    Music people, help me out!

Is the music in The Last Jedi trailer written by John Williams? I know for The Force Awakens they used a different composer for the trailer and that's quite common. I'm just wondering if this music is stuff we're going to actually hear in the movie, and if so are these new themes we're hearing? What do you think?

No, it's 100% not John Williams. These are obviously his themes from TFA but the track was certainly made for the trailer. An artist known as Ursine Vulpine, who often contributes to Star Wars trailers (TFA trailer, TLJ teaser), stated he wasn't involved in this one. Could be Confidential Music (http://confidentialmusic.com) who did some work for Rogue One. Maybe some information will emerge, but I know that sometimes trailer composers aren't allowed to say to what extent they were involved.

As for the themes, I'm not hearing anything new. :) There's Jedi Steps (great choice!), Kylo's theme and Rey's theme (plus a minor use of Imperial March). It's just a new arrangement and I think it's very well done for trailer music standards.

It's definitely not Williams himself, but whoever made this, did a great job. The already known themes sound familiar but different.

The beginning and the chorus is new.

I loved the Imperial March weaved throughout the piece in the trailer.

Thanks for the info srg! Yeah I was 99% certain this was not John Williams but it's good to get confirmation. Agreed the music was strong for a trailer, and I kind of forgot how strong some of the themes were from TFA. I can't wait to hear what Williams did for TLJ!

Yeah, but I'm not counting these original parts as themes.

The music didn't grab me. Sounded like your standard-issue trailer music.

Same here, loved the way it was merged into the TFA themes.

It's full of trailer music cliches in terms of arrangement and sound, but it's effective. It does its job. I love the use of Jedi Steps theme and how nicely it goes into Kylo's theme (both themes fit the scenes very well).

Absolute masterpiece, it blended well with the scenes.

I doubt the music was written by Williams. I enjoyed the music but not Williams.

Found some info. The track was made by a trailer music company called Twelve Titans Music (who did the music for BTS reel too). http://www.twelvetitansmusic.com/ Not sure if they're the sole contributor - probably, but sometimes there are multiple companies/composers involved.

For the record, even when the music in these trailers uses themes from the movies, they're almost NEVER John Williams. Except the very first teaser for TFA. And you can tell that one is Williams, because it doesn't sound like regular trailer music.

That said, I like that the trailers for The Last Jedi have been using themes from The Force Awakens. I was surprised we got the Jedi Steps theme in the latest trailer.

A few times I had a feeling they're using some JW recordings but edit them and beef up with samples. Most notably, the second TFA teaser sounds like it. A few parts in the first half of TLJ teaser also sounded like live orchestra, but maybe that's just a good work by the trailer composer.

I noticed the same thing. When Rey's hand lands on the rock, it sounds like a Williams "surprise chord," and, in fact, the entire first half of the trailer before "It's so much bigger" sounds like a recording from Williams was the base.

Exactly. :) Maybe not so much the "surprise chord" (sounds like this can be easily made with modern-day virtual instruments), but some of the individual instruments in the first half sound very dynamic (flute and horns). So yeah, it's either live recording, or the trailer composer put some effort into crafting the sound. I don't know how common is it for trailer companies to record their music live, but I'd guess it's extremely uncommon, so if there's live music, it's probably from the film recordings.

The Last Jedi teaser and trailer prove that by now Rey's theme, Kylo's theme and Jedi Steps have become fully established and recognizable music pieces in pop culture. Classics. The only other TFA classic I haven't heard pop up in these trailers is The Resistance Theme.
