The cultures of the Earth looked a lot different in 1600 than they did in 2000. Ryan Coogler is busy with BP2 through 2022, but he'd be a nice choice for a Star Wars film.

See, that could have potential. But I'd want it to be pretty far back in the Jedi's history, even further than KOTOR. Like, ancient Jedi stuff.

In fact, there's some serious potential there, but you kind of have to scale back what regular Jedi are capable of, and have characters that specialize in one single aspect. For instance, think of all the Force powers we have- healing, telekinesis, telepathy, mind tricks, speed, jumping, skill with a lightsaber...

Then you can start delving into the "dark" powers the baddies start discovering- lightning, consuming of essence, midichlorian manipulation, immortality...

And then there are other things- wounds in the force, force dyads, prophecies, etc.

Now, I totally get this is almost entirely of what the Skywalker trilogy stands for, and I get that. But it's not terribly different from the order we see during the Clone Wars. If done well, this series could be a lot of fun but also serve as a really good prequel to the Skywalker saga as a whole- giving new meaning to how Anakin, Luke, and Rey brought balance to the Force by making it less of a tool for combat and more of a spiritual concept of guardianship. We already know that the Jedi Council during the Clone Wars was becoming corrupt, but who's to say that didn't begin far longer ago?

edit: While I do potentially like the idea of having separate Jedi treated almost like super heroes with different and varied powers, I don't see this idea going anywhere near as far as the MCU has gone. We're not gonna get Force Push Guy 3 the same year as The Lightning Twins and High Jumper: Civil War. It wouldn't necessarily need to be a trilogy, but maybe 4-5 movies (with a big 2-part event) with entourage casts would work.

Also, a big focus on the movies should be the proto-Jedi teaching each other how to tap into the force, becoming less like the specialized vigilantes and more like the holistic Jedi we know.

    WAKANDA FOREVER!!

Also true, but I feel like it's more a comparison for something like Rome. We can go there and see the aqueducts and colosseum, but I want to go far enough back that we see those places being built or in use. So...Rome in 2000 versus Rome in 1600 versus Rome in the first century (if my quick wiki check is correct)? At least in terms of atmosphere, specifically when it comes to places like Coruscant, Naboo, and Morriband.

Keep in mind that the hyperdrive or some form of FTL travel has existed for over 100k years in Legends & probably at least 5k in current canon so it shouldn't look to primitive. Aesthetically some things never change. The modern 6 shot revolver hasn't changed much since the 1870s. Better materials yes but still looks similar.

Another reference to the High Republic in new Star Wars (2020) comic series #2. It says that in that period Outer Rim was almost unexplored and dangerous, that the jedi/Republic built a huge space station in order to explore it...It is the third reference to the High Republic as far as I know, regarding Dooku Jedi Lost and The Rise of Kylo Ren

A lot is riding on Project Luminous. If you consider the Skywalker Saga a “sandbox” for playing in, this is like somebody bringing in a whole new sandbox. It has the potential to open up the galaxy to make it feel bigger and richer in history in ways the new films should have done it. But can Disney do it? I don’t have a real answer, and your guess is as good as mine. The pessimistic side of me senses Disney is pushing the “huge space station in order to explore the outer rim” (mentioned in cheewie’s previous comment) just so they can sell a new 500 piece Lego set. But the optimistic side of me thinks better. After all, Project Luminous is including some of the best writers in the Star Wars novels so far. And I would rather trust a writer to create a complex story than a filmmaker.

The question is whether LFL can do it. Disney has always given free rains to LFL when it comes to Star Wars. That said, LFL will absolutely want to appeal broadly and make the High Republic thing the next phase of not just Star Wars, but of pop culture the way the OT and PT did. Don't worry, this is gonna be new and different Star Wars! A true sandbox, as you say :)

Well Project Luminous is just books comics. So not a whole lot is really riding on this. Also keep your expectations in check about the project.

The mods here will likely rename this group when we learn more about the movies. Calling it Project Luminous is fine for now. My guess is we'll hear about the the director and the time period of the film before the publishing announcement. Lucasfilm will want to cash in on the rush of interest for that period.

