Just watched the episode and I really enjoyed it. Probably a good 8/10 or thereabouts. I am slightly worried that the episode won't be as rewatchable as I'd like, though. Still great stuff with loads of world-grounding easter eggs and callbacks etc.

A huge plus for expanding upon/showing Tusken culture. Great stuff!

Also a plus for the absolutely ridiculous-looking Mining Guild people; LOL!

Loved it, good to see it continue on the same path as it started. Spaghetti western vibes are still strong...
While I also want to explore new, unknown, or less visited planets, it's always nice to go back Tatooine... particularly if it involves Boba Fett, Cobb Vanth, the Tusken raiders and the Krayt dragon (with the pearl also inside!)
Also love all the Star Wars universe references, all the subtle details and tie-ins to the novels, especially how it seems to unite both the new canon and the old legend stories... seeing that Bantha loaded with explosives, I knew that was going to be the killing blow to the dragon - KOTOR taught me that an explosive Bantha is a great trap for all kinds of beasts :D What I particularly liked is how the Tuskens are shown in a different light; they were always portrayed as mindless violent savages in the movies, so it's nice that The Mandalorian portrays them in a different light and tries to show a different side - as an actual people with real culture and traditions, somewhat similar to what KOTOR and particularly the old John Jackson Miller's Kenobi novel tried to do.

The Boba Fett reveal, while expected, was still great and exciting nevertheless; it's good to have Temura Morrison back! Looked like a real badass there in the dunes, watching the events unravel. His and Mando's paths will surely cross at some point, I wonder if they'll end up working together or become enemies? Also thought Timothy Olyphant was fantastic as Cobb Vanth and hope to see more of him in the future episodes...

Really looking forward to next Friday now...

I really enjoyed this and sorta called it earlier this week when I said wearing a Mandalorian armour does not make you a Mandalorian same as wearing a kilt doesn't make you a Scottish Highlander.

I literally shrieked with enthusiasm when Cobb Vanth appeared onscreen. When Mando was told about a Mandalorian on Tatooine I thought immediately of Aftermath and the story of the sheriff of Freetown (which was changed to marshal of Mos Pelgo but it's alright). And Timothy did a great job as Cobb Vanth.

The story about how they defeated the krayt dragon was really cool. I like how these series have presented the Tusken Raiders from a different perspective.

Yes, the sight at the end of We-Know-Who was quite interesting.

I loved just about everything about it. When that sand started to tremble and flow... I thought “Your move, Villeneuve!”

The story of a western, the world and style of Star Wars, the movement of side plots, the introduction of cool new characters for viewers only while die-hard fans feel rewarded because they know the character, exploring a previously explored world in more depth, great action, humor, and heartwarming moments? Yeah, this episode was pretty much the perfect example of how a second season should start while also being an example of where The Mandalorian shines, while also being an example of what a sequel series should look like, while also just be a darn good episode!

It wasn't perfect - there were times when Cobb had his mask on that you could tell he clearly wasn't speaking (his chin didn't move), and the CGI was wonky at times. And talking in a regular voice over incredibly loud speederbikes? Yeah, no. But all of these things are minor nitpicks.

This is easily a Top 3 episode in terms of quality. I don't think it's my favorite, but by golly was it amazing.

That’s disappointing I gues I have to put mine away then :p.

Also what is VOLDERMORT doing n the Mandolorian :p.

On a more related note as other have said Cobb Vanth is a great addition to the Mandalorian & hopefully he turns up again in a future episode.

OK, who has some nice high-res screen caps of "The Marshal" for us. Anyone? Anyone?

So I took some notes in my rewatch…. These are more or less stream-of- well, not consciousness but watchingness.

Space graffiti! Looks like it’s got strong anti-stormtrooper sentiment behind it. Presumably not made by the red-eyed thingies?

The music in this first part is all original—great stuff. Later chapter 3 stuff gets mixed in.

OK, does Gor Koresh give anyone else Boss Hogg vibes? Am I dating myself here? Regardless, his combover is 10/10.

Does anyone recognize the flags over the fight ring?

We saw this in the trailer, but I love how Babyoda knows Daddy’s gonna put some Whistling Birds hurt on these dudes and takes cover accordingly.

I love the Mando hand-to-hand combat!

Tatooine? Why does everyone want to go back to Tatooine? :p Fine.

Yay! The “Where” Bantha! I hope he’s not the one that gets eaten later. Don’t go back to town, Where Bantha!

Once again, Peli speaks for all of us with every word she says about the baby:

    · “Oh! Thank the Force!”

    · “This little thing has had me worried sick!”

    · “Come here, you little womp rat!” ~cooing noises~

    · “How much do you want for it? Just kidding. But not really.”

    · “You know, if this thing every divides or buds, I will gladly pay for the offspring.” I too want a Babyoda bud.

    *obligatory fart joke*

Mando has no time for fart jokes. He has business to attend to, which is orchestrating an infodump on unsuspecting viewers.

