See, we have our gentlemen of the past with walking sticks at home, and for the public view something more ornate. He has the staff to have the appearance of a begger and go unnoticed, but he has the position and skill of a true warrior and believer, hence his lightbow.

My thoughts about the force in R1 was it wasnt used by anyone person in the film. I think the force was more around them. helping them, guiding them. besides Vader using the force.

Yes, this is exactly what I was trying to convey in my original post. Though, you say it most succinctly!

I saw Rogue One for a second time this past weekend, and noticed Baze's character arc this time around.

Baze developed from someone that had seemingly lost faith in the Force to one that embraced the destiny the Force had paved for him. At the start of the film, Baze and his colleague Chirrut became (essentially) unemployed -- they could no longer guard the Whills in the temple on Jedha -- and forced to beg on the streets. Baze made fun of Chirrut saying he was a "fool" to believe in the Force, as much as he did, and to think of himself to be a pseudo-Jedi. Throughout the film, Baze tosses around the valediction "good luck" instead of embracing Chirrut's own mantra: "I'm one with the Force; the Force is with me." Throughout the film and after all the trials he and his colleague went through, by the time Chirrut dies on Scarif, Baze adopts his friend's mantra and reconciles. From the rejection of "luck" and use of the word "fool", there is much of Obi-Wan Kenobi written into Baze's character.

Another cool thing I noticed was that when Chirrut is heard on the streets of Jedha, he is heard telling passersby, "May the Force of others be with you." this was the original mantra as written in one of George Lucas's early drafts of Star Wars.

Reminds me of Obi-Wan in ANH: "In my experience, there's no such thing as luck."
EDIT: Just realised you said as much yourself, my apologies!

Well I think that the implication among those who believe is that the Force can be providential. Hence "May the Force . . ."

The interesting thing I would point to is balance. Lucas said that what caused imbalance in the force was selfish action against others (my very short handed paraphrase.) This is why symbiosis is such a PM theme. This creates a meta-narrative that both the actions of darksiders and oppressive imperials have something motivationally united. A properly balanced system is where mutual benefit is sought. Given that we see the heroes risk over and over for others.

In another era Chirrut would have made a heck of a Jedi!

I think it's conveyed just like in ANH about it being an ancient religion. Kind of a scarcity.

Which reminds me in a way Luke awakens the Force in ANH. It took Obi Wan to do it. To bring it out in Luke.
