How could he be aware of something if he's never witnessed it firsthand?

Hearing or reading about the force is one thing.... watching a 4 ton space-rino float in front of u spontaneously, is another.

Sometimes, poo-doo just defies explanation.... even for a Mandalorian.

I just wish these episodes were linger. First one was 39 this one only 32. I’m craving more content.

    well done Jon Favreau!!

big fan of them taking this series back to the Star Wars roots. And I cannot get enough of this sound track. Brilliant work by Ludwig Goransson!

I am so taken by our two companions. Let’s just hope our new little green friend doesn’t leave us too soon.

I like this show. It feels a lot like Rebels with a dash of Clone Wars to me. Probably the Filoni vibe is what I'm feeling. He's the man. This is definitely geared for a wide audience: kids, adults, superfans, and casual observers.

I gave this one a three because I believe it will be considered average as more episodes are released. Some good stuff in there. Not exactly filler, but nothing really profound in this episode.

I initially didn't know what to think of this episode. I was hoping for a little bit more of the story to progress. However looking back on it I think the ground work this episode laid will pay off in the future. Someone already mentioned what this episode did to build the character of the Mandalorian and I totally agree. He showed his flaws and his ability to get back up.

The best part was BabyYoda using the force! I figured something like this was going to happen right off the bat when it tried to help the Mando heal. Having it save him from the beast builds the connection between the two characters even more. Now they both have saved each other. It will be interesting to see if the Mandalorian turns the creature in or not. I don't think he will.

Loved it! My boys loved it! This series makes me feel like how I felt when I first saw Star Wars. 4/5 only because of the length.
    Can't wait for next week.

The whole Jawa section was pure Star Wars at its finest in a bottle, I can't remember laughing so much, just little details like their old fashioned comms system in the Sandcrawler, to how they are all waiting for him at the top and say the classic line in unison. Then the egg eating and Mando's shaking his head, for all he just went through...
From comments I have read everywhere there is a lot of talk about the length of the episodes and fillers etc, but we as Star Wars fans have to adjust to this, it's a new format that we are not accustomed to, yes Rebels built up the characters over time but this is a different kettle of fish altogether.
    There's no rush...
Season 2 is already in the works, the way this has started it could quite easily be a show that has 6 seasons or more..
4/5. only because I think there are better episodes ahead and these first two are really only setting foundations.

If you listen you can her the rustling of rocks and shaking of the Force as Babyoda places hus hand at Mando’s wounds. At least I heard it. It would explain why then Mando can climb a Sandcrawler and battle Jawas; I am sure when he falls unconcious after falling of the crawler Babyoda healed him.,

yeah I was thinking that when he was almost done by the 'egg monster' and the screen did a fuzziness to tell us he'd been knocked out. it felt to me like Yodling brought him around and maybe even sat him up

“I agree.” It is evident Babyoda proves that Yoda’s species is more powerful young. It gives new meaning to Yoda’s words, “truly wonderful the mind of a child is..” (AOTC).

They need to be longer and more episodes. They are making billions and we just get a few short episodes?

When have to alao remember The Force had been outlawed by the Emperor and his inquistors (a la Fallen Order and Rebels). Any Force Sensitives are either rounded up and converted into imperials or destroyed. It is concievable that the Mando has heard nothing of the Force. His line “I cannot explain what happened,” was chilling and indictive of a coming awakening, The Force Awakens. :)

I'm liking these little bit sized Chili's chunks: Get in. Get out. Get on with your life . . . . . . probably not much of that last part happening though.

There's a good chance that when this season is done it'll basically play as a long chopped up movie.

I'm really happy with this episode.

While some might see it as filler, I don't think it being this.
What impressed me was that this episode showed restraint. I was openly impressed when they had long take shots of just Mando and Yodababy walking with nothing else really going on. Really long down beats.

That was the important part, for me, in this episode. It was an important down beat. There was a bit of action in two spots, but for the most part, this was an episode centered on the down beat, and it let that down beat be what it is.

Old westerns are filled with these kind of sections - where you are just watching people travel, and largely in silence. But these aren't throw away sections because they do two things: they connect you to the character(s) in ways that intense story driven scenes just don't, by showing you their normality, and they provide the pacing of the style - which is a style of prose and painting. We are given an image and impression, from which we extrapolate. This downtime, this silence and slow pace...this is something we can tell is a normal part of their life; something they have to deal with, or indeed, prefer. Deep solitude and silence.

It is important to a true western to have these beats. It's why Firefly, which is a great and fun show, doesn't really strike me as fully pulling off the space western style true in form to the old westerns. It's also why new westerns don't often strike me as true westerns; they move too importantly and hang on the visceral too much.
Westerns aren't just about the showdowns, standoffs, and big moments - those are so impacting, in considerable part, because they are juxtaposed against considerable dry and long down beats.

The only reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because the rhino scene was a bit off phonically. I think this was because they were trying out new ideas, but it kind of threw it off for me a bit. The beast didn't have the foley one would expect with the steps, nor when Mando was hit by it. Normal foley would generate thuds and thumps for these moments, but instead, interestingly musical score moments were used to emphasize these events. It's a clever idea, and one that might be interesting if they can get a handle on it - as it fits with the leaning upon the prose and movement of the abstraction of that prose pretty well, but it did throw me off balance a tad. I might come to like it more in repeated watching, this new idea, but it defintely took me out of the moment.

However, I can argue with myself on this because it's really cool to be challenged by a film in terms of language - I don't typically have this happen these days. Most play it safe, or just attempt it by really overt and extreme visual attempts that try to one-up prior concepts of similar form, or they do it with content that attempts to be provocative. I haven't been challenged by a film's expression of film language in decades. So while I give it 4 stars because of this causing an off-beat, at the same time I give it 6 stars because it's really shooting outside the box in trying to push the boundaries of film language, while at the same time staying with the internal language of the film - no easy task...especially for something like Star Wars!

    As to this...
Most likely this wasn't a reuse of the set (since most of this was likely VFX created and not a physical set for the most part), but an add-in because of pacing.
They likely originally didn't have the second use of this scene outlined, and when it came to the edit, the absence of this kind of shot was throwing the beat off, so they grabbed one of the takes from the other. This actually happens a lot in film - far more than most usually notice.
    Well spotted! :)

    Cheers,
    Jayson

I am still coping with the Jawaicide.

Yes they are thieves and traders, but they used ion weapons on Mando not a blaster.

I was really moved by Mando’s confrontation with Wooley Rhinoth. Even before Babyoda intervenes, Mando keeps getting back up after each skirmish, it reminds me of a scene in The Last Samurai:
