Many viewers were no doubt confused during the final battle between Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi, especially when Luke ignited his father's blue lightsaber (which was shattered in two just a few scenes before) instead of his own green lightsaber. Speaking with IGN, director Rian Johnson revealed his reasoning behind this decision and also shed more light on why Kylo Ren didn't recognize his grandfather's lightsaber during their duel.

It has been discussed several times before that Rian Johnson planted multiple hints in the final battle between Luke and Kylo, showing us that the Master Jedi is actually not there. While the blue lightsaber is one of these hints, there is also a particular reason why Luke decided to use it instead of his own green lightsaber. Here's what Rian said to IGN:

Now remains the question, why didn't Kylo react to the appearance of this lightsaber, which we saw split in two just mere moments before that? Rian has the answer for that too:

We know how much Kylo is fond of his grandfather's possessions from The Force Awakens, and it was a clever move by Luke to use Anakin's weapon so that his nephew would be even more blinded to the trick the Jedi was pulling. But even without this explanation, I think the scene works perfectly well. It is very obvious that Kylo is consumed by his rage towards his uncle, and I think he wouldn't have noticed even if Luke was using Mace Windu's purple lightsaber.

And now it's time to ask what you thought when you saw Luke staring down the AT-M6 assault and surviving the full barrage from the First Order. Did you think he was just too powerful or that something else was going on? My first reaction in my first viewing was that the walkers killed the Jedi with their first shot and what we saw next was Luke's Force ghost. What did you think?

I initially assumed he was just so damn powerful that he created a force bubble around himself to protect against the barrage of laser blasts. And that Luke was feeling like a pimp so he had to "Get, That, Dirt Off Your Shoulder!"

It was suitable that he go out swinging with the lightsaber he first ignited. (blue)

I seriously thought when we found out that he was a projection that he had already died on the island.

I had a suspicion he was projecting himself from his beard and when the lightsabers never clashed I knew what was going on.

    Why?

Sidious did the same exact thing in an episode of clone wars but I believe had to use some sort of cauldron. Don’t know what episode exactly but I think Yoda has to save Anakin in the same episode. Pretty sure it’s while Palpatine is still unexposed. Timeframe wise.

I haven't read the article, but it's pretty self explanatory to me.
He finally accepted his place as a jedi again after refusing the saber (twice) from Rey.
Why the blue one? Because JJ ended TFA with Rey handling over the blue one. And because RJ rejected the "saber calls to you" storyline.
Could have been the green one as well (would've made more sense to Rian's story), but since Luke originally rejected Anakin's it must've been the blue one.

Maybe Ben Took Luke’s green one and purged the crystal (synthetic? In canon still? Right?) that’s why his cross saber is so unstable.. but then what happens to Bens blue one? I guess speculating is fun but for how much the story group gets paid to sit and ponder this blast (which is all I do basically), I hope they have it figured out.

I seriously thought he'd done a makeover before leaving the island. Shocker when Kylo's blade didn't hurt him. I can hear a fan saying, no, no, Luke step back.

I just took the blue as Luke symbolically finally accepting the saber he rejected and consequently rejoining the action and once more taking on the mantle of the legend the galaxy needed.

Exactly, that's how I interpret it too. He rejected it twice (the second time after Rey attacks him) and when he finally accepts it, the powerful stuff happens - basically what Rey hoped for when she handed it to him for the first time.
