Storylines, writing and the intangible understanding of character are what separates the two, IMO. But to your question: F&F have now proven to know how to capture "that" spirit for me ... at least on the small screen. I'll gladly watch anything those two are steering.

Yes! I noticed the dark trooper music really hitting me. So fitting. Nice catch, man!

Anyone else notice the silhouette of what looked to be a YT-1200 freighter leaving the spaceport as Slave 1 came in and landed?

I reckon it’ll be a Haynes Manual or Service Book for Slave 1... been parked up so long it probably needed an oil change at least!

I love that SW has it's own cuss words that the censor can't do blast about. :p What did Dune say after "son of a"?

2020 has been a bit of a dud entertainment wise but Ch 16 hit it out of the park.
The moment the X-Wing arrived I got nervous and when the Child's ears rose I seriously started getting goose bumps.
Not sure who was getting more excited the 9 year old or the old man .
Finally seeing the Luke we've been waiting for since 1983....and seeing R2's reaction implies it knew the Child from before Order66.....fantastic storytelling.
For the finale I was expecting a JediI and leaning towards Cal Kestis (heck maybe even Starkiller), but Luke... Hats off to F&F for pulling that off and keeping it under wraps for so long.

For that 5 minute span I was a kid again. Yeah big baby had tears in his eyes... happens when you grow up w/ SW then end up watching some more w/ your own kids.

    Happy holidays all!

    Cheers, KH

A couple comments on some comments...

mom the criticism to Gideon’s dialogue at the end about how the dark saber had to be won... but nothing ever came of it. I think that was #1 filling the average fan in on the background anyone on this site knows and #2 foreshadowing the plot of season 3

To those who think Luke’s appearance changes or makes up to TLJ. This doesn’t really change anything this was was 5 years post ROTJ so it’s no surprise Luke is portrayed at his best. I think it’s still like 15 years since the Ben Solo incident and that was what caused his turn from our childhood hero to the thing he was in the sequel trilogy. Nothing changes, TLJ stands. And I hated TLJ. That said, it was really to get a glimpse of the post-ROTJ Luke I had always imagined!!!

Wait... I only just realised... one of Pershing's pilots is a clone of the other pilot. How did I miss that first viewing? Or am I crazy and imagining things again?

Edit: Nevermind, I'm crazy. They just have similar faces without hair, and in shadow.

I just watched a second time and noticed that dies irae is unmistakably used when Luke has just entered the ship, along with a vocal chorus. Really cool little details that make sense within the broader SW cinematic universe.

I have to say, I've rarely been as excited by entertainment as the first time viewing, when I realized it had to be Luke. His moves were both new in a sense, and at the same time sooooooo Luke! And some of that initial excitement carried over to the second viewing.

And both times, I cried during the face touching scene. So many parallels in this with other SW (the Vader mask removal scene in ROTJ, the Rogue One hallway thing). Really an amazing episode.

I doubt he'll hang it up. I think he felt burned by the sequel trilogy. But I have a feeling Dave and Jon must have approached him and talked him into at least voicing Luke for this. Wouldn't take long and would perhaps unruffled his feathers a bit. I'd love to see more Luke.

I have to say I'm with you! I've watched it 4 times and now I'm watching Return of the Jedi and perhaps I'll watch it again immediately afterward. That hallway scene is just perfect. I told the wife it had to be Luke who shows up to save the day. It just had to. Only Luke makes sense. He is the only "Jedi" left. No one else, including Ahsoka and Ezra, were knighted. However, when that X0wing flew in I was in shock. "They freakin did it!!!" Man. I was 13 again.

Broke my heart to see Grogu walk away from Din towards R2 and then request to be taken by Luke...

Grogu clinging on to Din's boot...

Din captured on his face what i was feeling.

Just for a second i thought Din wanted Grogu to refuse to go...the pain...

Just perfect. Loved every moment of it.

Din is going to stay a changed man for the better or will he become angrier and more aggressive without Grogu? I'm assuming he's going to go back to bounty hunting or focus on mandalore and mandalorian culture and that might shade him or something.

As a military guy and huge R1 fan, the planning for their op onto Gideon's cruiser was well-done and the dialog believable....loved this part of the episode.

I feel similar to a lot here. Lot of cool moments, Grogu and Din at the end were the absolute emotional highlight.

I felt similar to Luke’s appearance as I did with Vader in R1. Felt a bit deus ex machina, but at least there was some form of suggestion with Grogu reaching for a Jedi. A satisfying popcorn sequence, though his dialogue left me wanting. I get they didn’t want to do too many lines, but all it did was make me want to see actual Master Luke, the combat skills we saw, with a wisdom that’s a blend of or transition from RotJ to TLJ/TRoS. I want to know more of his views, his philosophies, like the snippets we see in Rise of Kylo Ren (note, I loved Luke’s arc in TLJ, even the flashback).

I’m still curious about Din and Bo-Katan’s possible conflict now, less curious about Boba. But Luke..and then also hopefully seeing Grogu return before we hit Ben’s fall in 18ish years.

Boba on the throne reminded me of Conan on the throne. Now that I look at both pictures, I think it's intentional. Those two heads at either side of the thrown...

Will this be the last time we see Pedro without the helmet for a while or is he going to be embracing it more after all even without Grogu?

Completely agree. It's why I had to go back and rewatch the scene where Luke arrives. :)

yep, that he was... but I guess we’ve happily accepted Boba survived the guts of the Sarlacc, so expected to buy it that Bib dodged the explosion too.

Why do people keep mentioning Filoni in relation to this chapter? It's not one of his.

The music for Luke's arrival reminded me of the music for Luke's arrival at Crait.

It's not post-ROTJ Luke. It's just ROTJ luke. He's got the exact same all black outfit on as 5 years previously when they symbolised his temptation by darkness during that movie.

But Luke's not really a character in this. He's the embodiment and apparition of myth/legend that he referred to in TLJ and which ultimately appears to confront Kylo at the end of that movie. Appearing exactly like he did in ROTJ is shorthand for that, in the eyes of the fans.

The Luke who has self doubt, struggles with belief sometimes, is provoked by threats to his friend's safety (but eventually overcomes) are all the things which are necessary to make Luke a character. They're certainly necessary to make him relatable and sympathetic.

I think it's no accident that the child coos and paws the screen while watching in awe at Luke's progress. This is every star wars fan of a certain age (40-50+ year old children) fetishizing their star wars figure battles and scenarios.

I love the mandalorian for doing this. But I'm also very glad that the sequel trilogy was not a similar exercise in nostalgia. That would have been disastrous.

If Grogu is permanently with Luke and not ever to be seen again, then my reason for watching The Mandalorian is gone. Unless, they somehow find that Grogu insists Mando be brought to train with him.

My understanding is an actor was chosen for similar looks to Mark Hamel, but Mark speaks the lines
It would have had to be an CGI face created for Mark Hamel. Age has not been kind to him.

Possible, it an tribute/honor thing for Jedi character being cast listed as Mark Hammel

I do love Grogu, but at the same time I think his absence will create interesting new dynamics for Din going into Season 3. Although I will be very surprised if we don't see Grogu again at some point in the show.
