Disclaimer: I don't want this to turn into a pro-TLJ or anti-TLJ debate. This purpose of this thread is simply to discuss the similarities between TLJ and an old old fan fiction story from 2016.

So, apparently it has been discovered that a famous fan fiction writer of Star Wars wrote a long story back in 2016 which shared some eerie similarities with TLJ:

    http://scavengersholocron.com/category/home/something-you-should-know-about-the-last-jedi/

These are some of the key plot points that are extremely similar.

    - Rey's parents being nobodies that sold her for drinking money
    - Snoke bridging a telepathic connection between Kylo and Rey
    - Rey believing there is still good in Kylo
    - Kylo killing Snoke

In addition, there are several other small details that are similar, such as Poe's rank being changed to captain by Leia, and Phasma fighting with a staff.

Of course, these might just be coincidences, but there seems to be too many coincidences. Nevertheless, there is no proof that Rian Johnson was inspired by this particular fan story, and the idea that he would even enter an obscure web site and do is sounds ridiculous, indeed. But it's certainly not made up, as mentioned by the article itself a journalist at The Atlantic wrote a piece about this last month:
    https://www.theatlantic.com/enterta...predicted-a-major-last-jedi-storyline/548885/

So, what do we make of this?

The fan fic writer just took clues from TFA of where certain characters were headed.

Similar to how Rian Johnson would see the TFA daily shoots and decide from there where the story should go.

It's not that surprising that out of the thousands of fan fics written on what comes next after TFA, that someone would be real close at being right.
It's not like the fic had any of Johnson's original characters like Rose, Holdo and DJ. Or new animals like Porgs, crystal foxes and space horses.

He definitely did not rip off some fan fic. Come on. . The fan fic came out 2016 and Rian had already been writing and shooting by then.

The very idea that Rian Johnson would spend time online reading fanfiction to find one that he likes (not to mention Lucasfilm) and then stealing from it is beyond crazy. Besides, the timeline of production shows that this is the case of two people having similar ideas (and then Internet making a big deal out of it and not bothering to research the truth):

the only thing i believe Rian Johnson did as absolute fan service in response to TFA specifically was make Adam Driver take his shirt off.
which i wish he hadn't, but that's neither here nor there.
it works well enough for people/kids who don't notice all the other not-terribly-subtle Freudian stuff going on.
though seven people still voted in the latest poll that they believe Rey is a Solo, so i guess it still wasn't unsubtle enough. : o p

    • The writer of the fanfic wrote on their tumblr that they did not think Johnson stole their work.
    • They state that they thought the comparisons were remarkable because they were coincidences.
    • They then go on to explain briefly how their versions differed from each other.
    • They also make a repeated point of stating that they never posted anything claiming fault or accusing anything, but instead sent their notes to those who had noticed the similarities and had asked the author.
    • They end by stating that people outside of their control then made a story out of their fiction's similarities with The Last Jedi that they did not ask for.

In short: No. It's not plagerized.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

exactly...there are a lot of instances where multiple stories/projects about the exact same topic are released at the same time but it is still very eerie.

The Rey/Kylo lightsaber pull (while the ship is impacted) is an incredibly strange coincidence.

Like others have said... The Last Jedi was developed long before this fan fiction was published. If we're going indulge in conspiracy theories the better question would be how did the fan fiction author get the story treatment?
