The Millenium Falcon's introduction to the plot is HORRENDOUS

None of this was part of the original trilogy other than Han himself boasting about his ship in one scene, everything else that the Falcon did on screen was because of Han's piloting. If anything the Falcon fails the main characters and gets Han caught by having a hyperdrive that never works. And even if it was much better under the hood, no amount of engine upgrades is going to change the fact that at a glance the Falcon is an outdated piece of junk that holds no significance. In the context of the movies, there is no reason why most people would even recognize the Falcon let alone care about it. To the audience the Falcon is important, to the rest of the Star Wars galaxy they're too busy salvaging Star Destroyers that are actually worth something.

Han shoulda been introduced on Jakku with Chewie. As they are in the process of stealing back the falcon, FO attacks and Rey Finn Bb Han & Chewie collide. Han flies them to safety, we skip the freighter altogether and this allows for scenes to flesh out.

No, it's an EU conjecture that sounds like like a retcon because nobody cared to earnestly research the issue. The Falcon has one hyperdrive (ANH novelization) and that's it. The decisive point in ESB was to make the jump to hyperspace so they could shake Vader's fleet, but the hyperdrive motivator was damaged. That never told us anything about the Falcon's other FTL capabilities that are part of the hyperdrive (think of a lower gear shift). Luke in ESB did not make a visible jump into hyperspace, neither did the "refugee ship" in AotC which was apparently flying FTL but not within hyperspace (!). It would seem that there is an FTL alternative to the jump into hyperspace that will take longer but perhaps saves more fuel.

Nevertheless the interstellar distances crossed are impressive: Han told his passengers that they'd arrive at Alderaan at 1400 hours, apparently the same day. And in ESB Piett told Vader that the Falcon by then was probably "on the other side of the galaxy".

They needed a scene where Rey could fly it, because with Han being killed off, someone needed to inherit it... they weren't just going to stick Rey in the pilot seat at the end of the movie without her having shown that she could handle it.

Realistically, they should have probably just let the Falcon end with Han. Crashing on Starkiller in such a way that it would not be able to leave would have been the ultimate foreshadowing of Han's death.

Rey: "Quickly! Lets run from this invasion of stormtroopers by escaping aboard this convieniently parked freighter, which hasn't flown for years but will hopefully start up and fly at the first attempt despite its reputation as an unreliable piece of junk."

And it also conveniently blew up the second Death Star and absolutely no rebels or stormtroopers were told what it looked like. LOL at the people trying to defend this (epic fail)

Of course I HIGHLY enjoy the movie, the action is fun, the production is brilliant.. but I can 100% see where the criticism is coming from. Not a lot of thought was put into certain aspects of the plot and it CANNOT be denied that many elements are ripped shot-by-shot from A New Hope. I don't understand why J.J. felt the need to give the finger to some of his own generation. Moments like the lightsaber reveal, the Falcon reveal... they belong in the Rebels cartoon. Not an episodic movie.

Again, I enjoy the movie.. but hopefully Rian Johnson will write it far more intelligently and make it feel closer to the originals plot-wise.

So the transponder switches on the second they power up the Falcon? This would make the freighter scene make plenty of sense to me and I thank you for pointing this out! However my point on the Falcon and lightsaber reveals remain

I thought it was borderline believable and felt a bit forced. In the end i was ok with it as it is a minor detail. But like more stuff in TFA..just a little bit more info would have helped a lot. It is not so much a issue about adding a lot of info but more of delivering it in such a way that it raises less questions.

What you're saying is certainly logical but it happens this way because it's a two hour movie. There isn't enough time to establish a realistic wait time for Han and Chewie to arrive. It's the same reason Luke's training on Dagobah with Yoda lasts no more than 2-3 days of movie time rather than the weeks (or even months) that are somewhat implied.

I'm not crazy about the convenience of the Falcon sitting on Jakku under Unkar Plutt's ownership--- who just so happens to have longstanding history with Rey. But, when the First Order begins tracking Rey, Finn and BB-8, the Falcon is only recognized a Corellian Y-T freighter. It isn't relevant at all until Han and Chewie show up that this particular ship is the Millennium Falcon.

There may be a yet undisclosed reason the Falcon was in such close proximity to Rey, but until that's revealed this is the biggest coincidence I don't particularly like (although it is a very cool moment).

The Falcon's introduction was amazing! It wasn't hailed as some thing from god, it's just a piece of junk with a history.

The Falcon reveal got that biggest cheer from the crowd in my midnight screening.

And we Brits do not emote during movies. Unless it is comedy. (We know good comedy)

Kylo stole the MF and gave it to Unkar in exchange for watching over his little sis. Then he took off on that weak transport.

I'm also a Brit, I saw it with a cinema with about 400 other people and they were pretty much like "meh." at that part. The genuine comedy moments all got big laughs though.

Why would the homeless junkers on a backwater planet know what the Falcon looked like? I don't think Rey had a lot of textbooks of Galactic History or, like, Google.

Even assuming people like Rey knew it was a YT freighter, why would you assume that the junked one on your planet is the Falcon? If I saw a white Bronco, I wouldn't assume it was OJ's.

The Millenium Falcon should be as famous as Elvis in the Star Wars universe.

A story. At my work, one of my former managers sometimes wears an Elvis tie. It's terrible taste, I know. But on his last day before transferring to another place, he was wearing that tie. A co-worker of mine walked up, saw the tie, and asked if the guy on the tie was Harry Potter.

That's nearly as inexcusable as an uneducated urchin not knowing what the Millennium Falcon looks like!

My ex-manager told me after that event, and I quote, "I take back everything good I ever said about [name]. He's a complete moron."