Aw, R5! <3 Bad motivator still bugging you, honey?

    Aw, speederbike!

Aw, Babyoda’s floppy ears! But I fear he may have an adrenaline addiction. Fat chance of getting help when his dad has a bigger one.
    Need for speed.gif

    -New music here.

A Star Wars campfire. Yay! Pedro Pascal spoke before the season began about improvising a line with Babyoda, telling him to stay back from the fire, but he wasn’t sure if it made the final cut. I wonder if it was here.

    Womp rats!

I’m not a big fan of the town of Mos Pelgo. It looks too much like a set and not “real.” Also, most of the extras can’t act.

Don’t leave your baby in car, Mando! It gets hot out there—oh. never mind. Baby was never strapped into his car seat in the first place. smh, Mando, what kind of father are you??

    Weequay!

“Can you describe him?” :D Weequay, you are funny.

Cobb Vanth looks like a very tall kid dressing up for Halloween in Boba’s armor. Obviously not Boba. Wait, the Weequay’s name is “Weequay”? Like “Mando,” I guess?

Western cliches! Bring ‘em on, I say!

Cobb Vanth: “Why don’t you join me for a drink?”

    Din Djarin: ???? He drinks???

Din Djarin: He TAkeS oFf hIs HeLMet?????

Me: He subscribes to the Kylo Ren school of “I Laugh at Helmet Hair”??

Babyoda, no, no! That’s a spittoon! It’s yucky! Doesn’t your dad teach you ANYTHING?
    thats a spitoon sweetie.gif

“He’s seen worse.” *sigh* Mando, I thought you were making progress here.

Oooh, here we go with the tight focus on the hand, twitching, ready for the quickdraw….

-The music is similar to the standoff music with Greef and co. in chapter 7.

Boy, do we stand there looking at the monster coming way too long.

    Womp rat closeup!

    Bantha teeth!
    Bantha eyes!
    Bantha nostrils!

    Extras running!

The sea of sand coming is a very cool visual.

I told you not to get into the spittoon, Babyoda. Now who knows how long it will be till you get a bath.
    Baby hide.gif

Lil Anakin’s podracer parts, is that you?

How can Mando hear Vanth talking over the speederbike motors?

Anyone want to translate the aurabesh in the holo about the Death Star blowing up?

Sandcrawlers: The EMT vehicles of Star Wars.

So how much of the Aftermath series are we tossing out here? Or is this just “a certain point of view” thing?

Boba’s chestplate is made of real beskar, it would seem.

Mando doesn’t just do Tusken sign language. He speaks it too. Doesn’t even get a sore throat.

Tusken massiffs? Like Mando can’t handle a widdle puppy. Who’s a good boy? Who’s a good boy then? Who’s the best doggie?
    whos a good boy huh.gif

-The Tusken music is the same as chapter 5.

Gaffe sticks are bantha tooth flossers, so jot that down.

More campfires for Babyoda to get too close to?

Bad dog! No drooling over Babyoda! He tastes like frogs anyway. So they say.

We’re a bit heavy-handed on working with others who are different/ “perceived enemies” but since it’s election time, I’ll allow it. As long as we get some flame thrower action too.

-Here’s the “crossing barren lands” music from chapter 7

    I see you, riding-single-file-to-hide-your-numbers.

There are a lot of “crossing the desert” shots in this episode that could be pared down.

Nice to see you again, binocs from chapter 5.

“Sarlaacs are crunchy and tasty with ketchup.” –Krayt Dragon. So… Are there more sarlaacs than the one we saw in ROTJ? If not, how come this one lived in a cave too? Or was this the, like, back door?

Babayoda has a bad feeling about this.

The Tuskens are shocked and dismayed that Steve has been eaten instead of Bessie the Sacrificial Bantha. They might be open to some fresh ideas.

Tusken action figures? Of course they are to scale and scientifically accurate toys, Cobb Vanth, you specist! Also, needs more chocolate chips. I mean, villagers.

Obligatory protests from the villagers! My grandfather seeded these ponds! or something.

+1 for use of the word “ichor.” *pulls up Merriam-Webster online*

Obligatory use of “only hope.” *checks off list*

-More crossing barren lands music from chapter 7.

Steve’s cousin can hear the train coming--er, dragon sleeping.

The belly is its weak spot? I can only suppose you mean inside the belly, she said archly.

-The music is from chapter 2 when Mando and Kuiil repair the Crest together.

    ~exposition dump~

Why don’t people running away ever run to the side? No, run straight in the monster’s path.

Thar she blows! Dank ferric, the harpoons aren’t working! And the Tusken mortality rate is rising rapidly!

Ew, green substances are never good.

"It’s not dead yet! The dragon is picking us off like Luke Skywalker in Beggar’s Canyon!"

YES JET PACK KINGS. it’s about time you two got off your butts and did something.

“There he is!” Thank you, Mando. What would we do without you.

    Boba’s jetpack is so lame.

