The Mandalorian S1E4

OK I have read through this entire thread....great comments by all. Here is my take:

1. I enjoyed Ep4! lots of heartfelt moments, opened up Mando's character more and showed his motivations. For me here are the episodes ranked in order of coolness: 3, 1, 4, 2.....but I enjoyed all of them so far!

2. Babyoda is beyond cute, trying to imagine how it will blow up the Christmas gift season. We went out today on Black Friday to do some shopping (yeah we are gluttons for punishment) and didnt see any babyoda stuff. Only funkopop we could find was the "I have spoken" dude.

3. The effects in this series are top-notch and the Razor Crest just pegs the scale on coolness for me. I want to build a model of it!

4. OK....OK.....need help on this one. What is the range of one of those trackers? There is no way it is galactic range, right? I mean it only started beeping faster for Mando when he was like 20 feet from the door of the room with babyoda in Ep 1. How did the bounty hunter at the end track them to that planet??????

5. Have you gone back and watched all the previous episodes? I have - really enjoy ep 3!!!!

6. It still has not sunk in that every Friday we get a brand new SW live action show to discuss!!!!!!!!

 

1. Episode 4 is growing on me. My first viewing was underwhelming, but I am starting via rumination, to come around to it. I think it was jarring after such a action and intense Episode 3, and how can you top Mando Squad to the rescue? I am coming around.. perhaps a second viewing will help.

2. Babyoda is beyond cute. Disney better get the plushies ready for Xmas! I was however not as fond of Babyoda this episode, it could be the novelty of his or her character waining. Babyoda is cute, but I didn’t feel Episode 4 really did much to progress it’s story, oppose to Ep 2 that featured Babyoda using the Force.

3. I fell in love with the Razor Crest on Episode I. It was fun to see Babyoda play with the buttons lol

4. This episode soldified that Babyoda has a tracking chip inside it’s person. If Mando and Babyoda are to catch some Zzzs, they will need to surgically remove it or Babyoda will have to use the Force to destroy it and em.. poop out the shards.

5. i’ve rewatched episodes I-III.

6. Indeed. Everyweek we get new Star Wars!!!

 

My reading of the raiders is that they have it good. Live off their spoils, eat drink and be merry. The Imperial walker is a fall back system sitting quietly
until required. After it is activated, and I think probably driven by a raider with just enough skills to aim and shoot; shots that took out village infastructure and shelters. No need to kill the villagers, just control them. Run when they came storming through. Raiders have not had a problem with the villagers. They can take what they want. BTW, you can't just store the Krill. They will spoil and rot. Laid out on wicker to dry? What do they make the beer out of? Love the fish ponds. The village has a lot of potential. Maybe noticed as a future problem, and raiders and Imperial walker are assigned.

 

1. My ranking is in the order of release date: 1, 2, 3, 4. The most I enjoyed 1 and 2.
2. Love every moment of that little MacLunkey.
3. Absolutely. Love when a ship is another character. Hope to see more of it like first 2 episodes.
4. Those trackers thing is really really confusing. Why is beeping the exact person you want in the Outer Rim is beyond my imagination. The person has a chip inside? DNA? Big bosses knows where exactly they are and hire hunters? Tracking by the smell of the skin?
5. Have seen first 2 episodes 3 times. The others 2 times.
6. Fridays are interesting with this. Love this way!

 

Those of us who bet Mando won’t show his face for season one look to recieve a big pay day.

That's the Star Wars magic. It's possible that he found them by chance. I assume that the tracker is at least with range of a planet or a bit bigger.

 

I like the episode but it didn’t have me on the edge of my seat like ep 3. Is that good or bad? Eh who can say? Still love this show.

BbyYoda seems to be maturing fast, walks before he crawls and doesn’t just walk but does it fast enough to keep up with Mando. Him playing with the razorcrest buttons tho... GAAAAHHHHH adorable!

I also watch “The Good Place” and one of the two villagers that hires Mando is Pill-Boi. And he talks like Pill-Boi. That, more than the “Seven Samurai” / “Bug’s Life” story parallel make me iffy on this episode. I guess Star Wars has their “Pill Boi’s” too... cough Elan Sleezebago cough.

