He read Obi-Wan's books according to Shadows of the Empire, but it's no longer canon.

A force ghost, you mean? Because I don't know how that would work, I don't know if the Force could just send him a mental blueprint. Perhaps he just worked it out, or found a physical blueprint.

Actually I mean through meditation and communion with the Force being guided.

The basics of the light saber design are fairly straight forward from the cutaways. There is little technique the mystic element is find the right crystal.

I am not saying that a gem cutting alien or some cool this is how it is really made wouldn't be cool it seems like they went with find magic crystal and slap it in this tube with the wires, emitters and so on.

I think he studied maybe Obi-wan's holocrons?
I think that the force simply isn't enough to build a full fledged laser sword, that works exactly as those in the past, more so, looking exactly like Obi-wan's.

Oh right, okay. I don't know a whole lot on lightsabers, but I had always imagined them as rare and magicial machines which are difficult to come by. You would think that a machine capable of producing a light blade would have to be fairly sophisicated and complicated, but I guess the crystals are rare enough.

    Star Wars Rebels Spoiler

In the new Rebels episode, a boy constructs a lightsaber out of spare parts and very little guidance after finding a crystal. It's apparently not that hard at all if you have a crystal.

some people are mechanically inclined. If luke had taken his father's lightsaber apart between anh and empire then he would know how to build one. Kinda like if you take a toaster apart you may not know the names of the parts or even how they work but if you reassemble it and it works you dont need to know how only that it works. And if you throw the force into the mix perhaps using the force to concentrate he can see the hows and whys.
I dont have the force(obviously) but I can take a car completely apart and put it back together even though I dont know what half of the parts are called or what they do.
I dont know if I am conveying the point I am trying to make but makes sense that a boy who grew up on a farm fixing evaporaters and condensors and driods and speeders I think that qualifies as mechanically inclined and he is after all a Skywalker so the force is definitely strong. Plus noone ever mentions that just because the movie only shows a bit of training on dagobah with yoda doesnt mean they showed all Luke learned. An example of this is I doubt yoda taught luke to force choke the gamorean guards at jabbas palance in rotj but he had to learn it somewhere. And I dont recall the films really showing luke learn any force techniques except some lightsaber training with obi wan in a new hope and yoda lifting his xwing out of the swamp. And meditation, I may have missed one but the sentiment is still there
    Just saying....

Yeah, I always assumed that there was much more to Luke's training that we didn't see on film. The training scenes we did see were just a few examples. They weren't going to show the entire process, as that would be more than one film could contain and would get boring after awhile. I like all of the ideas proposed though (manual in OWK's home, Yoda taught him, taking old saber apart and reassembling, etc.) One other idea, maybe Obi-Wan's force ghost guided him or Yoda as a wisp. After the recent Rebels episode, I like the idea of Yoda continuing his training from afar.

I don't think a force ghost would have to mentally send him an image, it would just kind of council him through it step by step via conversation. This isn't how it went down in the deleted scenes from ROTJ, but I'm pretty sure deleted scenes don't count as canon.

Nice info! Good Lord, it's not such a problem now, but over time ... it's going to be difficult seperating the canon and non-canon source material. But I personally love the fact that we're getting this genuine attempt to keep things on a level "canon" playing field))

Which is Bulls**t. They will probably just claim the same thing again eventually anyway.

Yet again something they will probably just go with the EU on again in the long run anyway.

They better get to work. I really enjoyed a lot of the EU stuff. Some of it was a little over ambitious but the material that was directed directly at the films was good.

In the arc of clone wars that was referred to above that shows padawns going on their crystal quests, they enter a cave on Ilum where they must go through trials of sorts and find the crytal destined for them. They are then guided by a "swordsmith" that is actually a droid that is thousands of years old IIRC. They choose their materials and hilt from a selection from the droid and use the force to to float them and follow an aseembly diagram provided to them. Its from the episode titled the gathering and a couple episodes along the same story arc from that season, which is all canon now. Long time lurker first time poster.
