The Galaxy seems pretty apathetic

There are more ISIS members on Earth then there are in the Resistance by many factors. There are over 6 billion people on Earth and thousands to tens of thousands of ISIS of members on this planet. There are trillions of inhabitants of the Galaxy and at the beginning of TLJ maybe one thousand Resistance members that is being generous since the number we get is 400 hundred. In addition, no one out of trillions of people came to help the Resistance. I get from this that to most of the galaxy the Republic and the First Order are basically the same and the political situation doesn't really matter to them.

Not saying I hate the movie btw. This is a problem that Star Wars films have had previously.

I think it's two things. It's a matter of they don't know what's going on on other places and making them a small underdog gets the audience to pull for them more.

There is still a Republic fleet led by Lando somewhere out there
Billy Dee Williams spoiled that one
. The resistance almost functions like a private military organization with little funds and resources. A small force of enthusiasts might be more effective than a massive force which is impossible to resupply or more due to inadequete resources and funding. In fact, the Resistance is fighting an illegal war from the First Order and the resistance point of views.

But I understand where you are coming from. At its basis, it is a movie trope, typical to Star Wars: "a small band of rebels/resistance fighters" against impossible odds.

Remember that both of these films take about......one week of time. I imagine, only from Luke-Rey scenes, that only a few days pass in this film. I guess.....Finn-Rose had 18 hours, I believe, and there's a few mornings with Rey and Luke, and then the final battle. So it's probably one week or so between Poe meeting with Lor San Tekka and the Falcon lifting off with the remaining Resistance fighters.

This is part of the huge challenge that faced RJ. TFA/TLJ are basically one long film. So little time has passed and a lot has happened. The Republic was mostly wiped out. Starkiller based was destroyed. The rest of the Resistance is wiped out. The First Order's leadership is in chaos. A lot happened in a week.

I hope JJ gives the story some room. Start 4-6 years forward. It seems like it would be more of a civil war type of a conflict because both sides have taken such a beating. Who is funding the First Order. Are they the galaxy government by default? It seems like most of the galaxy is simply outside the control of either side.

George got roasted for trying to explain the inner workings of the republic. Of the galaxy. Trying to bring context to it all.

In the end, it's a 2 1/2 hour film that people are already saying is on the long side. This is where the books can help flesh this all out.

This is one are where I do not fault Lucas at all. He did a damn fine job of making the Galaxy feel massive and real in the prequels.
