Do we have any idea of the actual songs/titles of the upcoming soundtrack? I recall seeing a thread with discussion of this topic but cannot remember where.

    And my favourites:
    - Rey's Theme
    - Yoda's Theme
    - Binary Sunset
    - Luke and Leia
    - Funeral Pyre For a Jedi
    - Cantina Band I and II, and Jabba Flow
    - Imperial March

I swear to god, if John Williams uses a sad variation of the Han Solo and the Princess theme... I will cry so much that I won't have to use the loo during the movie. God, please let them see each other once more even if it's only in the past.

I'm tearing up just thinking about it. What a sap.

Also, I'd like a couple's theme in line with Across the Stars and Han Solo and the Princess. Second movies always have one and I wanttttt. Doesn't really matter who the couple is.

This doesn't look like a JW tracklist, to me. Too many short, clipped titles.

It is relatively early still, I agree. Yet, I looked at the old soundtracks (from OT), and they are not *that* different from these.

JW is done with his work already -- so there is a slight change the tracks above might be somewhat accurate, or...?

Looking back I think it was around November 27, 28. Amazon France accidentally listed the tracks early.

I was rewatching A New Hope and the scene where Obi wan kenobi first appears has some motifs very similar to the first few seconds of TLJ teaser trailer.

    TLJ teaser
    listen to 0:00 to 0:09

    A New Hope
    listen to 2:19 to 2:24 and 3:18 to 3:29

Anyone have any new themes they're hoping for, or old themes they hope come back?

As for me (I'm beginning to sound like a broken record with this), I'd love for the Jedi Steps theme from the end of TFA to show up again in the Luke/Rey scenes. And it might, considering John Williams made a full suite out of it (which you can listen to here):

I also hope the First Order gets a proper theme this time around. My understanding, based on unused music people have discovered, is that there was a First Order theme in TFA, but it got cut out. We know Williams is going to continue developing Rey's theme, cause he said that was the highlight for him. A more fleshed-out theme for Kylo Ren wouldn't hurt, either. If it's based on the Leia theme in some way, all the better.

I don't know why, but I fully expect March of the Resistance to be dropped. Hard to say why. But Williams has this odd tendency of abandoning prominent themes from first movies in the second one. Anakin's theme from The Phantom Menace is an example. It's used very, very briefly in Attack of the Clones in a quiet scene, then never shows up in Ep. 3.

I’m not quite hearing it, unless it’s the very slight hint at the Force theme in the former being very evident in the latter?

I personally think the eerie sounding stuff at the start of the teaser trailer are a nod to the start of TESB’s Clash Of Lightsabers:

As for what I want to hear in TLJ, @tm0910196 , I of course want to hear Rey’s Theme developed further, and Kylo’s leitmotifs incorporated as the groundwork to a new piece. The Force Theme, of course, seems to be a given, and it always gives me chills, and I think Jedi Steps could return at he start of the film to some extent.

What I really want, though, is a very dark and somber Main Theme/Luke Skywalker’s Theme, after, I assume it is initially heard when he and Rey speak for the first time at the start of the film. Then, when we get that HOLY SMOKES WHAT DID LUKE JUST DO moment - which I’m willing to bet we get in this film - we hear a resurgent Main Theme/Luke Skywalker’s Theme, which could, perhaps, be nuanced by having deeper lows and higher highs, as musical evidence that this is the same character who has had to learn a lot of stuff to get to this point.

The instrumentation is similar, but nothing in terms of motifs strikes me there.

Yeah, I think the return of Jedi Steps is a given and that's cool, because it's a great theme. It will probably become the Ahch-To/Jedi training/discovering the Force theme. I don't see March of the Resistance going anywhere. Anakin's theme disappeared after TPM, because it was definitely made with child Anakin in mind - it didn't fit him as a troubled adolescent.

As for new themes, we're probably getting a shared Finn/Rose theme since they're on an adventure together (or maybe just a Finn's theme). The FO theme sounds like a no-brainer, I really hope it's the one that was (almost) cut from TFA, I really like it. I also think it would be amazing to get a new theme for Luke, because the old one doesn't fit his current state (and it lost its connection to Luke along the way). I'm really curious how would JW approach it.

I'm also curious whether Ahch-To will get some kind of identity soundwise. Underlying soft choir here and there would be fitting. And speaking of choir - it would be great to have it back in general.

If we're getting Kylo's redemption, I thought it would be quite powerful to use some form of Han & Leia's theme in reference to Ben.

If Luke meets Leia - get ready for a sweeping rendition of their theme from RotJ... :) I've never been a fan of that one, to be honest, but hearing it again during such scene would be an absolute tearjerker, especially after Carrie's passing.

