I never said the Lightsaber itself was magical in my opinion. But the crystals and such could be. In stuff that's non-canon now, each crystal and color was something different. So no, your comment wasn't disappointing, to me at least. But also, just for arguments sake you have no clue whether it's magical in some capacity or not. Since nothing is known about Lightsaber contruction in the movie series, nobody real knows anything about it. So in reality just to be silly, perhaps the "sword smith" you speak of must use some type of magic. But back to being serious. I only meant the mystery of creating them could be better let untold, like most Agee the midi-chlorian aspect should've been. And I am one that's on board with the relic Hunter in this movie. Im all for them explaining the origins of lightsabers if done correctly. But I do think, despite your "disappointing" comment that there is more to the color and crystal choice than just, well..Color. So there may very well be something "magical" as you say to that aspect of them because like I said though it's non-canon now, the crystals and color did have some more to them and they could very well go in the direction while explaining them.

There's a reason for the "Legends" thing. And, to expand on the already rich universe... they will have to cross this line at some point. For my part, I was, for the last 32 years, and since I am an old school Star Wars nerd (only believe what's onscreen)... always wondering how Luke built his saber for ROTJ... who helped him, where did he find the material... it must not be a quest.... he has to RUSH to save Han on Tatooine, not go into a quest for mystical material. And I say Mystical here, since, if it was mainstream.... you would have guards on the sailbarge with kick-assing lightsabers instead of staffs.

There is a deleted scene from the beginning of rotj that shows luke assembling a light saber using the force. Its easily found on youtube.
Luke did not need direct instruction on building a new light saber. The force binds all things together and a powerful jedi like Luke would be able to feel the componets of the saber and understand how they are bound and building ones own is a final test of control. And it doesnt hurt that Luke was also a farmer who had to fix stuff around the farm and suped up his speeder. Sounds kinda mechanically inclined with force augmentation........yeah...... I think thats what I mean

Well said. I did not know about the deleted seen. I'll have to check it out. You have stated the same concept I mentioned earlier, just more eloquently and with better detail. I think you are correct and the quote of Vader I mentioned earlier supports that.

Im 100% on board with that, what I was saying is what I thought about during the movie. I just always liked to think that he was give some guidance. Also, im not sure if it was clear in what i said, but I never thought the construction itself was the difficult thing or what Mars said about it needing to be quick to rescue Han. First off, wasn't it a year between ESB and ROTJ? So wasn't too much of a rush. Secondly, if they stick with the Crystal part for the lightsaber, that was my whole point. Where did he get a new Crystal from? Who told him where to get it? Im also one that goes by what's in the movies, but since there's really NO info on what is required to build a Lightsaber in there,I only assume the Crystal part is true in my mind. So, since there was a whole year between ESB and ROTJ, there was plenty of time for Luke to go on this "quest" to get a new Crystal(if that's what is needed). And yes, just to confirm it IS A year between Empire and Jedi, so there was ample time for Luke to go on his quest,be it a mystical quest or not, to obtain the materials and whatever else. I mean, I still feel as though there was something (most likely from force ghost Obi) saying "Luke, you need this, this and this and must travel here and here to find it" I don't think Obi-Wan or whoever had to tell him how to actually assemble it, but someone Had to give him the actual knowledge of what he needs. The more I think about it now, the more i actually want to see what goes into it all. It seems quite possible that since there seems to be this artifact collector that in some capacity theyll maybe explain how the Lightsaber came to be. And as for the scene in ROTJ, as much as I thought that was awesome when I saw it on blu ray, it doesn't show more than him just tinkering with the ignition for lack of a better word. I wish it showed much more.

It's possible that before Luke went missing (assuming that rumor is actually true), he trained or met someone to build lightsabers or something like that. Maybe if a character like that exists, the main characters meet him/her after getting off Tatooine (or whatever the desert planet actually is) while they're searching for Luke.

