That is a very good point you make. I certainly hope they push Star Wars in a new direction without being tied to what has been done in the past. TFA stuck to the formula a tad too much for my taste, but the film excelled during the parts it was original (Han/Kylo scene, up-to-date gender/race dynamics, force back scene, storyline of a good stormtrooper, etc...) However, the main reason I feel Rey is a Skywalker is because Disney as a company cannot pass up the idea of NOT having a Skywalker. You mention in your previous quote "... it is better to create new original stories with a new dynamic.." I agree with you 1000000% here, but Disney execs will read that quote and run for the hills. In big corporations it is risky to stray from the formula. That was what George did with episode I-III.

And I agree with you! I was actually quite disappointed by TFA. For me it was woefully unoriginal so that perhaps shows my mindset. But as you say there were some fantastic original elements to it and one takes hope from that. However, I'm not at all trusting of big studios taking risks and trying new things so, as you say, the Skywalker's could be around for some time yet!

Having said that there are a number of other quotes from JJ and co that do counter the notion of this just being about the Skywalker clan. From Disney's perspective, bringing in completely new characters will allow them to expand the universe and thus create more films with more characters - and rightly or wrongly that seems to be there way these days. I just hope that the mythology gets the respect it deserves and creates worthwhile stories that aren't just designed first to make money.
