The Last Jedi took each individual character & gave them massive personal growth in my opinion, & while it may seem we're ending where we started, Episode IX has the potential to show each individual character vastly changed & fulfilled in their new role. The Jedi are without a Grandmaster, the First Order are without a Supreme Leader, & the Resistance is without its Generals & Admirals. Our heroes are set up to take the mantle of leadership, & I cannot wait to see where they go.

    - Rey grows tremendously. She learns what the Force is. She is tempted by the Dark Side & refuses it on multiple occasions. She has encountered pure evil & survived. But what is more, she learns of her true heritage, & learns to accept it. She acknowledges that anyone can be anything, & she has the potential to realize her destiny to rebuild the Jedi Order. I'm so excited to see what she does as a Master. Will she rebuild the Order? Will she have padawans? Will she start a temple? What knowledge will she deem from the sacred Jedi texts, & how will she learn from the mistakes of those that came before?

    - Poe grows tremendously. He learns that leadership takes a steady hand. It takes mutual respect & communication. It takes acknowledging the chain of command. He learns about sacrifice. I am so excited to see where he goes as a leader in the Resistance with the lessons he's learned from failure, the greatest teacher. How will he learn from his mistakes to lead the Resistance after the deaths of its Admirals and Generals? Assuming Leia dies by the time IX takes place, Poe is the highest ranking member of the Resistance (After Admiral Ackbar's death it was Holdo, a Vice Admiral, one rank above Commander in Naval rank structure)

    - Finn grows tremendously. He starts the film questioning his place in the war. He attempts to leave the Resistance to save Rey. By the end of the film he confronts The First Order & establishes himself as Rebel Scum. He attempts to sacrifice himself for a cause he previously didn't believe in. He has become a true hero of the Resistance, & I'm so excited to see where he takes that role. The Resistance needs leaders now more than ever, & no one can share the message of stopping the First Order like Finn can, it is rumored in a deleted scene that he attempts to recruit Stormtroopers to the Resistance on the Supremacy.

    - Ben/Kylo grows tremendously, but also degrades. He goes down Vader's path & liberates himself from his Master, but not for altruism toward one he loves but instead to establish himself as the Supreme Leader, to gain power for himself. He sets himself as the master of the Dark Side, & the leader of the First Order. He confronts his pain & betrayal by Luke, & it tears him apart. By the end of the film we have a more disheveled Kylo than we had before, but with more power & influence. It appears he is solidly consumed by the Dark Side, & I am so excited to see where he drives the plot as the main antagonist. Will the Knights of Ren make an appearance as his acolytes of the Dark Side? Will they fight alongside him? Will the First Order gain power or lose it?

    - Luke grows tremendously. He goes from a broken man cut off from the Force to realizing his mistakes & confronting them. He sees himself in Rey & Kylo. He becomes the Masters he idolized, & follows in their footsteps to become one with the Force. Looking into the binary sunset, realizing himself once again. His story is likely over, but I am excited to see how he helps Rey as she rebuilds the Jedi.

Assuming there is some time between Episodes VIII & IX, I cannot wait to see where our characters are in their new roles & how they take up the mantle of leadership in the vacuum that RJ & VIII have created. When R2 shows Luke the hologram of Leia from ANH he says "that was cheap" & maybe it is cheap to play to our nostalgia. VIII does away with the old & brings in the new, as Kylo says. Episode VIII gives us a conduit to escape from the old storylines of Star Wars & acts as a catalyst to usher in the new age of heroes, with new stories, new adventures, and A New Order.

EDIT: People are really upset that TLJ does away with our old connections, but in my opinion they are ignoring the possibility of the new heroes potential.

I can't wait to see what happens next. How will Rey use the legend of Luke Skywalker to help rebuild the Jedi Order? What will Finn's next step be? How do you solve a problem like Leia? Will Poe now be the head of the Rebels? Can Kylo Ren really lead the First Order?