If you were a licensed (lolz) lightsaber craftsman, after the PT... you'd have either been shut down by The Empire or by necessity, as business would be non-existent seeing as how most Jedi were hunted and killed.

So you'd need a side gig obviously, something to pay the bills... and you'd have to either be very, very old... (an alien solves for that, lookit Yoda's lifespans) or you'd have to intentionally pass this lost art onto your descendants in order to keep the craft alive...but what good would that do given there are zero customers in need of said skill. It'd be akin to being a master typewriter builder/repairman in today's day and age, and teaching your kids how to uphold the skillset required. Somehow it doesn't make that much sense. Unless The Empire was your only customer, and you survived by outfitting Sith Inquisitors with interesting lightsabers. I find it hard to believe a beast/muscle like Maul had the patience and knowhow to craft his iconic dual-bladed lightsaber.

Why would you risk your livelihood and life to advise some upstarts in the art of lightsaber building... when The Empire has been good to you... singlehandedly keeping your business afloat. Something doesn't add up. Granted, The Empire likely stiffs you on the bill a bit, setting terms that are advantageous to The Empire... but risking it all to help Finn and Rey? Backstory will be needed to explain motivation here.
    Just something to consider.

In which case it's probably somebody Luke taught the skill to, since he was probably getting ready to train some new Jedi after RotJ.

This is an awesome thread, because I too have always wondered how Luke knew how to build his green lightsaber. Considering nothing else outside of the OT films, I think it's more than likely one of three options.

    1. Luke asked Obi-Wan to tell him how to obtain/build a new lightsaber after losing Anakins in the confrontation with Vader.

    2. Yoda explained it as part of his training to become a Jedi. Assuming that Yoda taught Luke more than what we saw on screen due to time constraints. Building ones own lightsaber is a part of every Jedi's training. At least that's what I took from Vaders comment in ROTJ when he said " I see you have constructed a new lightsaber. Your training is now complete."

    3. The force spoke to.Luke, instructing him on building it. Yoda said " You will know when you are at peace, passive." That was in answer to Luke's query on how to tell the light side from the dark, but perhaps that's how Jedi see past, present and future while meditating. The force speaks to them, but is seen in there minds as actions.

That's just my 2 cents. I am however, hoping that more is revealed in TFA about lightsaber construction and the history of lightsabers as they relate to Sith and Jedi.

In EU or "legends" building your lightsaber is one of the first parts of a jedi padawans training. so I say option 2

If Lupita N'yongo is playing an orange skinned alien as the rumors have suggested, perhaps she's playing an older Ahsoka Tano? That would explain why she has the knowledge and experience of building lightsabers. I think that it would be easy enough to give people who aren't familiar with her character a few lines of dialogue to explain who she is , and for the rest of us who are familiar it'd be a cool way to find out what happened to her after TCW. I want them to stay away from the PT, but since she wasn't a part of it I honestly wouldn't mind. IF it's well written and serves the story.

Even before rumors started to transpire, always thought Luke's Skywalker's lightsaber would be cenral to the story of TFA. If you look at my very first posts on this forum, I speculated on the story of Episode VII being around the finding of Luke's saber and the rescue mission that ensues. Back then my belief was that after ROTJ, all Force users were considered outlaws since they were believed to be the ones reponsible for the wars that shattered worlds for the last 60 years I also thought that Luke was to be arrested after ROTJ as it became public that he was Vader's son and that somehow Leia managed to get him free and hide him.

Jedi Lightsabers, around TFA are more than relics. A lightsaber is symbolic. It represents the old samurai, now extinct. The weapon itself is banished and illegal. I also speculated on the fact that Han Solo's new job is now undercover agent to the New Alliance working into finding any illegal weapon trade activity and to bring them back to the new Alliance Intelligence.

In the process, they come across Luke's saber, they recognise.

Then, they figure out something is wrong with Luke and go into a quest to find out what's going on.

I still believe Imay not be too far from a bull's eye on this one.

