Definitely BR, but at the very least they are all above average.

I was never into BR and couldn't really follow 2049. It was very strange and weird and the who's and what were difficult to grasp. Hence I really didn't like it as much as I should. I'm definitely not into the Planets of the Apes trilogy, but that movie I could understand. It was definitely better for me than Blade Runner. However, technically speaking War for the Planet of the Apes isn't really a science fiction movie. Its dystopianism. A completely different genre to Science Fiction.

My mother isn't really knowledgable about Star Wars but loved TLJ as she loved TFA. I think BR was too self-referential to be a serious contender. But I do believe that if you're into Blade Runner, it is probably a very good movie. But a movie has to cater to all audiences not just diehard fans. That's where TLJ wins. For general audiences it is is a movie they understand and can appreciate based on the knowledge that is provided to them. TLJ does an excellent job at that. Blade Runner failed to do so. Hence the flop.

Besides thinking TLJ is an outstanding movie in terms of moviemaking and as such the best of the three, I must confess I love Star Wars, so the choice which one is best is really a no-brainer for me.

But this year the critics are angered by fan reception which is usually all the more reason for them to present Star Wars with awards and nominations just to make a point. Grasping what the critics community is actually talking about, TLJ is a serious contender, not so much for best movie, but definitely a whole range of other nominations.

Usually movies that win are movies no has seen but the commitee believes we all should. That's the basic rule of the whole oscar circus.

Bladerunner was superior in terms of the visuals but way too long. I'll probably cut my own version of it taking out about 45 minutes or so once I get the BlueRay because I really want to see this movie again but I don't want to sit through the entire 3 hours. I think that Dawn of the Rise of the Prequel to the Sequel to the Reboot of the Apes should have won the award, its pacing is far superior to TLJ and it feels more coherent. TLJ might have higher highs than POTA but it also has a ton of really low lows which in total makes it inferior imo.

Hm... I never watched the original Blade Runner (except of some scenes while zapping) and I found BR2049 very easy to follow... But nonetheless I have a feeling that I will watch TLJ many times more in the future than the BR-sequel - which was nevertheless a good movie. and maybe the "more clever" movie...

    Pretty much.
I know Lord of the Rings trilogy won a bunch of awards, but that probably was just an exception.

That was more because they had now told the story and could rewards the production team for it's efforts. The Fellowship of the Ring is the better movie, yet Return of the King capped all the awards. If IX keeps up the quality of the previous TFA and TLJ you might actually see some awards for Star Wars.

It's funny to think how we used to think the special effects of TPM, with all the greenscreen and bluescreen technology and digital effects, were revolutionary. They were for a time revolutionary. After TPM everyone was doing it. It is almost as if TFA did the opposite: back to the old way, sets, props, making it as real as we possibly can. TFA's special effects philosophy in conjunction with those of Ex Machina and Arrival spawned a whole new age and a whole new philosophy on special effects work.

I definitely prefer the new philosophy over the old TPM one. Everything is better than having Liam Neeson perform dialogue with a tennis ball.

Agree. But TPM has a lot of good momments in my opion:
Watto, Sebulba and the Battle droids are amazing! They are still look very real to me.
I think the mess with the CGI started with AOTC and the digital clonetroopers and Yoda, that was the low point to me. They looked artificial back in 2002 and today its even worst.

You are right, the effects of TPM were technically better than those in AOTC or ROTS. I think with TPM it was also still almost 50/50 in terms of practical and digital work. They still used a lot of models and rigged explosions and usually filmed in real life locations. For instance Sebulba really looks quite realistic as you say.
