MSW posted a spoiler from the new junior novel "Servants of the Empire #4: The Secret Academy."

    http://makingstarwars.net/2015/10/star-wars-the-force-awakens-general-hux-comes-from-a-long-line-of-imperialists/

Zare Leonis encounters "Commandant Berol Hux" who is an Imperial that wants to train Imperial soldiers from infancy. If this is implemented by the First Order, that would explain why Finn doesn't know his real name and only his number. It also means that General Hux probably comes from a line of Imperials.
I really like the idea of a character not knowing their real name or family.

Finn is Leonis' (younga) brotha from anotha motha.

Seriously though, if Finn was taken from his family by force, potentially even orphaned by the First Order, it's entirely possible that Finn could be Leonis' son.
We just don't know what happened with Leonis (yet).

I guess no one has really been reading about poor Zare...

I do like the way Finn and Leonis sound together. I've had a hunch about Finn and Zare since he was introduced on Rebels.

I've thought that Finn was Zare's son ever since he popped up on Rebels. But maybe Finn was taken at birth and doesn't know? It's likely the Empire kill Zare for his treason (maybe later in his life) and they take Finn as a consolation prize, to raise him up as a Child of the Empire

I could see a scenario where an older Zare is discovered to be a secret rebel, is killed or imprisoned, and his infant son is taken by the Empire or an Imperial remnant.

Great minds think alike. I'm thinking that the Finn/Zare Leonis connection is the link between The Force Awakens & Rebels. It's likely why his last name has been withheld, as to give a tip of the cap to the fans of Rebels.

It's kind of strange that we've essentially missed out on an entire generation of characters, that will be covered in the novels and other media away from the new trilogy - Alicia Beck, Commander Hux, The Dameron's in Shattered Empire, etc. It all seems to me that they are using the new story canon to establish the parental lineage of our "new generation" heroes and villains.

The only bad thing about that is, you have a ton of new characters to introduce and to kill off, in the interim timeline. And I'm seeing that as becoming a bit redundant as we continue forward. Also, maybe Alicia Beck will be a deviation from this. Maybe she isn't one of the parents of Captain Phasma, but actually is Captain Phasma herself. I guess we'll see.

I've posted in a different forum topic that I think Luke and maybe Mara Jade(or a new Star Wars character) had 2 young twins that Snoke snaps up in a sneak attack on Luke's new Jedi Temple(maybe Yavin 4).
It might explain why Luke is a recluse and how Hux/Plasma become First Order leaders.

I'd add that be ready for a climax or 3rd act reveal(surprise) that Darth Plaguis is really behind all the events.

I said it once, and I will say it again... Everything about Zare Leonis feels tacked onto the show last-minute.

Even in his original episode his role could have been filled by another character in the plot, or even just cut out all together.

I think they added Zare at the request of the Story Group to add backstory for Finn.

Finn could be a Leonis despite Zare being at the time against the empire. But Zare aired before we learned Finns name.

No not at all just saying that the only point of comparison for the names was when Finn's name was revealed. People seemed to have it reversed.

I've also thought Finn would be related to Zare Leonis ever since the character was introduced in Rebels, especially since Zare joined the Empire to look for his sister, who was taken by them and is at least implied to be force sensitive. A couple of questions though: First, when was Boyega cast in relation to when Zare Leonis was developed and/or shown on Rebels? Finn could have been black or white, based on who was up for the part with Boyega, so if they molded the Leonis character after that casting decision it certainly supports the theory. If not, and Leonis pre-dated Boyega, there is a hole in it.

Second, pardon my ignorance, but who is Alicia Beck?

Given Hux's infancy indoctrination program, and the fact that Leonis' force-sensitive sister was already in custody, and Finn's alleged force-sensitivity, I'd say it's more likely that Finn is Leonis' nephew rather than son. In other words, my guess is that Leonis' sister is effectively brain-washed and raised a loyal adherent to the empire, who then willingly gives up her offspring (FN-2187) to its cause.

I had the same question -- were the episodes with Leonis already in production before Boyega was cast? If so it's unlikely the two are related, since Leonis looks nothing like Jesse Plemons (considered for the role of Finn). Here's the thing though: even if it's just a coincidence that Lucasfilm simultaneously introduced two dissenting young stormtrooper characters who also happen to both be black and speak with American accents, with no direct relation intended, they can always retcon and make a lineage later (cf. Leia becomes Luke's sister in ROTJ but clearly was not conceived as such in ANH or ESB).

At least this could confirm Hux isn't Luke's son, well if they EU and say that Mara Jade was Luke's love interest at some point and gave birth to Hux and put him in the imperial academy...

Not following you. Can you elaborate? What does the name Finn have to do with the name Zare Leonis? It is pretty clear now that "Finn" is taken from his id number.
    --- Double Post Merged, Oct 8, 2015, Original Post Date: Oct 8, 2015 ---
I actually think Lucas decided that she was Luke's sister during the production of ESB and edited it to reflect that by taking out the longer kiss. You can also trace the "seeds" of the idea that she is related to Luke through the old drafts of ANH. In the 2nd Draft Luke's brother, Deak, had her role of getting captured in the beginning, sending a message through R2 to Luke, and being rescued from the Death Star. Leia was Luke's cousin (daughter of Owen and Beru) in the same draft. But your point remains and I digress.

Sam Witwer also said he was up for the role of Finn before they "changed the parameters" of the character and decided to make him a black character. It seems from his comments like they made the decision to make him black before they cast Boyega, though they were testing multiple races.

There was a take of a longer kiss??? After consulting my droid database of human intimacy, the kiss in ESB is not what I would classify as a "short" kiss, especially followed as it is by Luke's gesture of satisfied gloating. If Lucas was already planning to reveal Leia as Luke's sister, this is a pretty daring depiction of incestual attraction for somebody who viewed the movies as advertisements for his toy line.

Except that we know via interviews the "Leia is Luke's sister" plot device was inserted into the ROTJ writing process as a way of Vader goading Luke to the dark side ("if you will not turn then perhaps she will"). To your point, there may have been seeds of this in the early ANH drafts, but there's no evidence the characters of Luke and Leia were conceived as siblings during the filming of ANH or ESB, and there's also no hint of it on screen (unless you count their telepathic communication as Luke dangles below Cloud City, but Leia doesn't have to be force sensitive or a direct relative to receive telepathic communication from a skilled force user). Yoda's line "No, there is another" was a reference to a sibling we had not yet met. Luke was supposed to search for her in the sequel to ESB but I can't remember why that story line was dropped.

It's also possible I'm confusing things I read in Rinzler's definitive "Making of" books with bs I read online. My apologies if this is the case.

With regard to Witwer's comments, this is interesting. But it's still unclear if they "changed the parameters" after narrowing in on Boyega or if this is something that JJ and Kasdan decided after they scrapped the Arendt draft, and it's also unclear how this lines up chronologically with the conception of Leonis. We may have to wait for Rinzler's "Making of the Force Awakens" to know the exact chronology of cross-platform character development.

FInn is the nephew of the offspring that was adopted by the illicit love child born of Dexter jettster and sly snootles.

There doesn't have to be links to every character ..The force and history is enough of a link..I hope the sequel doesn't over do it trying to link characters .just let a story flow
