I didn't hate TLJ. I also didn't think it was great by any means. It was just ok. But after seeing all the backlash from TFA about how it stole from ANH, can someone explain to me how this movie is any different? But instead of stealing from ANH it just copied sequences from Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I'm sure there's more but these are a few very big points in the plot that are obviously copied straight from those two movies. I'll admit TFA copied it more in order than TLJ but TLJ just copied scenes and put them in a different order to make it seem different. So why are people acting like this is so new and refreshing?

    - Apprentice goes to find master for training
    - Apprentice leaves before finishing training
    - Jedi gives herself up to dark side try and turn someone to the light
    - Dark side apprentice betrays master
    - Last ditch effort to protect base against Walkers in snow (in this case salt that looks like snow)
    - Narrow escape from fallen base in millennium falcon

    Subversions my man. Subversions.

Or if you're a Star Wars guru, The Ring Theory.

Or for layman's terms, just go back to George Lucas old saying: "It's like poetry, it rhymes."

The new things that people are referring to have little to do with the plot. I mean obviously the biggest part of the plot, a chase scene in space where the ships are going max speed but it looks slow because it's space, is new but I don't think people really care about that anyways.

That’s How Star Wars Works, It’s Supposed To Be Similar To The Originals, I Saw These Simiularities But I Still Loved The Film:

-Main Character Goes To A Planet To Become A Jedi

-Teacher Is Reluctant To Train The Student But Eventually Comes Around

-Characters Are Tricked Into A Trap (DJ VS Lando)

Why is that how star wars works? Who said it's supposed to follow so closely to the originals? It was a choice it was never mandatory.
Star Wars is much larger than that, the prequels were very different and so where the countless novels, video games and comics...

If you are talking about ring theory I think it's hardly the same as the rip off being done with the ST.

I call bs. I it was different, you still complained. What it really is if it didn't have Darth Palguies, Rey wasn't a Solo or Skywlaker, there wasn't a double bladed yellow lightsaber, Mara Jade wasn't in it, Luke didn't act like an uber sexy beast god of thunder pulling down planets with his toes, it wasn't thrawn, it wasn't more twins, it wasn't the EU, it wasn't KOTOR,...

If it's the same it gets blasted. If it's different like it was in TLJ and it was it gets blasted. The prequels weren't nothing new by any means either.

    This. All this.

A lot of the plot elements come from other SW movies, as noted. But that's Star Wars. It functions lime myth: you take familiar tropes and arrange them in new ways, with new meanings for the story, to create something fresh.

So a shallow, plot-only reading might find this movie unoriginal. But look at the character development. Look at the themes. Look at the place some of these familiar plot points fall, and how their new placement changes everything. Those things show a Star Wars movie like we've never seen.

I didn't complain about RO, it was a story I wasn't even interested in, it wasn't the EU, heck I stole the death star plans myself as Kyle Katarn, but I thoroughly enjoyed it since it was a well written movie and consistent with the saga. We don't complain because we like to complain it's just we are really disappointed.

PS: Plagueis is still behind everything, you will see...

The chase scene in space isn't really new. It's like the Falcon chase scene from ESB, only they took out the asteroids and replaced them with boredom....

Or, perhaps the fact that TLJ was able to echo some of the themes from TESB and ROTJ, yet still come across as a unique, intriguing film is part of the movie’s genius....

How many Trilogies can you keep doing this where it finally gets stale? This Trilogy had to change things up and sadly it didn't in that respect. The only things they are doing different is setting certain things up for our expectations and then TLJ pulled the rug out from under us for shock value.

Dude, you realize that you don't need to chime in with your sarcasm in every thread? I get that you're annoyed with fans who don't like it as you have pretty much called out anyone in every thread. But if you want interesting threads, then make some here at the Cantina and you'll probably get the debate you want. ;):)

This is the first thread I've seen about TLJ being a re-hash...also if you don't have anything interesting to add to the thread then don't waste your time commenting.

@Snoke33 I see, we had some very similar thoughts about the new movie. In general, I like TLJ more than TFA (I really disliked this movie), but Star Wars has more potential. The first time I saw TFA I was like "What exactly is THAT? How about make a movie about the Thrawn Trilogy?"

The best thing about TLJ was Yoda. (yoda)It was really nice to see one of my favorite characters on screen again.

The worst thing was the same like in TFA... It is named Kylo Ren... Don't judge me too hard, but I don't like him. Vader or even Maul were better antagonists. I hope Disney isn't going to ruin Star Wars totally.

And I have to admit that the OT stormies and X-Wings have a better design than the new ones.(x-wing)