I’m rewatching it now to search my feelings more, I dunno it feels more like an episode of Stargate SG-1.

Ok so the actor Eugene Cordero does not talk like his character “PillBoi” in this episode but he moves like him and just stands out to me.

Anyone else get some Jurassic Park vibes from the at-st tracking and takedown? Is Favreau being cute giving this epi to Bryce Dallas, or is she the one being funny in an episode she wanted to do?

@Angelman yeah Cara’s takedown of Mando was brutal, awesome action followed by great humor! Rewatching it, the little moments like that stood out more and if I was on the edge about this episode I no longer am.

 

Thoughts.

Red-“eyed” AT-ST; check! (Lighting the cockpit red is to provide light inside for the crew without destroying their night vision/ability to see out the window, obviously. Come on, peoploids! All y’all have seen this in dozens of war movies and shows already! No reason to fabricate misery over it here).

Loth-cat; check!

Babyoda eats a toad; check!

Klatooinians; check! (I love how they not only bring back past background species in this show, but put them to actual use within the story. Great stuff!)

Raiders praying on a population and resorting to clever scare tactics rather than slaughtering their "work force" which would in turn harm the raider's future revenue; check! (It’s almost as if these guys are professionals!)

Babyoda’s quirky-old-sensei-with-his-soup scene; check!

Acting, suspense, world-building, and heart; check, check, check, & check!


Yep, this looks like a rock solid episode to me! (Which I won’t get to see for half-a-year or so, oh well).


And Cara Dune’s BRUTAL takedown of the Mando; check! (Oof!)


Predictions: Babyoda will speak at the end of the season & there will be a the-gang-coming-together-to-fight-something moment in episode 7 or 8 (as @LadyMusashi said earlier)

That's easy, my friend. Their range is what's called "Dramatically Appropriate"

My favorite scene of this episode was “Baby Yoda” standing there eating the soup after Mando’s and Cara’s fight. He seems to be very observant. I wonder when we are going to see that he is smarter then his age makes him appear to be. I would think that it would be towards the end of the season.

 

Also noticed that klatoonians guttural sounds are like Jabba's voices, specially when the Rancor is killed. At least is what I think.

And those Tagliatelle are not from Italy.

 

A few thoughts:
1. Perhaps the tracker is DNA based. Otherwise Mando would probably have tried to remove it.
2. There was plenty of time for a bounty hunter to put a tracking device on the Razor Crest during the Mando commando fight scene.
3. I agree with some other comments here, we will see IG-11 and Cara Dune again, and maybe the “I have spoken dude” again as the “Guardians of the Galaxy (far, far away) Equipped with Baby Groot, errr... Bayb Yoda!

For a moment, I thought baby Yoda got shot and I envisioned an internet carnage unlike anything anyone has ever seen.

 

i'm hoping we'll circle back to these characters and their community, so in that regard, fingers crossed that this wasn't just filler somehow.
i do think the episode had a really more than somewhat predictable formula.
it works, but the lack of some surprise or deviation made the whole thing feel very safe; you knew how it will end before it's even halfway through.

for me, that's okay.
the world-building more than makes up for it and i just like spending time with the characters.
and as @LadyMusashi said: Gina Carano looks amazing!
(seriously, she's a beast in action! and i'm not worried about her acting; she'll warm up). : D

 

I like to think of it as an character episode/introduction episode. EP2 was a lot like EP4.

 

I think we've become so used to binging a series, watching one a week doesn't feel as complete of an experience, at least not right now. I think in the long run though, all of the anticipation and great conversation between episodes will enrich the experience for everyone. I guess what I am saying is, binging is the the quicker, easier, more seductive way, but it is not stronger.

 

It is. This episode is not about the village and the convenient attack upon it, no those are tools used to further the backstory and the character arc of Mando. That's the purpose of the episode.

 

Just to add my contribution :

 

Don't forget Filoni is involved, and if you've watched The Clone Wars and Rebels, you know an episode that may seem inconsequential may be important later on. Also, there is a Cara Dune Black Series and Funko, so I think she will appear again.
