I am conflicted about the title. It has punch but I fear story implication I would hate a rejection of Jedi ways. No third ways. No grey jedi (no such thing). Please no departure from the fight between good and evil.

Maz speaks of the ancient fight between good and evil so it's not like the Sequel Trilogy has not already started with that theme, the story group would be aware that continuity is to be adhered to.

yeah also there is no such thing as a "Grey" jedi...it's more like once you leave the order of the jedi and/sith you simply become a force user

    Yeah, I wouldn't overly worry!
The first thing we hear is Tekka saying that without the Jedi there can be no balance.
Snoke is afraid of Luke coming back and resurrecting the Jedi.
Maz talks about the fight between good and evil.

For me, whether it means Luke or Luke and Rey - it is simply about them being the last Jedi and what that means to everyone else.
To Rey - she has found the last Jedi. The last hope for the galaxy.
To the FO and Ren, Luke is the last Jedi to be destroyed.
To the audience, it's a sign that this film will be hinged around Luke.

They've already got rid of the Sith. That, perhaps, we can accept for now (no Darth's though...shame).
But they won't get rid of THE JEDI. The Jedi are Star Wars and are irreplaceable. And it doesn't make sense to abolish them anyway.

    Here's my outlandish theory:-

Luke Skywalker literally will be "The Last Jedi".

In his island isolation, he has experienced visions of the distant past, perhaps in proximity of the force tree. When he recognised Rey at the end of TFA it was because she is the girl in the visions, which shocked him.

These rumours from a while back now that Rey would be a reincarnation of that first child of the force were wrong - she literally will be that child, i.e. the first Jedi! And Kylo, who Luke has also seen in the visions, the first sith.

Luke realises his destiny is to reset the universe, once Snoke (and potentially any other force using outliers) has been defeated, Rey and Kylo must be expelled to finally bring balance to the universe. To do so he finds a secret, ancient technique to "cut" time, and sends the last offspring of Anakin Skywalker - one good, one evil - back to the Jedi dawn.

The sequel trilogy thus serves as an ending and a beginning to the entire Star Wars mythology...

My theory is that Rey and Kylo will become Bendu. They have been setting this up in Rebels since season 2.

Maybe i'm just being overly simplistic. However, isn't the most likely answer for why the movie is titled "The Last Jedi" is simply because we are getting Lukes story that was missing from TFA?

I just can't read much into this title. TFA tells us "the last jedi" is missing, VIII is thus the story of luke.

I don't think the title has implications for Rey/luke dying/ ambiguious jedi. I think this is basically another title.

you could call this movie VIII: Lukes story :D

I watched TFA for the first time since they announced the name 'The Last Jedi' and as many in this thread have already said about the scene with Snoke and Ren. Snoke said Luke is the Last Jedi, and if he survives he will be able to start a new Jedi Order (I am paraphrasing as I can't remember the exact dialogue). Episode 8 is about Luke being the Last Jedi, and how he trains Rey to take over the next generation of Jedi. Which definitely means he could die in this movie.

Its that simple, there is nothing wrong with deep speculation; however, some of us go way beyond sort of like going off the rails but its fun though hahaha

Its funny how comic books have evolved. The pages of this comic although its in near mint condition is so dark, interior page art fading, the newsprint pages are not well suited for this medium. Digital is the the way to go. I still actually collect floppys but I need a bigger home haha. The corner where i store my boxes have become an eye sore...

I hear you there. Getting away from newsprint was the best thing to happen to the comics industry since they made the jump. I much prefer the slick paper and better colors. I've been buying comics for over 30 years. While this is a really bad time in terms of stories, comics are certainly prettier now than ever.

Not to get off topic too much, I collect the TWD, Saga, a couple of Marvel books, of course Marvel Star Wars, and a couple of DC titles. A few years ago, I started collecting comics digitally ( on the iPad ) until a good friend of mines, I met in art school, started working for my favorite comic book shop Forbidden Planet NYC.
He convinced me to start collecting floppies again. My collection is getting way out of hand, so I'm going back to digital; I really like Marvel Unlimited, you get almost their entire library online, so I'm going back to the trade paperbacks and digital, and stick to Marvel SW floppies. I don't collect to make money, ( some of my friends at work buy really expensive comic books online and statues in hopes of trading or re-selling but you have to find the right nut to sell to haha) but I simply collect for the of love the medium, therefore I think that digital / trades works for me. I'll end up saving in the long run.

Yeah the first lesson I learned when I started collecting in the 80s was not to buy as an investment. I did get expensive titles, but theu were to complete my silver age collections. I even started working on golden age runs when I finished my DC stuff.

After about 45 longboxes even my mancave needed pruning and I got rid of about half of my comics. All of my marvel stuff and the comics I didnt have sentimental love for. Now down to 27 longboxes of stuff I can't say goodbye to, though I am pretty much done collecting ongoing titles
