I think this is being over complicated.
In RotJ, Yoda says to Luke: The last of the Jedi, will you be.
In TFA opening crawl, Luke is described as the last Jedi.
In TFA, Snoke refers to Luke as the last Jedi.

That is all it means. He is the last Jedi. It doesn't mean there cannot be a new Jedi. It doesn't mean he is going to die.
It simply means that VIII is about Luke. It is about the last Jedi and what he means to all the main players:

Rey needs to learn from him.
The Resistance needs him on their side.
The FO and co. want to kill him.
Ren wants to finish destroy the Jedi.

Rey is not a Jedi yet. She won't be a Jedi in TLJ either. She'll likely become a Jedi in IX. In TLJ she will just be a student.
"You're not a Jedi yet", as Vader once said to Luke.

Luke: "Then I am a Jedi?
Yoda: Ohhhhh, not yet! Vader, you must confront Vader. Then, only then a Jedi will you be.

Luke is the last Jedi. It means nothing beyond that. It's not a premonition of his death. It is not plural. It is not the end of the Jedi order (I mean, wtf?!?!?).

Love the title because lots of people seem to know who is the last Jedi in their opinions. And I love it because in the end the last Jedi could be Snoke himself, the son of Yoda, the brother of Bib Fortuna, a stylized gamorrean warrior or the son of the son of the son of the son of... ;P(gamorrean)(green)

I hope this movie will truly be about the end of the Jedi Order. I believe they will show how the force is capable of being tapped into by anyone, not just high midichlorian people.

Rogue One and TFA have already hinted at this with Chirrut and Finn. Finn seems to have his awakening (his conscience) at the same time as Rey and also proves that with training, could probably wield a lightsaber effectively. Chirrut most definitely has the ability to quiet his mind and feel the force. Even in the recent Rebels Dark Saber episode, Kanaan speaks to Sabine about not having to be a Jedi to feel the force.

This is no accident. Disney is undoing GL's boring Jedi Order of blood tested high midichlorian monks and going back to the mystical living cosmic force, the one that surrounds and binds every living thing.

Well that's my point about it being premature perhaps. It is a great title, ominous and gripping. But wouldn't it be better for a later episode when the bad guys really do kill off the final Jedi (and many episodes after ROTJ -- They just "returned" two episodes ago after all!)

I always thought it was the charade of a war that Sidious created in order to set in motion his rise to power and control of the Senate. But, yes, Sidious himself too!

The Jedi are wholly compassionate, selfless servants of the will of the Force. San Tekka said himself in TFA how important they are. The Jedi aren't going to be killed off. It makes no sense. People need to get passed this mix of light and dark nonsense. Star Wars is about good vs evil, selflessness vs selfishness, love vs hate and greed vs compassion. The dark siders represent the bad. The Jedi represent the good. This will always be the case. Whoever is a mix of both is a master of neither.

:p I know, I know, and I see the point.

Needless to say, in my opinion, that's in the another movie. He was the last Jedi in the last movie, yes, no doubt. But the story goes, and new characters will appear. And in this movie will be the last Jedi. What I mean it's not necessary to be Luke the last Jedi (probably not said during the last days ;)

My point is Ben Solo, who is young and not sure about his feelings, fighting the dark and the light, could be the last Jedi.
Rey could be the last Jedi, if Luke dies or defeats Snoke in an epic battle to rule the galaxy like his father wanted.
    Could be Luke, yes.
Or Snoke, killing Luke and Rey to be the last Jedi.
Or could be another Jedi who survived the last order.
Or a hidden brother, or a hidden son...

That's why i love the title, because we think it will be Luke and Disney could say: Yes? Here you have the Last Jedi. And it could be someone who nobody expects.

Often, Star Wars titles have a double meaning. One is obvious, upfront and serves its marketing purpose:

The Phantom Menace was pointing at young Anakin Skywalker heavily during the marketing campaign. After watching the movie, the Phantom Menace also meant the rise of Palpatine.

Attack of the Clones was heavily marketed as...well... attack of the clonetroopers... After watching the movie, it also meant the attack on the Republic of the "clones" Palpatine-Sidious - Dooku-Tyrannus

Revenge of the Sith...that one is tricky. Upfront meant the revenge of Sidious and the fall of Anakin... I don't see any double meaning unless it refers to Darth Plagueis' master plan of creating Anakin Skywalker.

A New Hope. It was never used in the original marketing campaign.

The Empire Strikes Back: Nope, pretty straightforward.

Return of the Jedi: Marketed as "Revenge of the Jedi" as Luke's return... to Tatooine to save his friend and to fight Vader and the Emperor...but after watching the movie, it also means the Return of Anakin Skywalker from the darkside of the Force.

The Force Awakens: Was marketed as the rise of two Force users... Kylo and Finn-Rey (It wasn't clear)... while, after watching the movie, well... it's the Force itself that rises and influences all protagonists to find Luke Skywalker.

So... I don't know.... The Last Jedi

It WILL be marketed heavily as The Ultimate return of the last Jedi: Luke Skywalker.
    But it may also mean...

    - Luke dies and Rey becomes the Last Jedi?
    - Rey turns and leaves Luke as the last Jedi?
    - There is something in the plot that refers to an historical fact about the last of the Jedi at some point...maybe related to the temple?
    - Maybe Luke is no longer a Jedi?

We'll know for sure on December 15th

The Last Jedi "Luke" is hopefully going to stomp some A$$ for once. Tired of training and learning, I want to see a Jedi be a Freaking Master Jedi and take no dang names while doing it.
