RotJ (with Luke facing Darth Vader), but rather elements that are played throughout the disk. I love Rey's Theme, and how it echoes is Ways of the Force, Jedi Steps and other pieces. And yesterday I was humming the whole evening the Resistance tune (really, it just stuck in my head). Also Kylo Rey's/Snoke theme is repeated and brings interesting constrast to delicacy of Rey's Theme. I am really looking forward how they will be developed in the future films.

But to each person his/her taste; we cannot all like the same stuff.

I agree, I was listening for the music and it was often quiet or completely absent.

Yes it is lacking a memorable OST, and as a friend of mine ranted the other day: "He hasn't made a hummable tune since Jurassic Park!"

However.. there was so much going on in this picture, that a more subdued score was needed so it wouldn't become overwhelming. I mentioned this in another thread, but part of John Williams' process is to make the "boring" parts more interesting. The Force Awakens was lacking in slower, more boring parts. There really weren't many gaps for Williams to pop his head in and make an appearance - so JJ's ADHD editing is to blame more than anything.

People have to remember that we have had the OT music swirling about our brains for 30 years and PT music swirling about our brains for 15 years.
Let's judge ST music 15 years from now :p
I was humming a bit of Phantom Menace music the other day and I don't even know the name of it. What I do know is that I wasn't humming it 15 years ago. No, not Duel of the Fates.

I prefer this soundtrack to the prequels because when I listen to it I have memories of a good movie rather than terrible ones.

A soundtrack always makes or breaks a movie besides the editing, and I think, despite its detractors, The PT has a much "sleeker" soundtrack that was instantly recognizable while The OT was much more classical and EPIC in a smaller way .
