Force Friday weekend is also Labor Day weekend in the US. Idk if it means anything but the first trailer was released the day after thanksgiving which is "Black Friday", maybe they will do the same with labor day? Also although I realize officially Sept is too early for it to be fall, people associate Sept with fall so it would definitely fit within the "Fall Trailer" parameters. I hope we get a good 2:30 to 3:00 min worth of footage.

I may be in the minority, but I think the trailer will be shown at D23. It's too much of an investment for Disney to NOT have something big planned to be shown for that expo. Other than actual scenes/footage, it doesn't get much bigger than a trailer.

Disney doesn't really have another big release until October. Maybe D23 in mid-August?
Let's be honest though. Does Star Wars really need a trailer? We're all rabidly awaiting the release. I know a guy who has gotten a December 18, 2015 tattoo (although it's all been translated to Aurebesh). And as soon as the first TV spot hits over Thanksgiving every other person ont he planet will be foaming at the mouth too. The trailer is really sort of pointless. I wouldn't be ha;f surprised, knowing Abrams' disdain for them, if there wasn't one until the fall, and it might not contain much more than what we've already seen. Just a crazy hunch.
I will say this - they can't use Luke in ANYTHING. Audiences will revolt if they think it's the continuation of his story when it's really about an entire new gang and he's just a teeny tiny bit player. No toys, not images, nothing. His role in the movie will have to be downplayed as much as possible, to the point that most folks won't even be aware he's in it. Because... he's not.

We already have too much information, I just hope this new trailer does not tell us too much about the plot. Luke, MSV and Snoke (just a shape, or shadow..not too much) will be cool to see!

Disney put out a press release for Force Friday back in May. That's a big deal. IMO, I think they announce the trailer and plans for it to be released like the Thanksgiving teaser at D23.

Remember it's 3 weeks from 8/15 where TFA will showcased (in some way) at D23 until 9/4 which is Force Friday. That's 3 weeks to blitz and promote the trailer and merchandise.

Imagine all the media coverage for it if we all knew the trailer coincided with the massive marketed day? That's huge.

Don't see a great film on Force Friday to engineer a trailer release for what is largely the early ignition of the Christmas season for toy retailers. Also we're hearing now music won't be completed until mid-September, so a full trailer with music seems appropriate so factor a few weeks after the music is finished.

As for Force Friday they know fans will get enough spoilers from the toys themselves and I'm not sure you need a trailer just as school gets back and if you do, it's just a teaser.

By the way you get a LOT of spoiler clarification from toys, games and other merchandise. A TCG is a platinum find if there is one, because TCG's get privy to actual dialog in the film. A role playing book if there is one, is also PLATINUM right now. Fan sites should be trolling for sources on either, they've provided huge leaks before. For example, we knew what Naboo was called and what it would largely look like from a Hasbro game sku if memory serves. So things like planet name confirmations are coming.

More likely I think we'll get a poster reveal at D23 and an opening crawl for Force Friday (the crawl after all can help sell the toys) and then around mid-term in the third week of October the trailer releases on the internet.

I also think we're getting a Rogue One teaser faster than we might expect, like maybe just in time to tag in front of TFA, but I digress.

This gives you the right window into the big "hammer" films that start releasing once November rolls around.

And by "Mass-Consumption Hysteria Friday" (the day after Thanksgiving), we'll all be sick of it.

And so will begin the real awful 30 days before release, where not only is each day slowing down, but we'll get volumes of "I've seen the film, I can't tell you anything, but it is horrible and Star Wars is dead" posts that will ruin the internet for weeks.

It's like I have to shut my internet access off and just go read some Edgar Allen Poe or something for a month, because traditionally fan sites get ugly in the last few weeks leading to a release, trolls do their most harm in that time I find.

tl;dr - Full trailer in Mid to Late October a few weeks after the soundtrack completes recording.

LOL! I think that falls under "slightly used"

We aren't in an age where trailers need to be attached to films anymore. Sure it's fun and it's tradition, but the YouTube views are where the value is at. I'm sure that they have a very advanced algorithm that tells them when people are on their computers the most, and they will release it a little before that for maximum impact.

    Nailed it, bruh.

They released the November teaser with no specific film and that ended up being huge still. (It eventually was attached to the Hobbit).

I think that the trailer will be put in front of every movie playing Labor Day weekend like the previous teaser waa during thanksgiving weekend.

I hope Force Friday, because it would stimulate the sale of toys and new books, but those might generate enough publicity by themselves.

JJ said it would be out in the fall, so D23 is out. I'm thinking September. Force Friday at the earliest.

I think they'll do something exclusive for D23 (maybe Rogue related and make some casting announcements), but I don't think they'll show trailer. September 4th is the earliest date I can see - it will be a complete force push, pun intended.

Do you remember how many teasers/trailers prequels had? With two teasers and BTS out already, if they want only one trailer before the release, it is not impossible for them to wait by NY comic con (8-11 October). If they go for September, it is possible that we will get two trailers or at least extended TV spots closer to the release.

I think the movie industry considers August to be fall. By mid-August, Hollywood is finished releasing big budget movies, so to them summer is over.

Now it's also fair to say that mid-August is a bad time to release a trailer, since there will be no big movies to attach it to, but I'm not sure that matters anymore. Trailers for giant movies like Star Wars are more for the internet audience than the theater these days.

I'm going to agree with @Chairman Kaga and say they Disney doesn't need to release two more trailers to sell this movie - but I still think that they will, even if just out of habit. And if there are going to be 2 full trailers, then either D23 or Force Friday would make sense fro the first one. I guess it depends how important it is for Disney to draw press attention to their company event. If they want to start building D23 up in terms of public awareness, they can't do much better than releasing the new Star Wars trailer - especially if that trailer includes our first look at Luke Skywalker.
