Did Lucas ever explain this statement by Vader?

When I was a kid in '77 and heard this line, I thought that all the X-Wing pilots had the force....just Luke had it "stronger"

For me is Vader sensing that the force is strong in that particularly X-wing, piloted by Luke.

Yeah but doesn't that statement lead us to believe that quite a few pilots had the force?

Yes.. in fact I'd say I think Star Wars infers EVERYBODY can have some ability with the Force, even if it's unconsciously. Certainly there seems to be a belief that they can, hence the reason why they say "May the Force be with you" as a parting phrase. ALL living things are connected to the Force.

    I also don't think that's ever changed.

I sometimes think there was a misconception amongst some people that the prequels changed all that with midichlorians and thought it introduced a concept of 'haves' and 'have not nots'. But all we ever learned there is that Anakin has an unusually HIGH amount - maybe more than even master Yoda! - but that just suggests a scale where there is such a thing as a 'low' amount. So 'some', but not necessarily 'none'.

EVERYBODY has midichlorians, because ALL living things have midichlorians, and the Force is an energy field created by ALL living things. Not just some.

So you could have a 'low' midichlorian count and not be considered to be Jedi material or a 'master of the Force' - not even close - but you could still have enough to be 'accidentally' good at what you do, even if you're not consciously 'meditating' with the Force (and "nothing happens by accident").

It might be why Han Solo is so lucky so often. He's just that little bit more sensitive to the Force (and "there's no such thing as luck").

So yes, I'd say ALL the pilots have a little bit of Force sensitivity; they are just not strong with it. Unlike Luke, and Vader notices!

Not at the time the movie was made, I guess.
This notion that all living beings have some connection with the force and a particularly level of midiclhorians are more recent. Prequels, broom boy, Finn, etc...
But of course that knowing what we know now you can have that point of view regarding that scene in ANH.

From earlier in the movie "... It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us..."

One of the best lines in ANH.. Vader senses there's something special about the pilot of the X wing, even without realizing who he is.

Vader's comment coincides with Luke hearing Obi-Wan's disembodied voice - through the Force (we assume). Basically, he's just providing the audience context to what's happening. The situation will be resolved by Luke trusting the Force. So Vader's statement (to absolutely no one) is reinforcing that premise.

I think you all forget Vader is a Sith, a being powered and fueled by the hatred and the Dark Side.

Anakin Skywalker once was a very good pilot (only human to have won a pod race) and Vader inherited that ability and that skill.
In this particular scene, Vader is chasing an (yet unknown) pilot. And Vader realizes this pilot is escaping him, or at least, comfortably avoiding his chaser.

That makes Vader enter in a cold hatred. Afterall, HE IS THE BEST PILOT in the galaxy ! So who is that .... that other pilot ?

Truly. I can say you : at this time, Vader is just using the worst insults the Sith language ever used.
But this couldn't occur onscreen, or dozens and dozens of children would be shocked.
So the narrator slightly changed the lines.
Instead of "By the Force of the holy sh*! Hey, that f* bast* pilot is way better than me. You mor*. You rasc*. You son of a b*" and all these sort of things - and trust me : this is not a pleasure for me to write these offending words, but I had to be honest with you.
    Don't forget.
    Vader is a Sith.
    He is fueled by hatred.

    Amen.

(2nd degree - I hope everyone takes my post with humor)

I don’t really see why this line needs any explanation. Vader says the Force is strong with Luke because… the Force is strong with Luke.

If anything, it would have been a continuity error if Vader didn’t sense the strong Force in Luke (which may or may not have been amplified or awakened by Obi-Wan).

I agree with the position that all living things have some level of the Force in them, but it really doesn’t matter in terms of this line. Whether the other pilots have some amount of the Force or not, Luke has a much higher sensitivity than they do.

There are still quite a few fans who assume, or insist, that the presence of the force in any detectable way must be exclusively connected to Jedi or people who will become Jedi.
