Han's jaded disposition is the result of spending the next 10 years as a part-time freelance smuggler & a fulltime scruffy-looking nerfherder. Experience matters. If young Solo were as smarmy as the older version, the character's arc wouldn't be congruent. I thought AE was fine, aside from being a little short for the role.

I thought Alden did great job playing Solo. Remember he was playing Han Solo not Harrison Ford (which there is a difference) but he nailed the mannerism of Solo pretty well (which what counts the most). The Deep Fake Video does a good job on showing this.

Rewatching the opening of SOLO, it struck me that one of the reasons (besides the casting) that it didn't work (for me) is the sprawling sci-fi metro city scenes. It jolts me out of SW the same way it would have if The Man with No Name from the classic film, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, had suddenly visited New York City or Paris.

Jon Favreau has wisely kept the Mandalorian in 'the Old West.'

That is a fair point. I actually like sci-fi cities. Like Corellia and Courscant. But you are entitled to your opinion :) I just think the cities make the setting look nicer. My brain connects those cities to the genre of sci fi, the genre itself. But I can also 100% understand why some don’t like them. Maybe it is too futuristic for some. Idk.

The Han Solo of the OT (especially ANH) was a cocky gunslinger who covered up his insecurities with false bravado. A true depiction of Solo pre-OT would have been high on the snark-scale and way low on the 'gee whiz' enthusiasm-scale.

In addition to the poor casting, the writing left a lot to be desired. Instead of giving us a true depiction of Han in an entertaining tale, the filmmakers were focused on creating a movie trilogy and fell flat on their faces instead. Why? The Han Solo of Harrison Ford-fame was never meant to be a 'hero' pre-ANH. ANH started Han's hero journey.

It was as stupid a concept as having a Mando prequel where Din was displaying an heroic selflessness long before meeting The Child.
