As of today October 5th, we can't confirm the gender of the title character.

"Mandalorian", "new warrior", "lone gunfighter" are all gender-neutral terms in English. We shouldn't use SW official articles in other languages as evidence. Let's recall that for "The Last Jedi", the official translation in Spanish was "Los Últimos Jedi", in plural form, which led us to unnecessary speculation, until eventually Rian Johnson confirmed that it was meant in singular form.

Back to The Mandalorian, will it be a male? a female? Or something in between? Hey, it's the XXI century. Don't be surprised if they pull this off. Or will they keep the gender unrevealed for a number of seasons or the end of the show? Will it matter to you?

Once they reveal the name of the actor or actress playing the title character, we may know for sure. But what if they keep this a secret, even after the start of the show? Do we have similar precedents outside SW about this?

In SW, we have precedents of character secrecy. One of them lasted some years. For example, I recall the character of Darth Sidious didn't appear in the Ending credits in TPM and AOTC.

Ian McDiarmid was credited with Palpatine only. Although hard-core fans already knew he was playing both, Lucasfilm was very careful in not giving this away so easily for the rest of the fans. Even in the AOTC DVD, McDiarmid talked about his character being someone who apparently believed in peace and power of negotiation.

He delivered his fake background so perfectly... Like any master politician of our era! LOL

There were smaller cases of secrecy, which were gender-related. For example, the bounty hunter who delivers Chewbacca to Jabba:

The audience is led to believe that the bounty-hunter was a male, because of the electronic voice and C3PO's remark: *HE* has a thermal detonator. Minutes later, the audience discovers the bounty hunter was indeed female: Leia.

Or the bounty hunter in AOTC: a changeling who had a female form at the beginning.

Some people (like me in 2002) assumed that the alien was a male creature who had the ability to change into a female human form. However, this particular alien was indeed a female.

Will we witness something similar case of character secrecy in The Mandalorian? What are your thoughts at this point?

My guess would be male, revealed prior to the show even airing - if a cast list isn’t put out, then set leaks will likely spoil it anyway.

I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to have too many secrets lingering around the protagonist for a show/movie, and I think it’s much better if we’re left questioning the identity of other characters in this instance.

    This is our protagonist, right?

This guy definitely looks like a male to me. It would also fit the setting and theme of this series. I'm feeling alot of "the man without a name" vibe coming from it.

And of course it will be revealed from the get go, but his name on the other side... I hope this will be a mystery for some episodes.
