So "The Last Jedi" has been released as the official title for Star Wars Vlll. A new rumor has spread that the title in German reads as "Der Letzte Jedi." Now I know, I should get my eyes checked but I feel that that translation has a lot to do with Lucasfilm's choice. To me it looks an awful lot like Let the Jedi Die. Which makes me think that The Title, Red Outline, and German Translation is no coincidence. So what do you guys think? I'm going to jump in later and provide some evidence for both sides.

    Have Fun!

Not much to comment on that (I genuinely think trying to keep the title as close to a certain level as possible when translating has been attempted, but is almost impossible to get universally without changing the title of the film across various territories).

Worth mentioning also that in France it is called Le Dernier Jedi, which is singular (implying that, yes, it is only in reference to Luke; but again, I think my previous bracketed point could explain this).

No, it just a very literal translation. However, the title suggests that Jedi is masculine singular (i.e., "der"). If plural or feminine, it would have been "die".

I am always skeptical when trying to read gender into a translation from English to some other language. Maybe "Jedi" is one of those words explained by my friend Navin Johnson in The Jerk:

Navin R. Johnson: These hoodlums are dangerous. I think we oughta get out of here before she sees us.
    Marie: She?
    Navin R. Johnson: What?
    Marie: You said she.
Navin R. Johnson: No! No! I always call a gang "she". It's like when you call a boat "she", or a hurricane "she".
    Marie: Or a girl?
Navin R. Johnson: Or a girl, you can call a girl she, that's just one of the many things you can call she.

Who knows, maybe we will hear the Knights of Ren referred to as "she."

Not sure how it will be the translation in portuguese. O Último jedi, singular or Os Últimos Jedi, plural. Need to wait.

Also, German translations of film titles are known not to be true to the word at times.

I think the German translation will be:
Der Letzte Jedi-Ritter (plural: Die Letzten Jedi-Ritter) or Der Letzte der Jedi

We are dealing here with the translation, i.e. interpretation of the movie's title by local disney marketing bureaus.

I believe that would have been a better, and more fitting with tradition, Star Wars Skywalker Saga Episode title.

I agree, and it may once have been the actual title, but its too similar to Return of The Jedi. ;)

I've no idea what point you're trying to communicate? Let the jedi die?

If it's about singular vs. plural, I'm sure the translators will get the proper tips from oben in terms of which one's the correct one - though it could get tricky if it's supposed to be ambiguous before you finish the movie, I suppose.

If it's plural it'll probably be "Die letzten Jedi-Ritter" - because "Die letzten Jedi" might sound awkward, though it also might not.

But I mean "last" isn't really ambiguous or difficult to translate into any language, you know.

    EDIT:
Might also get awkward, UND SEXISTISCH, if it's supposed to be Rey lol

"Die letzte Jedi-Ritterin", sounds kinda dumb, but then also kinda hot - I guess we'll see eh

Thanks for getting the thread back on track.

So has the title not been officially translated yet? If "Jedi" is intentionally vague as to its number, how might they disguise that in other languages?

At least in German it's impossible.
Can't possibly believe it will be something else but masculin and singular.
Out of all the alternatives that one gives away the least.
