In the RotJ Special Edition we saw an unchanged Jedi Temple during the Victory Celebrations. But in Tarkin and the new Star Wars Comics the Jedi Temple was deconstructed and changed into the Imperial Palace. What happened? Could it be that these scenes from the movie aren't canon anymore?

I'm not sure, actually. If what has been said is true, the Celebration on Coruscant,Naboo and Tatooine shouldn't have happened either because the war continued. I guess we have to wait and see. :)

But the celebrations were mentioned in the News about Star Wars Aftermath.

Interesting... I'm thinking this is a canon mix-up that'll have to be addressed, provided enough people ask. I can see them having fewer slips going forward, but it's understandable when relating to the changes made in the 90s.

Technically they could have happened, in fact in Naboo and Tatooine they might've not really had any Imperial garrison at the time. We never saw any stormtroopers on Tatooine in RotJ for instance. So maybe there were no stormtroopers there to keep them in line. Coruscant is different. I could see the celebrations going on like we see in the movie, then quickly getting squashed by Imperial generals. :D

Being that the celebrations were short and as displayed on screen as well. They could have been quelled shortly after they happened. I mean the rebels had a victory celebration at the end of episode 4 and they didn't seem to worried about imperial retribution. So it is just a celebration for a victory and nothing more. Perhaps the imperials after finding out about the death of the emperor may have been in a state of shock and caused massive disorganization amongst the rank and file and gave way for some uprisings that were happening after the battle.

I didn't read tarkin. Did they specify that it was torn down or that t was just repurposed?

Maybe he rebuilt it in the shape of the Jedi temple as a big FU to his fallen enemies. :)

It was described as essentially a new building that hasn't much in common with the jedi temple architecturewise.

Well it is the symbol the jedi order so rebuilding it proves they always keep coming back.

I was mostly just joking. Perhaps it is a sign that the new story group doesn't consider the special editions canon? Maybe there's a yet to be told story about a business man on Coruscant who builds a replica jedi temple for a medieval times style Jedi dinner theater show so the loyal imperial citizens can cheer as they watch reenactments of the Order 66 saga. Who knows?

If there comes a time when we are supposed to consider a novel to outrank any element of the six movies then the world has truly gone mad...
It's like Nike trying to tell me my T-shirt is more a part of me than my own kidneys, just so they can sell more T-shirts.

I like the idea with the imperial palace, but agree with that. The only exception should be the prequels... :) ;-p

I don't know about the comics, but here's what James Luceno had to say in a recent interview:

    source - http://boards.theforce.net/threads/...al-palace-lucasfilm-story-group-and.50029488/

It's kind of hard to parse this sentence, but what I'm getting from it is that the inside was redone but the exterior looks the same. Does the comic show something different?

Well you don't see the inside of the temple you just see the cheering and the statue of the Emperor coming down.

The other likely hood is the writer of Tarkin wrote something that passed the story group and no one thought that the few seconds of time you see in ROTJ would cause a stink.

When i first saw the special edition of RotJ in 1997, i thought the giant building in the Coruscant Celebration was the imperial palace!
