Rian Johnson's idea of originality is to add red to everything and to make Luke a loser. We should all be paid millions for this kind of imagination.

George borrowed bits and pieces from all the things he loved in order to build his Star Wars. The concern of a lot of fans (not unduly) is whether these new creators are instead just borrowing from Star Wars itself to build their Star Wars. Like a snake devouring its own tail.

The originality of Star Wars was never rated on its individual components. It was that no one had ever thought, or managed, to put them together that way before. That’s what was so innovative at the time. That’s what some believe is lacking now.

Thank you, I thought so too. Just trying to conserve words, and I thought this sums up the film rather accurately. This summary applies nicely to TFA as well.

The problem with the "is fast but looks slow" is the way that the Super Leia thing was handled. She should be left in the stardust by that ship, but she just slowly floats herself back an unrealistically short distance after a little time has transpired.

Apparently Leia's unconscious body kept up with the moving ship before she even started flying!

    Rian Johnson is a hack.

The problem with originality is that it's definition bears resemblance to a football on Sunday afternoon: It gets kicked around, thrown at people, flagged by moderators, measured, challenged, replayed for evidence, lost in scrums, piled on by everyone and used as a platform for larger agendas.
Half of this movie is Empire/Jedi with some minor mods like we saw in TFA with it's take on ANH. The other half of this movie is a cobbling of plots from Battlestar Galactica and the Keymaker arc of The Matrix Reloaded, again with slight mods, window dressing, and and some flips. Thrown in dashes is the stampede from Lion King, Spaceballs(Rose even brought her own Schwartz Ring along), the principal thesis of Lord of War("Who's going to inherent the Earth? Arms dealers. Because everyone else is too busy fighting each other."). I've seen Bridge on the River Kwai and 'direct inspiration' is a joke.
I think back to the fanfiction accusations of TFA and to my own fanfiction back in the 90s. What I saw Rian doing with this film is what I was doing with my fanfiction. So I ask myself, was it really fanfiction, or was it 'refreshing'? I don't waste my time on fanfic.net or whatever that site is that everyone else seems to want to waste their time reading bad stories on and then complaining about willfully doing so.. But I'd say they were as original as TLJ.
    "...Maybe.."

Is it possible that the word "original" is the most overused adjective ever? It's certainly not particularly descriptive. It suggests only things that are uniformly unique have value.

It's the eighth episode of a movie franchise aimed at kids and adults alike. So I'm not sure "original" is completely the right tone of adjective at all. Star Wars' themes and mythology were all weaved from very old sources anyway. Even the concept of the "Force" is borrowed from myth spawned literally thousands of years ago, it comes from very old concepts.

What The Last Jedi truly is as a film, to me, is it is very reflective. Remember Rey looking for answers? All she can find is a mirror of what took place seconds before?

She needed to break that to see what truly lies next? To allow for growth and understanding?

That cool, amazing, life-affirming message is at the core of The Last Jedi. It's a beautiful positive Star Wars film, like earlier good work in the franchise it provides a sense of hope, even when, real life influences hit the franchise with Carrie's untimely and tragic death. The film is all about how death provides renewal for new life. It's about how students rise above the wisdom of their masters.

Yes, indeed, very old, "unoriginal" themes, but the kind that beautiful myths are wielded from.

Luke Skywalker is a legend, love live Luke Skywalker.

That - ever so cliché - "The supreme leader is dead. Long live the supreme leader" scene is cringe-worthy at best. I would have preferred that Kylo Ren bring Hux in close via choke-pull. He could have said "You're a great general, so I offer you this choice ... Serve me or die."

That would have fit both characters better IMO.

It's a crime that we didn't get to see more of Darth Maul, but I've always found the Vader hype overblown, though I do like him. I love Kylo Ren and I'm surprised more people don't, tbh. Give me a bad guy that's got inner turmoil. Half the time I'm like "You a-hole!", then I'm like "You poor thing.". I'm not afraid of robots, but I am afraid of real people.

Haha! I don't know if you watch Black Mirror, but "Metalhead" was my favorite episode of Season 4! I should clarify that *these* sorts of robots DO scare me!

Can we just stop and reflect for a moment about how a thread bemoaning TLJ’s lack of originality was created by “Snoke33”.:p

My input: it was the most original SW film since ROTS. And if it wasn’t original, as in different stylistically and story wise, then how come so many people are having meltdowns because it “didn’t go the way they thought”?

Ironically, Luke is dead. "Long Live Luke Skywalker" seems a bit of an odd thing to say now....

Btw, generally the word "legend" only applies to stories of long dead people of significance. "Living Legend" is used for those of significance who are currently alive.

To be fair, I don't think the OP is suggesting it has no originality, but less than some people imply.

To be fair to those who love the movie, some of the original ideas have gone over well with fans on both sides of the fandom.

To be fair to the haters, most criticism about the movie has little to do with how original it is, but on how it went about being original.

For me, it feels like Empire, but in reverse. The Battle of Crait is at the end, while The Battle of Hoth is at the beginning. One of the things I've always wondered is how the main Rebels managed to get away after Hoth was destroyed. We just followed Han, Leia and Luke's as opposed to the Rebellion. Here we see how the Resistance 'gets away' where as Empire we don't. In fact, it doesn't even look like the Battle of Hoth did any damage to the fleet.

what a great way to make a point. Insult someone then make your point. Never seen so many people so defensive over such a mediocre movie
