Welcome to The Cantina @Emione ... there's definitely been some discussion on that 'you know what' over here in TBOBF Chapter 5 thread

So I recommended the "Skip Episodes 1-3" method to my friend...and he didn't listen. He's very much enjoying the show, so BOBF fans, you've got another one!

If you insist on ‘boxing up’ the fandom, I would categorize us as Favreau/Filoni Star Wars fans who also like some (or all) of the SW feature films. :)

What...? I'm not trying to box up the fandom with that comment. I was trying to save him from 3 boring filler episodes, which it turns out he enjoyed and now likes the series. The SW feature films have nothing to do with whether or not someone will like another part of Star Wars. No, I meant it as "fans of this specific show, another rejoice because another person likes it." It wasn't derogatory or mean-spirited at all, and I'm sorry if you read it that way.
What do Favreau and Filoni have to do with any of this? It could have been about Visions and I would have said "Star Wars Visions fans, you've got another one!" It's not about the larger Star Wars universe here, it's about one show gaining a new fan. That's all.

Not in this comment, they really don't. If I introduce a friend to the Eternals and they like it, I'd say "Eternals fans, you've got another one!" That doesn't mean they like Chloe Zhao's other works or the MCU, simply that they're a fan of that one particular thing. It feels like you're blowing this out of scale here. I'm not attacking BoBF fans or critiquing the show here. I'm actively rejoicing that a new member has joined their numbers. I'm not trying to say that Filoni and Favraeu are great/terrible/whatever, only that someone is enjoying one of their works. That's it. But if you want to read more into it, feel free to do so. If you want to take it as a complement for Favreau and Filoni, be my guest.

I would agree with your point if we were talking about Favreau’s Elf or Iron Man or Jungle Book or Filoni’s Clone Wars. But the Mandalorian and TBoBF are interconnected.

”Boring filler episodes” sounds like a critique to me. :)

You’re entitled to your opinion but I would advise you to wait until the finale plays out before separating and critiquing two TV shows intended from the outset to be together — same will hold true with Ahsoka when that show kicks off.

That's a fair statement. A personal one, and my friend doesn't share, which is the point. My friend likes the show. Take it.

    Two things here:
First, it's totally fine to critique something before it's finished, especially on an episode-by-episode basis. However, I do agree fans shouldn't fully write off the show fully until it's all said and done. That's why I'm sticking through. I want to see this to the end, to know if my feelings about it will be proven right or wrong.
Secondly, I've been very open about how I'm waiting until the end before rendering my final assessment. When I came up with the 4-7 method, it was based on the information we had, my own feelings on the show, and my knowledge of my friend (which is all recommendations can really be based on). My assessment may change when this is all said and done, and I will gladly sing a different tune if that happens.

Second, the Ahsoka will be judged on different criteria, although the baseline of "I'm not going into this with too high of hopes outside of the hope you'll prove me wrong and I'll gush about this show," which is the same one I went into with TBB, BOBF, and Visions.

But just because a person is a fan of one doesn't mean they'll be a fan of the other. I love The Mandalorian, but I tolerate BOBF. You love both. My one friend here likes both. Other friends of mind love The Mandalorian and are tolerating BOBF. Yes, these are two interconnected shows, but their merits, fans, and accomplishments are separate, and should be considered as such. Not every fan of Star Wars will like every Star Wars item or story. Heck, not every Star Wars fan will like the stories by the same person! I have other friends who loved TCW and didn't care for Rebels. Most of my friends loved TFA and didn't like TROS. Interrelated doesn't mean one and the same. So, enjoy the times when your friends like the things you like, enjoy the times when they like the things you don't (which doesn't mean you can't talk, critique, explain, or debate, but accept at the end of the day that they like it and you don't), and acknowledge that you don't like things they do.

Absolutely, I agree with you. But in your case, you’ve criticized the entire show based on your opinion of two episodes. That was my only point — which you, yourself, have acknowledged. We’re good.

I dunno about that. At this point, I believe Favreau/Filoni Productions come with much higher expectations given their track record. And, for good or, I guess, bad, as a F/F Production, it will come with cross-over and cameo expectations.

There is no better illustration of that fact than the poll for episode 6 of TBoBF. How any true fan of Star Wars can actually feel ‘meh’ about this one is impossible for me to comprehend. But we live in a crazy world today so anything and everything is possible I guess.

Technically, my theory about skipping the first three episodes started with Episode 4, before we even saw Mando. (I think it was on a different forum, but I'll gladly provide that citation and dates if you desire it.) But you're not wrong either. These past two episodes have functioned completely and almost entirely independently of Boba Fett himself, and for a show revolving around the character, that's usually not a good sign except in very specific circumstances.

You're right. When Filoni writes or directs an episode, I've come to expect Ahsoka or any multitude of other characters he's created or shepherded. That's not a bad thing or a good thing to me. It just is.
Crossovers aren't a problem. Cameos aren't a problem. Crossovers and cameos that diverge from the main story are my problem. And it's not like I or most fans here or that I've seen or spoken to think that the Mando appearing is a bad thing. Because it's not. It's just that everything he's done and most of the things revolving around him have been more interesting than the things before him. When Episode 5 ended, the talk was more about what Mando was going to do next instead of what Boba was going to do next. And to me, that's a problem (but not an insurmountable one), because now the show isn't standing on its own merit.

Others may, but I strive not to. I want to give the show an honest chance. That doesn't mean I don't have some bias, given that I actually like Ahsoka as a character and have followed her journey since TCW, but the show will be judged on its own merits. Not the merits of the creators, not the merits of the characters or their past or any cameos, but what they do with what they have. I want to enjoy the show and see it for what it's trying to be.

You mean the poll that's only available to a small section of Star Wars fans who are a part of this forum? That's not a wide audience. But again, I'm not talking about the episode individually, but the show as a whole. A bad show can still have a good episode. A bad show can still have a good season. A great show can still have a bad season. I don't think BOBF is bad, but I do think its best parts aren't really made of its own merit.

    Ha! Ain't that the truth...

But we've gone off topic. My friend likes the show. That is the point. Let us cheer on his joy and enjoyment. Can we at least agree on that?

That seems to be a weird hobby that some fans have. Trying to demarcate where lines of taste are drawn between different groups of fans and then counting the relative wins and fails each group enjoys over the course of a film/trilogy/show.

It’s a reflection of today’s combative culture. God forbid we all revel together in one of the best Star Wars episodes (TBoBF Ep.6) of all time.

I don’t know, man. I’d say factionalism is probably one of the defining aspects of ‘fandom’. It’s pretty much the opposite of “weird”. It’s an intrinsic element of fanaticism.

I dunno. I liken it to your team winning the Super Bowl and afterwards complaining about a couple of stupid penalties the guys were flagged for in the first half.

You’d think we’re all part of Team Star Wars. There are certainly ‘seasons’ I was disappointed in, but the good stuff is what we tend to focus on. IMHO, the last two episodes of TBoBF are as good of Star Wars as it gets.

And I’d think all Christian sects would get along because they’re all part of ‘Team Jesus’. But no. For as long as there’s been passionate devotion, there’s been sectarianism. This isn’t a new phenomenon. It’s always been here.
Not everyone agrees on what’s “good” though.
And I expect there are plenty of people, who consider themselves ‘true fans’, who believe the last two episodes are the worst Star Wars has ever been. Who's 'right' or 'wrong' in that debate is certainly nothing I want any part of sorting out.

To be clear, I’m not making a value judgement here. I just don’t find this incredibly common thing to be at all “weird”. Unfortunate, but not weird. And I definitely don’t think that’s what @Use the Falchion was doing.