Not the biggest fan of it either, but it’s still a wonderful piece. Honestly, I think it’s biggest problem is that it sounds a lot like a love theme...and, well, it sounds like it was the foundation - a VERY firm foundation - of Marion’s Theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

If TLJ or Episode 9 returns to Mustafar or Vader's Castle, I want the Battle of Heroes to play. That's my number one favorite SW theme.

No, @JediChase17! They should reprise the Mustafar-arrival sections of Enter Lord Vader!

@JediChase17 I love Battle of the Heroes too, but I think it needs some modifying to be fit for purpose in Vader’s Castle: perhaps slower repetition, quieter, and longer lasting blasts from the brass?

@tm0910196 I like the idea of Enter Lord Vader too, I have to admit!

Personally, if we see Vader’s Castle, I want something with parts of The Immolation Scene interwoven with a stringed Imperial March (if not the former on strings and the latter on wind instruments); as the place of Anakin’s ultimate and most costly failure, and the place which I’m sure offered him little consolation after donning the leather suit, I can’t think of much more appropriate.

So our new themes introduced in TFA were

    Kylo Ren's Theme
    Rey's Theme
    The Resistance March
    Jedi Steps

    Revisited themes
    Main theme
    Force theme
    Leia's theme
    Han and Leia
    Imperial march (kinda)
Among others slight ones here and there

Traditionally the second film has given us a love theme at the very least, Han Solo and the Princess from TESB, Across the Stars from AotC. I suggest that one of the new themes will be a love theme. But whom for?

    I suggest the combos
    Finn and Rey
    Finn and Rose
    Rey and Kylo

Other than that I'd like to see a theme for Finn be written and maybe a cool battle piece.

    For pieces coming back
Luke and Leia is a must
I'd like to here across the Stars and Anakin theme(especially if Hayden Christiansen is in it to play Anakin's force ghost). Dual of fates would be fun but not likely. I'd love Lando's Palace and asteroid field. I'd really more like to see pieces derived from them. I want more call back musically than we got in TFA but I don't want so many that it's basically not new.

If we break it down, there are three motifs we can associate with Mustafar, in order of appearance:

    • Enter Lord Vader (1:00-1:20, 2:32-3:12 on the album track)
    • Battle of the Heroes
    • The Immolation Scene
Judging from its use in Ep. III, the Enter Lord Vader stuff would probably work best as a theme for the planet itself, outside of associations with Darth Vader. So if Kylo and the Knights of Ren fly there or something, it would make most sense to reference it there. Battle of the Heroes is specifically tied to the fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan, so if there's some kind of callback to that duel, then I could see that theme being alluded to.

But I think the mention of The Immolation Scene is onto something. Cause that works for Vader's injuries and turn to the Dark Side, and it also stylistically mirrors music associated with Kylo Ren (The Starkiller and Torn Apart). It would actually be really awesome if we got a mix of Torn Apart and The Immolation Scene. The cynical part of me says Williams probably doesn't remember an obscure cue like that, but then, he reprised the Henry Jones, Sr. stuff in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! So we might be surprised.

That's true, about Anakin's theme. I didn't think of that. But there were the "darker" parts of the Anakin theme as it descends into Imperial March territory, yet he chose not to use those. But you're likely right. I won't be surprised if March of the Resistance is there, but I also won't be surprised if it's not.

Actually, how cool would it be if the main title were still used as Luke's theme? Yes, it's lost its connection to him, but I think it would go a long way toward revitalizing that particular theme, which has been underused since the PT.

If there's one thing the prequels did right, musically, it was choir. Soft choir, loud choir, it all worked.

I don't remember whether I or @NinjaRen said this one, but a Ben Solo theme that takes ideas from Han & Leia, as well as Torn Apart, would be pretty cool.

I actually love that theme, myself. I've been inwardly begging for its use in the event we get a scene like that! It has the disadvantage of being a theme in the last movie of a trilogy. Meaning, it might only get used once.

    --

As far as callbacks, @SuperBenKenobi1992, I agree. Unfortunately, John Williams admitted when TFA came out that he almost feels (his word) "embarrassed" referencing old themes too often, because he has evolved so much in his style of composition. So unless the director specifically wants it, he's most likely to make completely new music.

Finn already has a theme, and Poe as well.

Finn's theme is heard here, its stunning (0:00-0:44):

Poe's theme can be heard in this piece:

And this is for the fans :):

It's just underscore IMO. If there was a theme for Finn in TFA, it would stand out. "Finn's Confession" is hardly noticeable. It was composed in reference to him, but this doesn't make it a theme yet.