Come on, bantha, take one for the team.

    Mando snacks…yum.

What kind of energy wave was that? What was in those bantha bombs—coaxium?

    Ew, slimy Mando.

Ew, slimy dragon guts. I mean, ichor.

Ew, dragon meat is going home with Mando for dinner. Good thing Baby’s a carnivore.

“I hope our paths cross again”...that’s similar to what Mando said to Cara in chapter 4 and there she was again in chapter 7. Maybe CV will be back!

Krayt Dragon pearl is observed and noted.

Why, who is this mysterious dude with both gaffe stick and rifle in mysterious robes?

    boba back.gif

Mr. Boba Fett, that’s who. I’m ready. This was a way cooler reveal than I was expecting!

I wish I could watch every episode over and over and be an expert in canon like you folks, but... it’s not really practical for me.

So I know this is probably a stupid question, but I noticed that they clearly indicated
    the child is male
. Have they ever said that before?

It's not a stupid question since Peli was calling him "it" in this episode...

But yes, they've mostly been referring to him as a male (with the occasional "it" or "thing") since episode 3 when the scientist called him a "he." And I would guess Din's been changing his diapers, so... :D

Love this show. When I saw Anakin’s engine I got a little angry thinking, “So the dude who found Boba’s armor ALSO found Annie’s pod engine, pffft come on fam.” Then I remembered a point brought up on “Chappo Trap House.” When Anakin says he “builds” something, he’s a lying little blast showing off to try to hook up with Natalie Portman. Which I get.

Anakin ASSEMBLES things, 3PO being the best example. He builds a robot that looks like ALL the other robots out there? So no guarantee that Cobb’s engine was in fact Vader’s and I like to think it wasn’t as this was already a reference heavy episode.

To that end, I would be very happy if Boba just kept living his life on Tatooine. I love the references but I’d hate for them to take over. Freaking love that this show creates while also being nostalgic.

I personally enjoyed this episode overall. Only thing that really bothers me is that it was another "problem of the day" storytelling. It works well when used sporadically but it's a little annoying after a having a whole season of the same type of storytelling. I feel like The Mandalorian shouldn't be that type of a show.

I don't think so. I believe it's Boba. Based on what we've seen in Rebels, Rex wouldn't have a need to go to Tatooine. Also, Boba was an unaltered clone, so Rex would of been aged a lot more than than that. Even if Dave Filoni had his way with the old dude from ROTJ to be Rex, that character still looks older than Boba's character.

I love everything about this particular episode. Favorite of the series, easily, to this point and one of my most favorite things since RotJ.

But I have known to overreact... from time to time...

This is a very cool thread about W. Earl Brown's involvement. Kind of crazy that this episode was being produced before the first season had debuted. For Deadwood fans this is pretty awesome.

I also forgot to mention earlier: The Krayt Dragon reminded me so much of one of Dune's sandworms at first that I didn't actually believe it to be a Krayt Dragon until they mentioned it. Well, technically until the Tusken Raiders came out, but they mentioned it shortly after that. I'm sure that the dragon was designed to remind people of Dune, but it was still a nice touch.

I don't like to be overly negative but jeez! The production quality of this episode was kinda embarrassing, Disney has literally limitless funds...give this show the budget it needs! The costumes/sets looked beyond amateur, I've genuinely seen better at comic con & celebration.

The writing in this show frustrated me in season 1. It felt like episodes 1,3, 7 & 8 were written first (and were actually pretty great) and the rest were "problem of the week" episodes dropped in to fill out the season (which were pretty awful). I let it slide, hoping this was because they rushed season 1 to ensure it came out in time for the Disney+ launch...but alas, earwax! Season 2 starts with a 54 minute episode which barely moves the main narrative along at all.

This show is starting to feel like a 2004 Syfy channel original (low budget, poor effects, cheap costumes/makeup, too many problem of the week/no stakes/filler episodes).

I enjoyed Timothy Olyphant as Cobb Vanth, but that was about it. Hopefully next week's episode will have more meat on its bones!

Very glad to see so many people love this show, but I’m definitely on the outside looking in. I really want to love it - the storylines are ok and the visuals are pretty great (for tv), but I just don’t find the show very compelling.

The acting and dialogue are just terrible imo. Way too often it comes across like a high school play - I’m amazed given the pretty well known names in the cast. It reminds me of the lowest acting points of the prequels.

I hoped that maybe it was just a first season problem and maybe it would get better in the second season - but Amy Sedaris and whomever played Cobb Vanth were just brutal. I rolled my eyes every time they spoke.

I will certainly keep watching because it’s Star Wars and I am curious where they take it, but I sure hope it gets better. Right now I think this may be the most overrated of any Star Wars media.

I loved getting to know the Tuscan Raiders some more. It was always this point of view that their vicious, mindless monsters. They are there is no doubt about it, but as Explained put it was Cowboys vs Indians, and in their eyes they saw the Cowboys as invaders.
