I believe it was in supplementary material...as I've said before, the problem with the sequel trilogy is that far too much info was in books, visual guides and comics. I love reading, but a lot of people either can't afford, or can't be bothered, to read tie in books. I remember Elijah Wood making a light hearted comment about it on social media.

Since it was so obvious, it really makes one wonder why Rey being Luke's daughter was the Number One fan theory following the movie's premeire.

Was it thought? I can only speak for what was going on here, but after TFA was released most people thought she wasn't his daughter. It does seem though that outcome and being a lost Leia child was the outcome people were the most emotionally tied to before and after TLJ was released.
Heck, I basically called the freak out a few months before TLJ was released:
That's pretty much how it played out online.

The mere fact that The Cantina had a long-running discussion thread (including a poll) on the subject proves my point. I find it interesting that even here on a hard-core Star Wars fan site, there was a pretty decent split between the fans polled who though she was versus those who thought she wasn't. If all Star Wars fans who went to the theatres in droves to watch TLJ could have somehow been polled, my bet is that the majority expected to learn Rey was a Skywalker and that Luke was her father.

And now - years after the film's release - we're supposed to believe that this 'Luke is Rey's father' business was manufactured by the TLJ Bashers as a way of justifying their hatred.

Once again, you fans who love this movie are welcome to keep on loving it to your heart's content. But you don't get to dismiss as after-the-fact fabrications, the very valid reasons why other fans dislike the film so much -- which set off a Civil War among the fandom.

No one is arguing that Rey's origin wasn't a mystery. So no, that doesn't prove your point that most people thought she was Luke's daughter.
Not sure what you mean. Who is we? My quote above was from before the film was released. Are you disagreeing that people who were heavily invested in the LukeRey theory weren't disappointed? You've already admitted you were.
What is being dismissed? There's no civil war. Star Wars is a huge IP with people who are very vocal about their opinions. That's all fine as long as people are respectful about it.

It doesn't even matter if it was a majority of SW fans or not. The point is that this widespread belief didn't happen by accident. If this was allegedly the direction the trilogy was taking from Day One, JJ sure messed it up with his teases.

Okie dokie, you're certainly entitled to your opinion.

But it would be interesting if we could have seen the state of the franchise today IF NOT for The Mandalorian coming on the scene on the heels of TROS which caused a disillusioned fanbase to fall in love with Star Wars again.

Of course, but I've asked you some direct questions and if you're going to reply it would be nice if you would address them. I'm not really interested in discussing nebulous ideas about fandom. Star Was isn't in need of saving. It never has... it'll be around long after we're both no longer around to enjoy it.

    Okay. I said the following:
You followed up with these questions:
My answer: The Star Wars fans who disliked TLJ and JJ's effort to course-correct in TROS. Yes, we exist!!! :)

Apparently you don't spend much time on social media. YouTube is full of videos on the so-called SW civil war. The number of videos blasting TLJ, Rian Johnson, and Kathleen Kennedy would fill a library.

And there's more. There was also the whole embarrassing social media controversy that took place when YouTube personality 'Star Wars Theory' (who has a SW site with over 3 million subscribers) posted an emotional video of himself reacting to “The Mandalorian” Season 2 finale. A twitter post came out showing screenshots of SWT crying along with the chiding comment: "emotions are not to be shared."

Turns out the tweet poster was a prominant Lucasfilm employee -- Pablo Hidalgo -- who, shortly after he was 'outted,' deleted the tweet and apologized. But the damage had been done. This incident led to a whole new wave of Kathleen Kennedy hatred on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube with comments like "Why in the world would a Lucasfilm employee chastize A HUGE STAR WARS FAN ? Hmmm...maybe it was because he had serious issues with TLJ.

Jon Favreau has played the good soldier and has gone out of his way to praise KK at every opportunity. But the Hidalgo incident made it crystal clear that there are Kathleen Kennedy staffers inside Lucasfilm who were upset with the reaction to TLJ and are jealous of Favreau and Filoni's success and enthusiastic fan support. And while Kennedy has survived the storm, recent actions have made it obvious that Disney's CEO is turning to Favreau, not Kennedy, for advice moving forward.

The desire to be ahead of the curve. Wishful thinking. Notions of ownership of the narrative.

Well Darth, as it goes entirely without saying (but I'll state the obvious anyway): You can't please everyone all of the time.

This "Fan Civil War" thing that you speak of is largely only in the minds of those (like yourself) that are "upset" that this movie (or series thereof) didn't live up to the individual "fan expectation"....and this very thing is reminiscent of the screaming that took place after the PT, and is the same old rerun.

As a guy that saw the OT in theaters, there were aspects of the PT that (to me) were hokey and contrived, but I nevertheless got the backstory, and so I was satisfied, as with this ST, despite the fact that it didn't end the way I wanted it to....it's "Whatever", but I (again) got the story.

Remember; These stories aren't yours or mine...they came from someone else.

You'd better believe that there are parts of the ST that were "groan-worthy", and that I hated, but as for the screechers that want everyone to know how dissatisfied they were....I just shake my head, because none of it will change a thing. It's over and done with...

