I imagine titles should be leaked in a couple weeks. I believe TFA's tracklist came out at the very end of November.

Clever remark, never checked it backwards. I believe they are related in a 'spiritual' way, being yin and yang, both as two separate entities being bigger when united, and both embracing light and dark. They will balance each other, and by doing so breaking the concept of 'duality' and dogma's.

TFA-poster shows them side by side, so we can agree on the fact that they are for sure related!

Just to clarify: Kylo Ren’s leitmotif is not a 1:1 mirror of the core motif of Rey’s Theme, but three of the notes are indeed mirrored from one to the other, as @Valim was hinting at; EDA in Kylo’s motif becomes ADE in Rey’s Theme, but there are other notes present which ensure that this is not case of a 1:1 mirror in the entirety of this leitmotif and theme.

However, something that is equally interesting (maybe even more so depending on what ideas theories that you align yourself with) is something which hints at them being either related or possibly even at a potential romance. The three notes which overlap between the Kylo’s leitmotif and Rey’s Theme, the ACE in EDACE (Kylo) and ACEADE (Rey) make up a 1:1 mirror of the first three notes in Anakin and Padmé’s love theme Across the Stars (ECA).

    Like so:

If this was intentional, the question remains: are they romantically interested in one another, or are they both the grandchildren of Anakin and Padmé?

John Williams: “I never asked J.J. Abrams who Rey’s father is, but I think it’s Luke Skywalker. Your guess is as good as mine, though.” (May 13, 2016)

John Williams: “So in a few weeks I’ll receive a first viewing of [Star Wars: Episode VIII] and I should know who Rey’s father is – we don’t know, we’ll find out.” (August 15, 2016)

Yeah, I remember reading about this; I love how honest JW is when it comes to stuff like this, because it gives us a frame of reference for what he was thinking when writing Rey’s Theme.

It doesn’t make much of a difference to the key points about Rey’s Theme, though, such as the way it is so heavily steeped in the nuances of the Force theme/Binary Sunset, or the way that some of its parts mirror Kylo’s leitmotif.

Just got to wait and see I guess :p but I cannot wait to hear what John’s brought to the table this time!

We’re all on the same page that this leitmotif from the Main Title is considered Luke Skywalker’s theme, right?

And that the leitmotif in Binary Sunset is also, and more commonly, referred to as the Force Theme?

Someone please reassure me so that I know that I’m not going crazy...

Correct. Initially the Force theme was meant as Obi-Wan's theme, but it evolved with time. Even JW calls it "the Force theme" now.

By the way, if somebody doesn't know it yet, check out the original (unused) Binary Sunset cue:

Even though it was clear that "the Force theme" was Obi-Wan's theme when they were making the movie, George thought it would simply sound better in this scene. They used Leia's theme when Obi-Wan dies for the same reason. It just sounded right to them.

Yeah, I always found it a bit odd that it was referred to as Obi-Wan’s theme for a while if I’m honest, simply because we hear it in Binary Sunset first.

And thanks, I knew so, but it’s nice to know that I’m not crazy; was just asking because @DailyPlunge seemed fairly adamant that Luke didn’t have an “official” theme (which would be a leitmotif from the Main Title), and that the Force Theme was actually his theme.

And I'll stand by that. Luke doesn't have an official theme. The music used for Luke is used through out the saga films. I think you're getting caught up in "official." The music wasn't intended for Luke, but it was used with Luke. That music is used all over the place. Rey has an official theme. Luke does not.

So is the Imperial March, which is considered to be Vader’s theme, and it isn’t always used in reference to Anakin’s inevitable fall.
Yes, I’m getting caught up on “official”. I’m getting caught up on it because you stated that Luke didn’t have an official theme. I’ve asked what it even means to have an “official theme” (your words), to which you haven’t responded.

Yes, it’s used all over the place now, but it was written with the purpose of being for Luke. It being repurposed elsewhere doesn’t make it any less Luke’s theme, in the same way that the Imperial March being used without Vader (or implications of him) around doesn’t make it any less Vader’s theme. Likewise, as @srg alluded to, Leia’s theme is used when Ben Kenobi dies, but it’s still Leia’s theme all the same. If anything, it just means that John Williams thought that it would also work well there.

As I quoted before - and to which you still haven’t responded - from the liner notes of the Ultimate Edition Soundtrack of A New Hope, written by John Williams himself, in reference to the Main Title: When I thought of a theme for Luke and his adventures, I composed a melody that reflected the brassy, bold, masculine, and noble qualities I saw in the character.

Plus, wouldn’t this argument (i.e. it’s used all over the place) go against your own argument that Binary Sunset (AKA the Force Theme) would be Luke’s theme, seeing as it’s used in every live-action Star Wars film?

Ditto. Looks like a hard fact to me. The main title is technically Luke's theme, but it's true that it has become something more general. I myself have some problems associating the main title fanfare with Luke in my head, but it's still clear to me it was intended for him. There are many moments in the OT where it's used in reference to Luke specifically.

When will we hear the first clips of the tlj-Soundtrack? Does anybody recall when that was the case with the tfa-soundtrack?

    Yeah, I couldn’t agree more.

I think that this leitmotif in particular (whilst heard elsewhere after the fact) is very clearly what Williams intended for us to attach to Luke, out of everything heard in the Main Title:

It’s what we hear when we are first introduced to Luke (01:32), for instance:

I don't consider it an official Vader theme, but it certainly perceived that way far more than what you think is the official Luke theme.

It's the main title for the Skywalker saga. I've never thought of that as "Luke's theme." I think y'all are making my point... there's not an official "Luke Theme." Thanks for the chat! :)

I believe the first sample of TFA score we got was when they showed a clip from the movie on Kimmel:

And then Jedi Steps was featured in one of the spots. I don't think there were any samples on Amazon or something like that, but maybe I'm wrong, because I was off the Internet at that point (to avoid stuff like this :p).

Oh, right. I forgot about that. But I don't know what came first.

Back at it with “official” I see. Thanks (once again) for defining that.
Your word and opinion over John Williams’? Yeah...I’m good thanks.

I think you might want to research what a leitmotif is, and it’s purpose, to better understand character themes if that’s what you really think, because a character theme (i.e. a leitmotif) certainly isn’t an entire musical piece, in any case. :)
