    First comes the day
    Then comes the night.
    After the darkness
    Shines through the light.
    The difference, they say,
    Is only made right
    By the resolving of gray
Through refined Jedi sight.“―Journal of the Whills, 7:477

From the novelization of The Force Awakens

It appears the prophecy came true in The Last Jedi: or didn't it?

I don't think so. Once we've seen Episode IX it should be clearer, but as of right now I would say no.

I think parts of it have come true, but we need to wait until Ep IX to see it's completion.

"First Comes the day" - I believe this is the events of The Force Awakens
"The Comes the night" - The events of The Last Jedi

The next two lines have a double meaning, and are supposed to represent both of our protagonist.

    "After the darkness
    Shines through the light"

On one hand it means Kylo, who the darkness over took, "shining" through the light. It makes it clear these events happen before the events of the trilogy, "after." On the other hand it means Rey, who is the light after the darkness, the spark of hope for the galaxy. This interpretation doesn't have clear time frame.

    "The difference they say
    Is only made right."

These two lines back up my dual meaning theory. There's a difference between them. Also there is a difference between Rey, and Kylo. There is a difference between the Light and the Dark sides. All of these things need to be made right.

    "Through the resolving of Gray
    And refined Jedi sight."

These last two lines don't yet have context, and I expect they describe the events of Ep IX. They can be taken quite literally.

I want some grey jedi up in this!

Not for the force to become balanced and no more dark or light, but a more cohesive centre.

Highly doubt any of that was even considered during the writing process for TLJ. They're just some old books that aren't worth reading, according to Yoda in this movie. Doubt we'll be exploring the mythos of the Jedi and the Force in episode IX either.

Maybe some old bearded guy will turn up (not Luke or Obiwan, a stranger), mumble a few words and nod sagely, then disappear.

Kylo and Rey will be too confused to fight, and just stare at eachother.

He will be Old Man Force, force santa!

That line from Yoda referred to luke, not to the actual contents. In any case there was nothing in that library that "Rey doesn't already posess". When the novelization was written and completed Johnson was already preparing to shoot VIII. I think it is very unconvincing when people claim that RJ didn't pay any attention to it. It also seems rather unconvincing to claim that the author didn't have a treatment for Episode VIII on hand when he wrote the novelization for VIII.

Especially when you consider there is a story group and the writer(s), in this case Johnson, are meeting with them. To think that he just totally ignored the novelization is insane.
