Hey guys! Let's celebrate Max von Sydow's body of work in here. Personally when I read he would be in TFA, I was ecstatic. The man has got chops and boy oh boy can he play a great villain. My excitement has waned a tad with rumors that he may be a drunkard jedi who's just spying on the new kids for someone else. In my eyes, that would be an immense waste of talent. You don't get Max von Sydow to be in a pulpy space adventure that aims to recapture the magic of the OT only to have him play second or third fiddle. He was Ming the Merciless, insane tyrant of Mongo, thorn in Flash Gordon's side, and supreme fashion icon for crying out loud! Seriously, go watch Flash Gordon. The 1980 one. Cool soundtrack, and set designs, but watch it for Max as Ming.

Or check him out in the little seen Intacto...

As pure scum and villainy, it's hard to beat what MvS can bring to a role. Granted he's old, and we don't necessarily want another Dooku sith-uation with an old guy magically being spry, but I hope they at least let the villainous nature of some of MvS's greatest characters come through.

But I digress, let's celebrate his body of work here. What are your favorite MvS films/roles?

    Mine include:

    Flash Gordon
    Minority Report
    Intacto

(FYI: yours faves don't need to include only villainous roles.... I just happen to be partial to those... because I have taste. Jk)

Flash Gordon was released in 1980, by the way. I like him in The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Exorcist, Conan The Barbarian, and Dune.

This. That's the spirit, markdeez! Thanks for contributing. Need to rewatch lots of these. Had no idea he was in Extremely Loud (read the book, haven't seen the film)

Same, but if they decide to use him sparingly, I hope they make him evil as can be. MvS' eyebrows are pure evil... the human equivalent of Evil Burt.

Slightly off-topic: Is that goiter made with practical effects or CG?

I saw a great MVS film on Sat(11/15/2014). It was a older WWII film called; Brass Target(1978).
It starts out as a cheap, poorly made European drama but the tension & suspense builds. The last 3rd keeps your interest. Max plays a spy/assassin hired to kill General George Patton(George Kennedy).
Historians & a few scholars now say Patton may have been a serious target of assassination along with General Dwight D "Ike" Eisenhower(the Supreme Commander).
MSV is a bad guy but he's a great actor & keeps you guessing until the dramatic climax.
