We are a little over two months away from the debut of Star Wars' first live-action streaming series The Mandalorian, and Entertainment Weekly has released another look at the series. The exclusive photo has our anti-hero facing off against two trandoshans, the same species as bounty hunter Bossk, who Star Wars fans remember from The Empire Strikes Back.

The brief piece from Entertainment Weekly shows this new photo below, while also saying the series:

We already know the series will include an IG droid that isn't IG-88, but instead IG-11, voiced by Taika Waititi. So why not also add trandoshans that are not Bossk! We see a pattern developing here: it's not Boba Fett, it's the Mandalorian, it's not IG-88, it's IG-11, it's not Bossk it's other trandoshans. This is a smart way to reel fans into a brand new story with new characters while maintaining some sense of visual familiarity and connectivity.

The Mandalorian debuts in just 70 days on November 12 on the Disney+ streaming service.

It would definitely be weird if he did fight multiple trandoshans named Bossk :p

What if Bossk was a title this whole time and just mistakenly used as his name due to poor translation skills because the empire looked down on non-humans

My favourite phrase to use when applied to this series is fast becoming "...in everything but name."

First we get The Mandalorian himself, who on the face of it appears to be Boba Fett in everything but name. Then we get IG-11, who is basically IG-88 in everything but name. Now we get lots of Bossks who are all a Bossk in everything but name. Don't be surprised if 12-LOM is coming soon, to be shortly followed by Zackass and Dungar.

...and does nobody remember the picture of the droid that looked like R5-D4, but probably isn't R5-D4, which was posted from the set of The Mandalorian as an early sneak peak of nothing in particular?

I like to use the phrase "my favorite show of all-time, at least until the Cassian Andor series is released," but it's kinda long. Maybe I could just use MFSOATALUTCASIR.

The IG & Bossk don’t really bother me as IG is a type of Droid so they are all going to look similar ( Plus we may get a explanation in the show) & in the old cannon Trandoshans (Not sure about the new Cannon though several did show up briefly in Last Shot) we’re renowned Hunters & Trackers so it kind of makes sense that there would be in that line of work.
Now if we get a 4-Lom & Zackass then yes that maybe going a bit to far.

None of it actually bothers me either. It's all said with tongue in cheek affection really!

I'm loving it and looking forward to it! :)

It's like what we know already, only different.

IG kind of irks me just a little bit because I kinda wish they just went with the Ultron-style Iggy from the old canon- they even could've made it a different unit of IG-88, which could've been cool.

But regardless, it's one of my favorite droid models of all time, so I won't complain. The brief few shots we got in the trailer were glorious.

Trandoshans make a ton of sense, though. They're all basically slavers, so of course they'd be around scum like the likes the Mandalorian will see.

Wouldn't be surprised to see some Weequay, rodians, sullustans, and Duros, too, among others.

And I don't doubt we'll see some fight scene with a creature we know- perhaps a rancor or Nexu. Maybe even a Krayt dragon!

Frankly... it's kinda nice to see some of the old familiar stuff coming back to the new material. I love the new movies so far, but outside of Solo it's seemed like new races/creatures have been getting a lot more screentime over older creations.

For me it brings back childhood memories of playing with Star Wars action figures.

Sure, sometimes I literally played with them as the characters as they were in the movies. But sometimes they became my own characters... whilst still essentially remaining the same!

I mean who didn't have a second IG-88 droid and call him IG-89 or something?

    This feels like that.

Jon Favreau is truly playing with the toys in his toy box.

I'm pretty sure I did exactly that with Bossk, in fact. I don't think I even knew his name for a lot of my childhood, he was just a "dinosaur guy". And all the cooler for it.

Fans scream for a Boba Fett Movie... Disney gives us a movie about Boba Fett, post ROTJ...but without Boba Fett.

    Allegedly.

Sure, but Boba Fett died getting digested over a 1000 years in the belly of the Sarlacc. By telling stories about a bounty hunter who looks like Boba Fett but without being Boba Fett (assuming it's not Boba Fett!), then they don't have to deal with explaining his escape. Especially when we already have one other character's survival after apparent death in the canon.

I've said this elsewhere, but I think the reason for setting up similar, but different, characters means the writers can be free of the constraints of any existing Fett canon. Explaining Fett's escape from the Sarlacc wouldn't be needed and it also means they don't have to consider having him be portrayed by Temuera Morrison. This Mandalorian armoured bounty hunter doesn't have to have the Jango clone heritage.

It also means it can be set in its own little world and eke out its own independent storylines, with no direct causal connections with the saga's past, present or future. Whilst still being set in the wider Star Wars universe of course, with characters that at least look familiar and do the kind of things we imagined those characters would do.

I personally suspect this series did began life as the Boba Fett movie, and would probably have been set pre-ANH. But it morphed into a series, moved to being post-ROTJ and changed to a new character for the reasons I said above.

They could explain how he survived in the first 8 minutes of the first episode. To me it is just lazy.

Jango and Boba were not Mandalorians, but wore Mandalorian style armor. Perhaps Favreau (and Filoni) have an interesting backstory for the character that wouldn't fit with an established character like Boba. Favreau and Filoni worked together on The Clone Wars when Favreau voiced Pre Vizla, leader of a Mandalorian terrorist group called Death Watch. Maybe they just have a love for Mandalorians and also wanted to use droids and species from the Originals that have been seldom used since then. IG-11 could just be in the episode directed by Taika Waititi, since he voices the character.

The official description of the show on the Disney+ website actually calls him a "lone gunfighter" and not a bounty hunter. He's obviously engaged in bounty hunting in the extended scene from Celebration, but that could end up not being the main focus of the show. He could get drawn into some other conflict.

The show looks gorgeous and has an excellent crew of producers, writers and directors, not to mention an outstanding cast. Werner Herzog!!!!! Even if it is some sort of Fett-reboot, I'd still be excited to see it, but I bet there ends up being a lot more to the show than that.

A Boba Fett-centered series would incur ridiculous 'fan head canon' and speculation about Boba Fett wanted revenge on Luke, Han, Leia, Chewbacca. They'd have to eventually meet or something or else we'll have 100 threads about why isn't Lucasfilm de-aging Harrison Ford and using him in the Boba Fett series.

In short not having this as a Boba Fett show simply gives them more creative freedom.

Exactly. They can avoid all the complications and the baggage that having it be Boba Fett would bring. With a new guy in the armour they can have a clean start.
