I think that most of us agree that we have not seen the last of Luke Skywalker in one form or another despite his “dying” at the end of the The Last Jedi. Assuming that Luke is to return in some form, how will the character be used going forward?

1/ Will Luke be used in a similar fashion to the force ghosts of Obi-Wan and Yoda in the original trilogy? Perhaps he will make a glorified cameo and appear to Rey to pass along some valuable information or maybe even to instruct her on how to train a new generation of Jedi? To me this seems that safest and most likely way he would return.

2/ Another possibility (I know I may be taking a shot in the dark here) could be that as Yoda seemed to return to the physical world, Luke could do the same.

In my opinion, Yoda clearly had a physical presence in the real world in The Last Jedi. He wasn’t simply a force ghost as we have seen force ghosts used in the past...Yoda’s use of force lightning to destroy the tree is clear proof to me of his abilty to exist in and effect the real world.

At one point in his scripts for the original trilogy George Lucas had Obi Wan returning from the dead to take regain his physical form. Kind of the same way Gandalf returned in The Lord of the Rings. Could Luke return in the same fashion that Gandalf did?

The creative team behind The Force Awakens had both Anakin and Darth Vader’s force ghosts (not sure how they were to be used) making appearances in that film. They have already had Yoda seemingly return to the physical world...Point being, there seems to be a willingness to delve into this realm of the force that we really don’t know much about. Maybe it’s not unusual for Jedi (who clearly are alive on some higher plane of existence) to return to physical form?

JJ Abrams is on record as saying that Episode XI would unite all three trilogies...Complete speculation on my part, but could Abrams be talking about a climatic battle between the the light and the dark side of the force that would include the return to physical form all the great Jedi + Sith of all three trilogies to give give Episode XI a truly epic conclusion? Again, I know I am really reaching here, but I just thought I’d throw it out there.

3/ Luke is dead and simply will never return...I find this highly unlikely, but one never knows. Maybe the creative team still feel (he didn’t have a bigger role in TFA because the writers felt every time he would come into the script he dominated all scenes and the audience wouldn’t care about the new characters) that Luke takes away from the new characters and a clean break from the past is the best way to go

God Lucas sed Sith can't return as Ghosts. He also told Dave Filoni, (paraphrasing) "never let canon stand in the way of a good story".

    So, uhm, maybe!

IMO it would be dumb having a bunch of force ghosts fighting. It wouldn't be the same as the characters still living. Also it wouldn't make sense since you can't kill a ghost with a lightsaber. They're already dead.

Where they took the story in The Last Jedi its now nearly impossible to bring back Luke or Snoke in a good way.

No idea what they're doing with force ghosts in the new canon... maybe they can just interact with nature, but can't use force powers or fight in any other way? Imagine if those natural disasters that some baddies think were bad luck were actual done by force ghosts that the enemy couldn't see. Maybe we'll see some giant storm that throws First Order troops around and we'll see Luke's force ghost doing that. It would be consistent with what Obi Wan says about becoming more powerful than you can possibly imagine.

Luke will appear as a Force ghost, sipping green milk, middle finger up, and rocking a shirt that says "Your Luke pre-TLJ theories SUCKED!"

I see him returning as a mentor to Rey and potentially other force sensitive users. It's the only way I see him return to the movies without changing it up completely. Unless, they mix the canon and have him return to the physical world, seeing him using the force to literally bring himself back could be cool. But, this would be a massive gamble.

Luke's last "See ya around, kid" makes me hope his force ghost visits Ben, not Rey. Force ghosts in previous movies have appeared just to talk to our heroes and offer support. I'm game to see a bona fide force ghost haunting this time: a conscience who can't be dismissed.

That would make Luke deciding to become a force ghost make sense. haunting Ben and getting him to question the dark side more would be something he can't do while alive.

I expect something like this, and agree his coming back in physical form would be a huge gamble.

That said, if the actress for Rey really isn't intending on coming back for more SW in the near future, maybe Luke the White starts his school and they kill off Rey at the end of 9?

But this would be cool too, and could be legitimately funny too.

I don't see Maz as a future master for Rey, a word of wisdom here and there perhaps, but Rey needs someone to talk to about the force and her training in EPIX, for exposition purposes if nothing else. I believe Force Ghost Luke be there to talk to Rey, and the audience, about the force.

The anthology From A Certain Point of View, particularly the story Master and Apprentice (Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan) shows that the Force Ghost can obtain a semblance of physical presence, but it is also implied that the very separation of individual consciousness from the Force is emotionally and existentially painful, so I can't see that being a thing that lasts. Additionally, Yoda had showed us in TLJ that Force Ghost can affect the physical world.

That being said, option 1 is the most likely with Luke advising Rey/influencing Kylo in their moments of weakness - to encourage Rey and exploit Kylo's weakness to the Light. He could have a single demonstration of power ('more powerful than you can possibly imagine'), like Yoda did in TLJ, to tip the scales when our heroes are in jeopardy.

Considering that Leia cannot take the mantel of teacher/mentor in IX, it stands to reason that JJ and Terrio will use Luke (no Star Wars writer and fan in the right mind will pass the opportunity to write for Luke). I can see a couple of scenes for Luke in the vein of Yoda burning the tree or when Luke (in Legends) talked to Cade.

So option 1 (with some touches of 2).

People are just behaving like Rey. She had heard stories of Luke and thought he would be a legend. She was wrong, initially. She hero she imagined was not the hero she would meet. Of course, until A New Hope literally marched onto the Crait battlefield. That Luke she remembered :p So the writers, who force the viewers to see the world through Rey's eyes, completely intended to make fans angry about act 1 and 2 Luke. But what matters is Luke in act III :p

As for Luke, he will haunt Kylo as a Force ghost.

My personal wish...Force Ghost Luke shows up to Kylo Ren, never speaks to him, just shows him family pictures and Han Solo Memes and laughs.

If they do have Luke as a force ghost, and I find it hard to believe they won't, they need to put rules on what he can and can't do. The Yoda lightning opens a can of worms and needs resolving.

Were you also complaining about rules when Luke force choked a pig in ROTJ? Or when the emperor used lightning in ROTJ/ Or when Qui Gon pushed over a droid with the force?

There are no rules. There have never been rules. :)

No it doesn’t. The film makers were paying attention to detail. Force ghost Obi-Wan moves through Dagobah and sits on a physical log just after he moves tree branches out of his way. The force ghost isn’t a ghost at all. They can manifest themselves physically, always could. I do believe that since they are now part of the force, they cannot interfere with the forces will. That’s why Obi-Wan tells Luke “If you choose to face Vader you will do so alone, I cannot interfere”. They can’t take away the free will of the living and can’t go against the will of the force.