My "swordsmith" theory is that Luke's saber is what drives our new heroes (and Han & co) to Luke.

If Luke lost his saber, he must have crafted a new one, and got material and/or knowledge to do so.

So, my theory, and I am excited to find out if I am right on that one:

Between ESB and ROTJ, Luke got help from a swordsmith that is still alive in TFA. An old friend, played by Lupita.

The very best swordsmith in the universe.

She is the only person that knows where Luke is hiding. And only Leia is able to convince her to tell the secret hideout of the Jedi Master.

Luke's new lightsaber must be something even more impressive than the one we've seen from Kylo Ren. A true gem for a Jedi Master of his stature.

Not wanting here to bring the lightsaber mythology down... I just think, like in Kill Bill... bring a little more dimension to a mere object that a Jedi toss around, lose in traffic jam on Coruscant or in a droid factory. A lightsaber is a piece of art, crafted and adapted for an individual, like a katana. And Luke is found because of that.

I like this for some fairly simple reasons. The main reason is the fact that the light saber is such an iconic symbol of Star Wars, and I think a subplot involving not so much how a light saber is made, but who post ROTJ has the skill and knowledge to construct one of these rare and exotic weapons, would be very interesting. Another reason, is that this is a subject that has never been explored in any depth or detail in any of the films.

Given the choice of say, sitting through another overly long and bloated light saber duel, or actually learning something new about who can actually build one of these weapons, I'd choose the latter.

That's basically representative of what I'm hoping for with the new films-

    More story, less flash.

Its pretty funny. I watched the new rebels tonight...which is now canon..and guess what they showed? Ezra on his "magical" or "mystical" journey to get his saber Crystal. They unfortunately didn't show him actually build the weird little blaster saber he decided to make but they do talk about the parts everyone chipped in. So I guess maybe we can actually assume Luke went through the same test to possibly find his new Crystal for his LS in ROTJ. The only problem I can see with this is that this temple required a master and an apprentice to enter. But im sure there was other ways or places to get one. But it also leads me to believe more what I said earlier about Obi-wan possibly coming to look to help him in that search since Yoda came to Ezra as a voice to help him. Interesting piece of the Lightsaber puzzle...as much as I don't know how I feel about his Blaster Saber. Also, if this is symbolic of how all of most jedi get their weapons, then I dont really see it necessary to even have a swordsmith at all as cool as it may be. It seems, like i suggested earlier, that the Crystal itself is the mystical and difficult part of the whole weapon and finding the Crystal, not the actual crafting of the weapon.

There was an arc of stories in TCW that had younglings go through a test and searching for their crystals.

    Thank you.

@CTownDrama would have been well served to watch that, or perhaps do a little more research other than "the OT didn't show it"

    There isn't a sword smith.

That was my whole point in this entire thread...was that there was no sword smith..also, my comment was strictly about Luke's new LS in ROTJ. If you read all my posts in this, you would know that I talked about the crystals and how I didn't think there was a sword smith and how my comments were based on wanting to know how luke got his new Crystal and my argument about Mars saying there wasn't time for Luke to go find it between ESB andROTJ when we know a year passed between them. So you may want to read the thread before judging what I said...since our opinions are the same. as I said before, I just thought (in my mind) that perhaps Obi wan came to Luke to help him find a new Crystal and such. My recent post was to debate the "sword smith" theory which I didn't agree with.

And I respect your disagreement my friend. That is what is so fun with speculating!

I am trying to connect the dots between the new gen heroes, the lightsaber and Luke, and the most obvious thing that came to my mind is that Luke, somehow got material/help from an old friend to construct a new lightsaber.... and the Samurai stories,

    Cheers :)

I did say that even though i disagreed with a sword smith, i thought it was a cool idea. Especially with your explanation of the samurai similarities. That's why I enjoy this forum, everyone's okay(for the most part) with everyones spec. Spec on my friends.

It does make sense that Luke might need some help building a lightsaber. That was always something which bothered me about ROTJ.
