Which musical themes from the prequels, originals and The Force Awakens will return in The Last Jedi? What do you expect John Williams to do with these themes? Or will John Williams create a completely new and original score with hardly any throwbacks to the themes he developed for The Force Awakens (as he did in the prequel trilogy)? Did you like John Williams' music for the Last Jedi trailer?

Binary Sunset is a given. At east partially.
Rey and Kylo theme also a given.

I'm sure they will use Han and Leia's love theme again. Partially.

I hope we can here something of Jedi Steps again.

Speaking of the soundtrack, is the music at the start of the trailer, before we see Reys hand, new, or an old theme? It sounds familiar, but i can't place it

If John WIlliams composed Rey's theme to fit within "Binary Sunset" aka The Force Theme, then he's even more of a genius than we knew.
Listen tot he trailer - they blend PERFECTLY, and with very little manipulation of the score. It's BRILLIANT.

Pretty sure it is from somewhere in Jabba's Palace somewhere - though the exact moment is escaping me at the moment.

It was written with Binary in mind. On a side note, Kylos theme is Reys theme, but backwards.

It's no accident. I still believe there siblings.

No questions that this is no doubt done deliberately. If you listen to Star Wars Oxygen at all, David Collins stated this shortly after TFA came out in 2015. They did 4 podcasts - can't remember which one it is in, but he played both themes on top of each other way back then.

Might I just point out that we heard the Force theme and Rey's theme blended together already, at the end of The Jedi Steps and The Finale?

As others have pointed out, a lot of John's work for the ST has been based on some previous Star Wars works (for example, there's a rising melody in The Scavenger that is nearly identical to the melody used for another scavenger: the Jawas), and he's really taken the task of making new music for these characters in his stride whilst respecting the old. As much as I love some of the prequel music, one of my personal problems was how frequently a theme would be stated (for example, the Force theme and the Imperial March).

I'm actually expecting some of John's best work in SW to date in this film, and I'm especially interested in hearing how he develops Kylo's and Rey's themes as their story develops, and also what he does with Luke's/the main theme in regards to the state of mind we find him in the start of TLJ.

This is the longest period to date that he's had to spend on scoring any particular film in the franchise, and with less of a time constraint I think it will more than pay off for us fans.

We also have to remember that music for trailers is outsorced to some different company - John Williams isn't directly involved with its production. That being said, I'm quite interested in how will the music sound, as for TLJ, the method for scoring the film is a bit different. Normally, the score is written after the scene is fully editted or the score is fit into the scene if it was written before the film's final cut. In case of TLJ (at least according to Robert Meyer Burnett,) John Williams wrote the music first and the scenes are edited in such a way that the image is fit into the music, not the other way around. It'd be intriguing to see the result of such a process.

PS. While making a rough cut, Rian's editing team used a John Williams-only temp score.

That actually worked quite well for the Battlestar Galactica Reboot. They did the same thing there with Bear McGreary's music in the last two seasons.

As for scoring trailer music. I know that the first teaser to the TFA has music specifically written for it by John Williams. I was under the impression that TLJ trailer also contained music recorded specifically by John Williams. If it is in fact just a composite of existing music then wow (!), awesome job!.

Are you sure? The first "Thanksgiving" teaser used the music from the Sarlaac pit and then the main Star Wars theme when the Falcon shot is used. I don't remember any other music in there.

I'm inclined to believe that the music for this trailer was, in fact, composed by John Williams himself (though likely not conducted by him). My reasoning for this is simple: we're eight months out from the film and he's been working on the score since the start of December, if I'm recalling reports correctly, and so this is by far the longest period he's ever had in regards to composing music for any film in the franchise thus far.

Not only that, but a lot of the music I'm hearing in the trailer, whilst sounding like it takes inspiration from a myriad of previous John Williams scores (as can be said for many of the scores he composes) and Star Wars ones in particular, does sound unique to this trailer, such as the great triumphant brass that kicks in around "This Christmas" or the use of what sounds like a male choir throughout certain points in the trailer. And let's not forget the fact that The Jedi Steps and The Finale from TFA ends with Rey's theme over the Force theme, as we hear in this trailer.

Then again, there are certain parts of this trailer that suggest it could just as likely be a mix by a third party based on previous scores (and if that's the case, then bravo, because this absolutely sounds like it was written by Williams himself), and a particular instance where this is implied to be the case is the use of the opening cue of The Ways of the Force and how it is cut into what sounds like Snoke at the end of the trailer, when it cuts from the title card to the release date.

Whether Williams or a third party (I personally lean toward this being the work of Williams), whoever is responsible for this masterpiece of a trailer score deserves a fair few pats on the back, that's for sure.

It was all newly recorded music by John Williams at Skywalker Sound. Even the familiar Star Wars theme at the end was newly recorded.

Well there were reports that he was actually helping record and conduct the teaser music whilst Johnson was still editing the trailer. It is a tradition in Star Wars marketing that the first teaser consists of an actual new recording.

I was disappointed in TFA score. It was still above an beyond most movie scores because it's effen John Williams, but I got far less goosebumps and feelers happening as I did with the OT and especially the PT. The PT (say what you want of the films) is easily the most ambitious and amazing though the OT is a close second and paved the way for all of it. The PT score not only had character themes, but every scene big or small had some kind of little tune that stood out whether it was Anakin firing up his Pod racer for the first time or a ship landing in the beautiful world of Coruscant, John Williams added so much heart and soul to a trilogy that didn't have much without it.

I recall this tune as part of a larger piece in TCW.

Have a time stamp for any particular piece by any chance? Trying to get into the minutiae of the music in this trailer, I'm already counting 5 clear themes or so in the trailer.

I'm thinking we'll get Leia's theme again. Probably Luke and Leia for a family reunion and potentially more. If we see Lando we might get a variation of his theme. It's possible we'll here Yoda's theme, and maybe the Imperial March. Other than that it'll probably be a mix of TFA music and new music. I would love to here some of the prequel music though

Tracks I'd like to here in the next movei from I-VI

    TPM
    Anakin's Theme
    Droid Invasion
    Duel of Fates
    Qui-Gon's Funeral

    ATOC
    Across the Stars

    ROTS
    Battle of the Heroes/Anakin v Obi-Wan
    Anakin's Betrayal
    Immolation Scene

    ANH
    Throne Room
    Here They Come
    Princess Leia's Theme
    Binary Sunset

    ESB
    Lando's Palace
    Asteroid Field
    Yoda and the Force
    Imperial March
    Han Solo and the Princess

    ROTJ
    Luke and Leia
    Parade of the Ewoks
    Forest Battle
    Luke v Vader

I was just listening. I don't hear it exactly that way, although a couple of spots come really close. Same with the Emperor's Throne Room track on the ROTJ soundtrack.I will keep hunting.