I'm with you! I'm scared about what comes next. And I've also learned that when I see really crazy leaks online that I should believe them. I honestly thought people were making up crap and trolling when I read about Leia flying in space, force projection Luke and milking a space cow. Lesson learned.

The fact that both Han and Luke left the galaxy a substantially worse place than they found it is unacceptable, honestly. I don't think I should have to explain why. The entire sequel trilogy has turned into Denning vs. Traviss redux only with J.J. and Rian.

The galaxy was an awful place at the end of Episodes 2, 3, 4, & 5, & only starts to rebuild after Episode 6. Why would the status of the galaxy before the finale lead to a negative review? The tension of the galaxy is why I am excited for Episode IX.

Yeah, except the prequel trilogy is about the downfall of the Republic and the original trilogy is about the Galactic Civil War so that's expected. It's the sequel trilogy that's the tacked-on rehash of the Galactic Civil War only this time with even less developed politics and a more blasted-up sense of scale.

Character developement is one thing sure but there is no overarching story that has been built up. IX could take place 10 years after TLJ or only one day after. There's no pressing issue, nothing that needs to be found or destroyed. This blank canvas setup is what I expect episodic franchises to have like Indiana Jones or James Bond but not Star Wars. Star Wars has always been about building up a story and a blank canvas is not what I wanted to see that quickly given that already TFA had pretty much all the freedom JJ wanted.

I have the feelign that they are going with a Kylo vs Rey scenario because really, everyone else is gone. But I am not too excited about it. I have already seen Kylo vs Rey and I have seen Kylo and Rey fighting back to back too. The feeling I have after TLJ doesn't even come close to the "Sh*t's about to go down soon" vibe that seeing the endcredits of "LotR: The Two Towers" or "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" caused. I am way more excited for the Han Solo movie and Rians new-new trilogy. TLJ felt like a finale in how little it explained about TFA and how it tied up/killed off many loose storylines. I will walk into IX with the expectations of watching a filler episode of my favourite show. If you'Ve watched "Breaking Bad: Season 4" than you have seen the death of Gustavo Fring and you can probably remember this feeling of "Well, what now?". This is how I fell about IX!

Strangely, Episode 8 sort of... for now... lower my craving for 9.

But wait! I loved TLJ... for me, it's one of my favorite Star Wars movie and probably there on top of my favorite from 2017 with Blade Runner 2049.

But, Star Wars could end now and I would be satisfied.

Maybe because I am one that think the arc of one particular classic character was sooo beautifully closed, I feel at peace.

I just don't see it, this is a saga of good vs evil and the 2 main antagonist remaining are a complete joke. The most logical outcome here is that the first order collapses alone in a few months after episode 8. No need to train new jedi or grow the resistance. Unless Snoke somehow survived this trilogy is already over.

    A joke?
    Damn.
We have the same situation fron ESB but reversed.

    Rey is a nobody.
Ren actually turned against the big Sith monster!

Aren't you curious to see how this trilogy concludes while playing the cards differently than what you are used to?

It's different ingredients and I am curious to see where all of this is going to end.

    A Joke!

    blast!

    Sorry, I don't get it.

Yes a joke, Kylo is a great complex character and Adam Driver is a superb actor but do you seriously see Kylo as someone who could lead an empire? He doesn't seem to have any of the qualities required to do that, he is an unstable, impulsive individual with no other qualifications other than being strong in the force. To be honest neither did Vader and his leadership skills seemed leagues above Kylo.
On top of that he has this ridiculous dynamic going on with Hux (they seem like two spoiled childs fighting) that will probably blow up at any second.
The Empire started to collapse soon after the emperor's death and they had many great leaders, if Hux is the best example of leadership in the FO then they are blasted.
I'm not sure what's left to be curious about, I think it's pretty telegraphed, the resistance wins and Rey defeats Kylo, whether he redeems before dying or not is up to a coin toss.

This is like the Dark Ages, after the fall of the Roman Empire. The big heroes are fast fading. The bad guys aren't as bad and the good guys aren't as good, and they're squabbling over remnants of what used to be.