Now, I see you here rewinding to a lot of the sewage that bubbled up during and after the ST, and I see you relaying scenarios that took place largely behind the scenes, and that you only know about due to what got aired on social media, and in articles....and you use words like "Obvious", which are only obvious to you, because it's speculative, based on what you think, and honestly...people are over it...we had those arguments here before, for years, and you know what changed?? Nothing...

You are passing off some of your "obvious" thoughts as irrefutable facts that cannot be denied, and to me, some of those "facts" are purely based on subjectivity, because you're upset with "something" and you want the masses to know it...we heard you...got it. [Thumbs up]

    So anyway, moving on.....

@Trevor pretty much says it better than me. It's important to remember... social media isn't real life. I feel like I say this a lot, but people need to be aware that what's on YouTube/Twitter isn't representative of the general public. The internet is great at finding people who share your opinion. It's great at giving a voice to smaller groups. If you look at the demographics of Twitter/YouTube it's not even close to the general public. On an anecdotal level almost all the Star Wars fans I know outside the internet aren't consuming Star Wars online like I am and most of them couldn't name the person who directed The Last Jedi. They watch every movie and they like them or they don't, but they always come back.

Nonetheless there is a significant group of each. Those who love these movies, those who hates them and those who just tolerate them. And people might be in different groups when it comes to different movies.
But let's not try to think that what I think about that movie is what is right. Let's respect that someone doesn't like what I like and someone else likes what I don't like. And let's all do this in a civilized and friendly manner.

I expected this to be the kind of responses I'd receive. Why not simply acknowledge -- as @Meister Yoda does -- that it was a polarizing film? My very first public comment on this film was simply to do just that -- and I was informed by posters here that it was all in my head. Oooooooooookay.

I love the Favreau-Filoni SW shows yet some folks have had various issues with them, particularly the early Boba Fett episodes. But as a big fan, I've acknowledged their concerns and discussed them. And here? I'm told a SW "Civil War" doesn't exist..."social media isn't representative"...and any criticisms are a "vocal minority" because there really hasn't been any perceivable fan fallout following the film. I'm told "I" am the one who is "being subjective" when I state these --- dare I say it? --- facts about the response Johnson's film has received.

If I've stepped on some toes here with "my anti-TLJ" commentary, don't take it personally. I came here as a relative board newbie simply to express my own opinions about the impact of the film for the first time. It was never my intent to try to change your minds about the film. But by the same token, you don't get to create your own reality by dismissing the polarizing effect the film had on the fanbase by ignoring it ever happened.

It's a lot less dramatic than that. It's just people pushing back on your opinions. It happens.

its okay to like something someone else dislikes and all of that in return. I would love a Star Wars Pooh episode. I mean if have Legos why not Pooh? Kylo and big papa palps could be Heffalumps.

That's expected. What I'm objecting to is the OB1-like mind-control wave of "TLJ is great; it never created a Civil War among the fanbase."

When you ignore reality, what's to discuss?

The entire ST was polarizing...nobody disputes that...I certainly don't.

But....we all know what those "facts" are....opinions from other people....and you're using them to bolster your own opinion about why that movie was garbage in your world...subjectivity.

You're not stepping on ANY toes here...we get that you hated it...a lot of people did...this entire thing just seems a little passive-aggressively confrontational based on what someone loathes vs those that accepted it for what it is...and even isn't.

And you don't get to TELL people what their reality should be...it's a two way street.

Here it really doesn't exist, because we've all largely (except this here and now) have gotten past why people liked it all or hated it all, and for the most part can at least understand WHY we all have our opinions on the matter without standing at every intersection telling everyone that walks past (and will listen) projecting what they they should or shouldn't be loving or hating...about anything, really.

It wasn't "great"...at all. That "Civil War" that you speak of only ACTUALLY exists (or existed) with a minority of the lovers and the haters. Everyone else agreed to disagree from the beginning...frankly.

This is where you get me wrong...I'm not arguing with you, as I have AGREED that it was polarizing, and I wont "argue" with you on that matter...at all.

I'm merely pointing out that you seem to be absolutely MIRED in your hatred for this movie, and you're pointing it out to everyone how much you hated it, and even seem to be strangely abrasive with those that seem to not have your same opinion.

Hated it, or loved it...far out, but why confront those on the other side of the fence whose opinions differ...what's the achievement?

If you go back and review my posts, I think you'll discover that I haven't been talking about HOW MUCH I hated it. I've been pointing out the reasons WHY I hate it. If this thread was all about how much you loved it or how much I hated it, what's to discuss? This is, after all, a discussion board.

Strangely abrasive? How so? You may be too young to remember the Popeye cartoons, but as he used to say, "I yam what I yam." My posts are intended to stimulate a good discussion, period.

Unless something is said about TLJ or TROS that I have an opinion worth sharing, I'll try to steer clear in the future because I prefer to talk about the stuff I love, like the OTs and the Fav-roni Star Wars Universe.
