In SOLO we get a chance to see the Empire in action in the Mimban Campaign, 10 BBY. At this point the Empire was in existence for approx 9 galactic years.....and slogging through the planet Mimban.

The 224th Imperial Armored Division vs the Mimbanese Army.....these scenes were really reminiscent to me of WWI......a terrible terrible conflict. As I explained WWI to my boys, imagine Civil War tactics with machine guns.

Anyway, this scene of the Somme from "War Horse" really shows this type of warfare....

Even the scenes where Han is following Beckett, Val, and Rio through the trenches after the night time fighting really paint the World War 1 feel to the whole battle. The first time I watched it I saw sort of a cross between the trench fighting we saw in World War 1 and some elements to the Normandy beach landing that is portrayed in numerous World War 2 movies (i.e. the Imperial Walker being dropped off, the explosions and bodies flying through the air). I personally like some of the grittier fighting when it is shown in Star Wars and wish they had shown a little more in Solo. Maybe we'll get more in a deleted scene.

I was a fan of the mud trooper uniforms. Since so much of what we see from the empire during this time period is the stormtrooper corps, it was a nice change of pace to see something that the common soldier would wear. Plus, as you mentioned, it is a nice compliment to the overall World War 1 feel that this part of the movie has.

    YES!
I loved the WWI feel of this battle.

Also, from what I remember, Stormtroopers are supposed to be the "Best of the Best", so it was good getting to see some more standard, boots on the ground army troopers for once since (at least in Legends) they were supposed to make up the bulk of the Imperial army.

The Stormtroopers are definitely the elite ground infantry, so even though that wasn't made 100% clear in this movie, I think it did help show the more casual fans that there are more than just Stormtroopers in the Empire. I do wish we had seen some more of the Imperial Navy in this movie, particularly the pilots, but it sounds like we may get a little bit of that in the deleted scenes for Solo.

"You'll never sleep as deeply as in the lap of a wookiee" (sic)

WHO can deny this is one of the greatest SW lines ever conceived?

    It is.

    It just is.

I saw Solo a third time after reading about the lighting/color issue. It really is dark at first, and cloudy, so I can see where the criticism comes from. But still....loved this movie.

I think we are going to find all kinds of fun troopers once the movie comes out for home release. I know I'm going to try to break down this part of the movie as much as I can to see what I can find.

One thing i don't like is that the Imperial Army Troopers are "replaced" by ANH.

OH COME ON! They look so cool screams my inner 10 year old!

I wouldn't say replaced so much as the Death Star is, in essence, a massive spaceship which would fall under the Imperial Navy. Hence the large number of Imperial Navy Troopers and Gunners. Since the Death Star is also the most elite weapon the Empire has, it would make sense that you have a large number of Stormtroopers aboard to defend it. With regard to the Sandtroopers on Tatooine, those troopers were sent on a search and extraction mission so once again it makes sense to have the elite troopers handle this situation. So like I said, the imperial army wasn't necessarily replaced but rather the stormtrooper corps was more or less the focus.