    My current guess:
--February 24th = we learn about the general setting of "Phase 2 of Star Wars", with specific information on books (and a computer game?) set in this era

--August 27th-30th - Star Wars Celebration 2020 = we get the info on upcoming films, film series, and new TV shows connected to the Project Luminous stuff/setting.

This is a great thread, thanks to all.....prob my fave thread to visit right now for up to date info and great theories by those much smarter on SW than I.

I find the technology discussion reminiscent of my discussion about the same topic in Tolkien's universe. It is approximately 6,000 years from the beginning of Tolkien's First Age through the end of the Third Age in LOTR. Yet technology has not increased the slightest. Still use swords, horses, wagons, etc etc etc.

This could be true as well, but they'll probably start filming by the end of the year to make the 2022 release without rushing it like TROS. TLJ started filming almost 22 months before release. Also, if the books/comics are released this year they'll want to get people excited about buying them. Having some film period details will increase interest. The might keep everything a secret until August if all the books/comics start getting released in the Fall.

What could be interesting about the High Republic era is it could mirror western history and the discovery of the Americas. So instead of Old World/New World we have Core Worlds/Outer Rim. The Skywalker Saga has a blend of 19th and 20th century themes. The Western theme were the civilized/non-civilized places/persons still meet and clash. War themes mirroring early 20th century with imperialism and fascism. If it is four hundred years it would mirror western history's 1500s/1600s.

A key line I like in The Mandalorian is when Mando tells the young bounty hunter about the Tusken Raiders:"Tuskens think they're the locals. Everyone else is just trespassing." It is a reminder of the western theme of Tatooine and the clash of different cultures. The Tusken Raiders are the indigenous species to this Outer Rim. It would be interesting if in High Republic media the focus is on exploration/colonization period from the Core Worlds to the Outer Rim. Early settlements facing strange new planets and species. The focus could be on Jedi's exploring and helping new settlements or working as peacekeepers between colonist and indigenous species. Also, it would be a period of privateers and mercs, even more so than the original trilogy with hyperspace jumps taking much longer most Outer Rim plants would be considered lawless frontiers by the Core Worlds.

What if Obi-Wan is Project Luminous story? To me, that sounds like to good of an opportunity to not connect the two together in some way.

This rumored era of the "High Republic" holds potential for social criticism. We are currently living in times of greatest prosperity at the expense of health and sustainability. Maybe that will be covered too. The people of the 'High Republic' hadn't to fear poverty, misery and war. But this security can make it much easier to exploit people.

Okay, this probably isn't a topic Star Wars would show in a block buster movie, right?

I'm curious how Obi-Wan would connect to story from 500 years in the past.
Without getting too far off topic it's wise to point out every generation over the last 300 years beveled their prosperity was sustainable (see: Thomas Malthus). This is a pretty common theme in modern story telling. That's basically the plot of Avatar.

Just a quick correction. The original ziro.hu leak article put the Project Luminous timeline as "300-400 years BEFORE the Skywalker-saga", while Jason Ward talked about it being 400 years before the films. So, 500 years in the past (from Obi-Wan Kenobi's lifetime) is a bit too much :)

    Yes, I'm pedantic :p

I would like to see other faiths besides the Jedi and Sith on both the light side and the dark.
    --- Double Post Merged, Feb 9, 2020, Original Post Date: Feb 9, 2020 ---
The Galactic Republic sounds like the equivalent of Byzantium with the High Republic being akin to the Roman Imperium at the peak of its powers. Or like medieval Europe during the height of the Renaissance.

In terms of the list you have so kindly provided, myself I do not want to see a reliance on familiar characters to exploit nostalgia. The whole point of writing in this period is that you can create and explore new concepts without alienating fans of the previous instalments and as this period is so long in the past, there is a whole lot more freedom.

I want a series that instead of continually exploring the same time period, takes place over thousands of years like other science fiction epics. Similarly, if they finish with Project Luminous, I would like to see a series set hundreds of years after TROS in which there are whole different geopolitical entities and key figures from previous iterations are either half remembered ghosts occasionally referenced in history books pored over by bookish academics or mythologised as patron saints and prophets.
